Roughly spherical. It'll have an average temperature of of about 59 degrees. Seemingly unique levels of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, iron, silicon, calcium, and nitrogen along with a favorable air pressure will allow for a planet on which life will thrive. Life will be found both on the planet's surface and in liquid (!) bodies of water. By 2025 roughly 4.5 billion years will have passed since the planet's formation, giving ample time for the life that the planet can sustain to develop. Also in this period of time, many volcanic explosions will have taken place. These will have helped heat the planet to an optimal temperature and will have forced rare elements to the surface of the planet so that importiant chemical reactions could take place. The gases from these explosions will also have created an atmosphere equipped to protect the life forms from the dangers of space.

I dunno, but if I don't get a flying car I'm gonna be fuckin' pissed...

I disagree. I prefer cars on the ground. Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways, but I think our cars have much more character then those new fangled contraptions ever will. So now I'll turn on Red Barchetta in protest.

Well here is what i think/hope it will be like:

The U.S. will be even more rich, fiscally conservative and powerful and will continue to keep the peace around the world along with its new ally, India.

India will be more influential in the world than Europe.

China will be fractured in a civil war after that big dam (forgot the name but it will be the biggest in the world) bursts, killing millions and sparking riots. Taiwan will be invaded but a combined sea based U.S. and land based Indian assault will utterly destroy the Chinese army. Along with this stuff and China losing its ability to manipulate its currency the last major Communist regime in the world will collapse.

The US and India will have been kicked out of the UN for refusing to agree with elitist Europeans, consequently the UN is disbanded from lack of funds.

Europe will be divided into desperate pathetic Caucasians begging the government for things it can no longer provide because their economies collapsed ten years ago and Islamic Fundamentalists who bully the politicians into doing their bidding

Fidel Castro will die. Cubans will be celebrating in the streets and the U.S. will graciously except them as a protectorate.

Iraq will be a stable country with an economy larger than most of the now defunct European countries.

The Shahs of Iran will be overthrown in a democratic takeover sponsored by the U.S.

Hydrogen power will replace gasoline and the U.S. will no longer have to pretend to be an ally of Saudi Arabia. The house of Saud will be overthrown like in Iran.

Because of the fact that it hasn't happened yet, the Theory of Global Warming will be declared officially wrong by the scientific community

I personally will be a history professor at the University of Texas. :D

maybe i will post more later, oh and please don't take this stuff seriously, just having a little fun

Oh. Um... Fidel Castro won't die. :)

Also, the Europeans will kick India and the US out of the UN only to realize that the actual building is still in the US. Several European helecopters will crash into the State of Liberty in a botched attempt to liberate the UN building. Americans will laugh and the statue will have a dent.

Thus the US will have to "sponser" it. Through Iraq show them what a real democracy is and find ways to covertly show them the best method of self-goverment.

Unfortunately, that'll probably happen. Our country has a track record for giving Al Jazeera a hard time (at best) and blowing up their offices (at worst), and most likely on purpose. I'm against US censorship of Arabic news stations.

Wow. For a thread that looks in to the future, it's pretty ironic that mostly conservatives have replied. :p

Here's what I think (not what I'd like, necessarily):

- Global warming (which is quite obviously happening as we speak. Ask any scientist. The question is, what's causing it?) will have been linked to human causes, and humans will be racing to counteract it.

- More poverty throughout the world as more people try to live on shrinking resources.

- The US will likely have had one or two democratic presidents as well as one or two republican presidents. Unfortunately, none will be able to completely stabilize Iraq. Though the casualties of the Iraq War will be FAR less than those of Vietnam, some pointed similarities will exist between the war. Not to say they're even remotely the same, but there will have been similarities. Eventually, the US will leave what they call a 'stable' Iraq.

- The UN will continue to function as it has. Some corruption, the US will still be part of it (and may even be part of the corruption), etc.

- China will be the scary nation. The former USSR will have parallels with China, though once again have pointed differences. China will have the strongest economy in the world, followed by the US.

