"The splashing of urine was among the cases described as inadvertent. It was said to have occurred when a guard urinated near an air vent and the wind blew his urine through the vent into a detainee's cell. The detainee was given a fresh uniform and a new Koran, and the guard was reprimanded and assigned to guard duty that kept him from contact with detainees for the remainder of his time at Guantánamo, according to the military inquiry."

That's the stupidest thing i've heard yet.

This defies all laws of logic... does anybody buy this piece of bullshit? MAN. At least come up with something believable.

I don't know what to be more disgusted at here: The desecration of a holy book, or the fact that they try and pass this steaming pile of shit off.

How stupid do they think we are? Has the Bush Adminstration lost all respect for us? At least in the Clinton Years we had believable lies.

The very fact that it is so unbeleivable makes me think it is true. I mean think about it. The Bush administration wouldn't put out something like this unless it was true. Or maybe that's just what they want us to think. "Put out an unbelivable story, they'll have to beleive it mwahahah."

It might not be true. I think the bigger point here is WHO CARES!!!
Ever heard of free speach, burn the flag, have and art exhibit called (it makes me ill to mention this)-Piss Christ, Yeah I said it makes me ill, but I will not create a riot and murder several people because of it. Theyre the murderers, dont worry about their books, worry about their victims!!!!

Yes, yes - but those are "the bad guys". What people are getting upset about is that "the good guys" apparantly are not acting like they should.

Every now and then i need help, like many of us probably do. Good thing i have that extra arm, or i'd have to take one off the keyboard. This applies in many areas of life, come to think of it .... whoops, maybe i've said too much.

If you play into the terrorist hands by allowing abuses like this you only ensure they will gain support and kill more innocent people.

I hardly call the human rights abuses at Gitmo an expression of free speech, either.

BTW the Afghani officials said the riots were going to happen anyway regardless of the Koran article. That's an even more disturbing notion since it indicates the situation in the country we were supposed to invade is degrading and that justified war may be all for naught.

That must be one weirdly placed air vent. :)

(A) Air vents are normally placed in the roof or high.
(B) The toilet must have been above the cell as a splashable volume of liquid will have trouble going upwards (unless airflow is very fast and continuous).

This is getting more air time than mass graves in Iraq full of executed men, women and children. Civilians that were shot and dumped in a pit and bulldozed over.

I dont care about the bullshit koran story-if its true, a lie or whatever. I just dont care at all. Korans in toilets....piss spalshing through air vents...Korans being accidentally knocked on the floor.... Is this really worth caring about?

If it were a christian or a jew being held in a cell in afghanistan, and they were still alive, for some reason, do you think they would have a bible? Do you think they would have appropriate meals or shelter?

Stop kidding yourselves. Dont give them anything to make a story about.

@ Carnivorous lickers

You are quite right to point out that there are many things worse than this going on in the world - but why should that mean this should be condoned ?
To draw a parallel: genocide is obviously worse than murder. That doesn't mean that all murderers should go free.

I am a muslim and I believe all the holy books should be treated with proper respect, but I'm not going to make a big deal out of one incident. I'm sure that was not the first holy book, be it Qu'ran or Bible that has been disrespected. All praises due to Allah, we have other problems to worry about.

Maybe he was drunk. I've peed on and into all kinds of weird stuff when I was really drunk. Once I peed in the space between the outer and inner glass doors of a Sports Authority store.

Peeing on a Koran and killing people aren't in the same league. Why do the attrocities in Darfur get barely a mention in the press, and some guy peeing on a book gets daily worldwide coverage?

But on the whole being drunk on duty is ment to be a punishable offence and if the guy was off duty, what was he doing that near to a prisoner?

Actually, there is about equal coverage of Korans and Darfour in the media here... But sadly Darfour doesn't really change, and therefor does not make too interesting news:

Welcome to the [insert time here] news.
No news in Darfour, just that lots of people died today, just like yesterday and every other day of the past few weeks.

The Koran issue on the other hand changes and evolves.

I do agree that the amount of attention something as relatively insignificant as "the war on terror" or the Koran flushing is out of proportion compared to serious issues like Darfour or AIDS. But being "less important" does not mean "not important at all".

Maybe he was drunk on duty and didn't get caught. If you don't get caught you've done nothing wrong, right? Maybe he was off duty and just killing time with some of the inmates. Maybe he's a fuck up who doesn't belong in the military. Who knows what's really going on in this situation?

Have you no patriotism or decency, no national pride?

Because the united states used to be considered a beacon of human rights, It isnt any more, and it is important that people arent tricked into thinking that it is.

Alright, what happened was the guy was peeing outside near an air vent that led to the accusers cell. We can assume that said accuser knew he was peeing. Said accuser than says that the urine came in through the air vent and hit his koran. Now, it's possible the guard was aiming, it's possible that it blew into the air vent on accident, but in all reality it's probable that the guy made it up. Does anyone know if they tested the koran in question for any urine?

Does it matter ? We know that the facility has flushable toilets, so why was the guy peeing in an airvent ?

I'm sorry put people going into riots over someone flushing a book (of which there are plenty of copies your local Waterstones) down the loo is childish and self-pitying behaviour. I'm sorry but does really give a shit? If I were Christian, I frankly wouldn't care if the Saudis were burning Bibles. I'm sorry if the muslim fundamentalists think we should care when they whinge about our practices over her when in their joint they violate just about every human right imaginable and I'm sorry if they haven't been introduced to that little thing called "free speech".

He was patrolling around the building and stopped to take a leak. Easier and less time consuming than going to the nearest toilet.

Pardon my ignorance.. but is this a subterranean facility then, or do they imprison people in the cellars ?

I sense a barb, I just haven't yet figured out which way it's aimed.