- Other relatively small issues (think Kosovo) will have come and gone. The Sudan will have had humanitarian aid and threats such that the genocide will slow.

- Nuclear proliferation will still likely be the big issue. The US will make no attempts to get rid of the majority of its nuclear arsenal, whilst at the same time ordering other smaller nations to do just that.

I think that's about all I can think of right now. :D

Here is a few more:

Most Hollywood studios will have gone bankrupt because of their stuborn continuation of making movies that appeal only to the fast shrinking American left.

Episodes VII, VIII, IX of Star Wars will be big hits and will be produced at the new center of movie magic somewhere in the mid-west. (George always was a Hollywood outsider after all.)

The House of Windsor will be utterly wiped out by islamic assasins, thus the commonwealth will fall apart.

Both the Northern and Southern borders of the U.S. will be secured by the military. Anyone caught trying to cross illegaly will be shot. (illegal aliens have killed more Americans in the last twenty years than the number of people who died on 9/11 after all.)

Canada will beg to join the U.S. after their socialist policies destroy them, but we will refuse. Most Canadians will commit suicide by trying to flee to the U.S.

A sea/land based attack against the largest standing army in the world? At a time when China will be hitting its industrial upswing? Maybe if the gov't mandates forced conscription...

Assuming the EU doesn't completely pull out of the US in the next ten years anyway, and assuming that the Euro doesn't completely destroy the Dollar. Also assuming that a fringe group like the fundies could bully every EU country into submission...

The Shahs of Iran will be overthrown in a democratic takeover sponsored by the U.S.

Hydrogen power will replace gasoline and the U.S. will no longer have to pretend to be an ally of Saudi Arabia. The house of Saud will be overthrown like in Iran.

Iran will no longer be economically viable, thanks to the levels to which the oil fields will have been depleted by then. In fact, with most of the oil gone from the Middle East, things will become very scary for a country built on cheap oil and long commutes.

Hydrogen power is unfeasible. Not only do hydrogen fuel cells cost something close to $1,000,000, they need 20 grams of platinum to run, and are only good for about 12,000 miles. Even if mass-production led to the need for only 10 grams, there are only 7.7 billion grams in the world, and about 700 million cars on the road. If every oil-based engine was switched over to hydrogen, we'd have enough platinum to last about one year. Even if we kept it all to ourselves, we'd only have enough to last 2-3 years, since the US has about 200 million cars running around.

Me personally? I think the US will have pulled out of every international agreement, China will mobilize its huge armies to take and guard drinkable water - which we're already running out of - and oil, which will also soon be in high demand. AIDS and constant warfare will have the people of Africa on the brink of extinction. And the US will be a tattered ruin of what it once was, because (A) the increasing scarcity of oil will cause the end of the trucking, shipping, and aeronautics industries, and (B) without being able to transport cheap goods from China, compounded with our huge national debt, the economy will collapse.

The nation should be open to anyone who wants to come here legally and is willing to assimilate into our culture and learn English so that they can become productive members of society. My ancestors eighther came here legaly or were already here long before europeans (I have some siox heritage on both sides). And they all learned English.

Anyway, more:

Social Security in the U.S. will be gone because of the ridiculous tactics of "the party of no" (democrats). The outrage against the party will result in a 75% majority for Republicans.

Jeb Bush will be president of the U.S. from 2008- 2016, followed by Condi Rice from 2016-2024, followed by another republican

The filibuster will be abolished in the U.S. sometime during Jeb's administration.

Also during Jeb's tenure a flat income tax of 12% will be implemented. The goverment will sustain itself with tarrifs and a national sales tax of 1%. Domestic industries will soar because of the tarrifs and Detroit will recover.

In the U.S. Welfare recipiants will be required to prove that they have a full-time job unless parental responsabilties prevent it.

In the U.S. all men between the ages of 18-24 will be required to serve in the military for at least a year.

I think that by the year 2025 the world will have either ended, or restarted. I think this because of the Mayan calendar. Any fan of Central American history could tell you that the Mayans were extremely exact when it came to their calendar predictions. Their calendar, unlike most ancient civilizations, has never had an error. They were able to predict changes like the winter solstice precisely years in advance, along with their own destruction by Cortez. The Mayan calendar stops on Dec 21 2012. This leads me to believe that something very interesting will happen, possibly the end of the human race. After all, why continue counting if no one is around to record it later? Why would they just stop there if people were going to live. I predict either WW3 coming as a large nuclear war that will kill most in explosions and suffocate the rest in nuclear fallout, causing an ice age…
That or the shifting of the tectonic plates will cause mass volcanic eruptions (super volcanoes) that would cover the world in ash and yet again a probable ice age…

It reminds me of “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

But if the world is somehow undestroyed, we will still probably be in WW3 with mass poverty and small amounts of natural resources left at our disposal… Sad, but probably true…

Al Jazeera offices in Kabul destroyed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1653887.stm)

Mr Jasim would not speculate as to whether the offices were deliberately targeted, but said the location of the bureau was widely known by everyone, including the Americans.
"This office has been known by everybody, the American airplanes know the location of the office, they know we are broadcasting from there," he said.

I can't say for certain that we did it on purpose, but that's quite a coincidence.

Al Jazeera offices in Baghdad hit (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2927527.stm)

Al-Jazeera's Baghdad office is near the Iraqi Information Ministry but its correspondents are thought to conduct their live reports from a location near the Palestine Hotel, where many journalists are staying.
"We were caught by surprise," Abdullah said. "One missile hit the pavement in front of us, ripping out windows and doors and then one hit the generator."

It would seem as though it was no secret that the Al Jazeera offices were there. They got hit again? I admit that these things can happen in a war, but to the same news agency in two successive wars? A missle just happened to hit their generator. Blowing up the entire office must have been a bit too heavy handed.

On the other hand, it could have been an accident, but if you suspect that then you're probably wrong.

You do know where I stand. I don't support hassling any of the relatively free, reliable sources of news in the Middle East. It's bad karma. If we can have 24 hour news networks with that American bias, I don't see why they can't have an Arab bias. Every once in a while those biases make sure that the real story comes to light. Let use an example easier for us to identify with. I didn't support China's media crackdown during the protests at Tiananmen Square. Just the same, I don't like a US media crackdown in the Middle East.

Yes everything you say about America will happen.

The rest of the world meanwhile will be economically stable, as China's standard of living has risen and the population no longer works in sweatshops.
Thus downward pressure on wages worldwide disappears and a golden age begins.

French scientists at CERN finally develop the technology for nuclear fusion plants, which the French eagerly build, exporting energy all over the world and making a killing. Americans refuse to take part, calling the technology "french-looking" and unveiling the new Hummer H(12!), with a supercharged 40ltr V18 and a kerb weight of just under seven tons.

The new energy sources now enable the production of non-oil powered (and possibly flying) cars, causing the Arab Regimes installed during the oil years (new "democratic" Iraq, Saudi-Arabia etc) to break and leading to Islamic Republics being founded by the will of the people.
While Mexicans and Canadians are now sick of being shot by its neighbours, they join the EU and profit greatly.

Meanwhile, the American populace lives in peace, free from immigrants in the belief that they still are the greatest nation on earth. News from the outside are no longer shown, as they may contain terrorist propaganda. All borders are sealed, and no trade occurs any longer (as no firm wants to pay for tariffs).

In 2025, the president announces to the rest of the world that the United States have now, after expelling weapons inspectors, developed laser guns, which is concerning the international community.
"Our dear Leader", Jeb II. (son of Jeb I. and Queen Condi I.) announces that the laser guns have been developed to defend the US against foreign invaders and terrorists.

Don't be so sure, the world's economy depends on the U.S. consumer. Your "firms" will be more than happy to pay the tarrif to earn any profit at all, and the shrinking elitist left will need their supply of French garbage.

More:

In the midst of a liberal love-fest frenzy the EU will declare nuclear technology and fossil fuels illegal as they shout "Glory to the Kyoto Treaty!" The U.S. and its new allies (India, Taiwan, Iraq, Iran and Suadi Arabia for those of you not keeping score) will simply shake their heads and sigh.

Shortly after the Downfall of Maoism War, Putin's sucsesor will procalim himself Czar of Russia and begin invading Europe. Without any nuclear weopons or tanks the war would have the potential to be long and bloody. However, when France and Germany try to assemble their patheticly small armies, their soldiers will stay at home chanting, "Hell no, we won't go." The only ones that will fight will be Islamic Guerrillas (hope thats the person not the animal).

The remaining Terrorist left in the world will remember that the only reason they were organized in the frist place was to fight the Russians. Realizing their terrible mistake, they turn themselvs into the Americans and beg to be made into martyrs. America humbly obliges by airdropping them into Russian held terratory.

The U.S. and its allies (calling themselves the Coalition of Freedom for the first time) liberate Europe (once agian) through airstrikes and superior fire power. The Europeans are still unapreciative and in another socialist love-fest declare abortion manditory. European Caucasians are slated for extinction from that moment onward,

The misinformation about the causes of the Tsunami originated from some Egyptian magazine. If Al Jazeera reported on it then they were just reporting the story surrounding the article. I've never heard of anyone reporting that Israelis castrated Arabs.

You go on to make unfounded accusations and sweeping generalizations.

Al Jazeera doesn't report solely on supposed Western conspiracies. Check out their web page (http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage). Looks a lot line CNN's world news page, doesn't it? The only accusation that can be made against Al Jazeera is that they give a disproportionate amount of time to extremists when they do interviews on their prime time political talk shows. I've never watched the channel, but I've heard that this is true and that in this regard al-Arabiya is the better of the two news channels over there.

The rest of your reply is just insulting ad hominem attacks that don't really have anything to do with the question of whether the United States should censor Al Jazeera. All I'll say is that I'm one of the better friends America has on this forum. I give it a hell of a lot more support then many here, through thick and thin. I'm willing to support the war in Iraq. I'm not willing to support censorship.

Well, once China has developed its economy to a high enough level, and the SoL there rises, which it will eventually (as says Adam Smith):
a) Some Investment (ie the money that goes into cheap labour intensive industries) will leave for other places. Obviously.
b) Different Investment (ie money that goes into consumption goods, improved services like banking etc, research and development...) will replace it and bring in greater returns for both sides...as is happening in the coastal cities of China as we speak.
c) With an USA as proposed by Undelia, there'll be lots of Investment taken out of such a nationalist and xenophobic place, and that'll be looking for another place with a huge population, good infrastructure and lots of governmental goodwill, ie the east coast of China.

Well, she's not just a black woman, she's also an ex-president. Without the Republicans to attack them, who will? The democrats?
They'd probably not call it Monarchy, they'd call it Presidency...the titles will be proclaimed by FoxNews (now the only news broadcaster in the US).

Don't be so sure, the world's economy depends on the U.S. consumer. Your "firms" will be more than happy to pay the tarrif to earn any profit at all, and the shrinking elitist left will need their supply of French garbage.

It won't for long, my friend. With the Chinese, and the Indians improving their SoL, you'll have a more than a billion people with the same income as the average American. Hell, there's more than 200 million Indians classified as Middle Class right now.
The free market is a selfish one. When the Americans put tariffs on their markets, companies will make more by selling in India or China. The US undisputed rule over the world market is going to be challenged soon, all ideology aside.
Ahem, yes, I shall continue eating "Freedom Garbage" every day, along with my shrinking leftist friends...

And Putin has much more to lose from attacking the EU than to gain from it. Which is why he declared a friendship treaty recently.

What do you think the world will be like in 2025?

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears.
For what he never knew,
now man's reign is through.

But through eternal night.
The twinkling of starlight.
So very far away.
Maybe it's only yesterday.

Oh my. Of all the apocolypse theories I've heard, this takes the cake for most likely to happen.

Well.... this is pretty scary. But... if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen. Not too much I can do about it, except maybe try to become as independent as possible.

We're pretty much committed to that. It's probable that the global economy will overshoot.

Now, the main problem is not that we're reaching maximum output. It's that we're reaching maximum output, and *key* demand is continuing to rise. In a few years (current estimates range between 2006-2012).

Uh, huh, it's scary. Much of the way society is currently built will start crashing down (I'm not going to miss suburbia, in all honesty) within a few years...

- Global warming and desertification will wreak havoc
- Oil prices shot through the roof, and several wars in the Middle East as a result
- The American economy will go into decline, as will Western Europe and Japan as the poulation greying catches up with them.
- Deficits will explode for MEDCs, especially USA, which will have severe trade problems
- India and China will become economic superpowers
- The EU will expand eastwards
- Poverty and inequality (mainly in Africa) will increase.

Of course that's the reason. Demand is rising exponentially whilst the output is probably going to begin dropping in the near future if it hasn't already.

What's sad is that I didn't even know about this in depth until yesterday. What's sad is that it's like the human race is helpless to find a solution for this. What's sad is that likely a majority of the US population doesn't even realize this problem exists.

What's sad is that we are focusing on Social Security and a projected hole in it by the mid 21st century, when by then Social Security won't matter anymore anyhow.

I predict...

American power, though it may experience a brief surge in the near future, will be on the downswing by 2025, largely as a result of a bankrupt federal government and increasing isolation from the rest of the world.

Through the EU, Europe will grow in influence and probably join with India and/or a more democratic China in taking over many of America's former functions (i.e. globocop and underpinning of the global economy).

Unless something happens soon, global climate change will cause massive flooding, desertification of (most notably) the American Great Plains, as well as wreaking general havoc with the weather. Everywhere.

As Peak Oil approaches (and most likely passes), the global economy will take a serious hit, but in all probability will survive largely unchanged. If we're really lucky, someone (most likely at CERN or ITER) will make a breakthrough on fusion, and the more catastrophic problems associated with the collapse of the fossil fuel economy will be averted.

Technology and biology will become more and more integrated. It'll be like the Borg, but without the hive-mind part. I envision augmentation of the nervous system with computer systems, and augmentation of other systems with different technology (think hydraulic legs for jumping, or perhaps eye implants for vision outside the range of visible light).

The Internet will collapse under the weight of spam, MySpaces, LiveJournals, and blogs, as well as 50 million NS users (we can dream, can't we?).

By 2025 I predict:

WW3 will be on the verge of occuring in one of three ways:

1) India and Pakistan start fighting over border troubles and disputed territories. China will take advantage of the opportunity to expand, and will join in on the side of one of these nations. Nuclear war or an alliance domino like pre-WW1 will occur.

2) Palestinian terrorists will obtain WMDs and will release them in Tel Aviv or another major Israeli city. Israeli moderates will be swept aside and Israel will begin a brutal occupation of Palestine. Arab nations will object and declare war on Israel, the US will join in with Israel and different parts of Europe will side with either side.

3) China moves in to Russia. The US and NATO support Russia.

The free-market will have made oil less cost-effective and energy alternatives will be increasingly used.

Their will be a ten year period of cooling from 2015-2025 following a period of global warming up until 2015. Environmentalists will say this is a global cooling crisis and blame it on enviromental destruction.

The US will continue to fracture, until it's meltdown into civil war in 2050.

Extreme Western European socialist policies will lead to a large economic collapse sparking revolutions and extremist governments throughout Western Europe.

I will be leading Canada into a Golden Age of prosperity.

Africa will still be poor.

Danger! Overkill! I got carried away just a little bit here...
What do you think (apart from Europe will destroy itself and the US will foever bring peace and prosperity to the world...)

2005-2010
The world continues much as it has so far.
American troops eventually end the occupation of Iraq, but maintain a sizeable force on their military bases in the country. Insurgents still cause some uncertainty, but the now well equipped and ruthless Iraqi Security Police cracks down on any Islamic movements with great efficiency.
In Central Asia, much goes on as it has before. Some old dictatorships are overthrown and replaced by new ones, which all try and get support from the various powers.
India and Pakistan finally sign a peace and friendship treaty, and work towards an independent Kashmir, which is to be included in a new South-Asian free trade zone.
The Republicans continue to dominate US-Politics, with Hillary Clinton the last democrat to get even close to Jeb Bush’s numbers. Social Security and Retirement funds are privatised and monopoly laws are softened. The US Economy thrives on this, while the poor become poorer and public schooling becomes a nightmare. All in all, things are looking good though.
China continues to modernise, spending hundreds of billions on improved infrastructure and improving local industries. US trade officials still demand the Yuan to be freely floated, but cheap Chinese Labour is too important as that anyone could force China to do so. Relations with Taiwan remain largely as they are now.
In Europe, the fall-out of the failed constitution of 2005 continues to weaken all efforts to coordinate policies. Britain states repeatedly that it sees the EU as an FTA without any political function and resists any movement into that direction. The Russian government and EU-Leaders though declare a closer friendship treaty that is to open the way for an alliance of interests in later times.
The UN is reformed, with Germany, Brazil and Japan receiving permanent seats without veto-power. An African representative is planned but never introduced. Global Warming is still an unimportant issue, while crops in the third world and in Australia suffer from droughts and tropical storms claim hundreds of lives.
Islamic Terrorist Groups, such as Al Qaeda slowly fade away, as Osama Bin Laden suffers a stroke and dies, never to have been found or arrested. Ayman Al-Zawahiri vows to continue the struggle, but as the times change, new recruits become scarce and the war on terror becomes a thing of the past.

2010-2020
A new war in the Balkans stretches NATO to its limits, as the US-Government refuses to get involved. Popular opinion is against helping the Europeans, and NATO is quietly disbanded. EU Peacekeeping forces are greatly stretched, but manage to keep control in key areas, as diplomats begin negotiations. In the end, the EU is successful, as the Balkans become peaceful members of the EU and continue their rivalries diplomatically.
In the early 2010’s a shock goes through the world economy, as a popular movement inspired by Islamic clerics as well as Western democratic activism launches a revolution in Saudi Arabia. Thousands die as armed forces and demonstrators clash all over the country. US-officials are unsure how to react, as this is a popular, largely democratic movement against an autocratic regime. American popular opinion is also against any involvement in the issue. When the Saudi royal family is overthrown and killed however, the result is a massive break-in of stock prices all over the world. Hardest hit is the US, as trillions in Saudi-Investment suddenly disappear or are claimed by others and oil prices hit $100 per barrel.
In Iraq, a revolt of Sunni Muslims leads to civil war, splitting Iraq into three parts: Kurdistan, the Arabic Republic of Iraq and the South-East, which is eventually annexed by Iran.
In Europe the economies crumble as well, as Central Asian and Russian suppliers find themselves unable to fulfil oil demands. The Alliance between the EU and Russia is never realised, as all countries are once again drawn into a great depression.
China is very badly hit as well. As foreign demand diminishes and resources become harder to procure, China finally decides to float the Yuan and reform its banking system. The result is a collapse similar to those in the US and the EU, leaving the government on the ropes. For a time it looks like civil war could break out, but compassionate pleas from many sides bring the masses back from the brink, and the communist party is disbanded. Two new forces take its place, one Maoist party and a new direction, forming a curious mix of Chinese nationalism, Confucianism and Capitalism. This new party wins the general election and rules the nation for the years to come.
Israel suffers greatly under the sudden stop of US-aid and the spiralling world economy, leaving the Prime Minister with no choice but to downsize the armed forces and push for an immediate settlement with the Palestinians. A Palestinian state is created in the following year.
In the US the economic collapse has catastrophic consequences. As tax revenue crumbles, the Government cuts its spending as demand for its bonds is near nil, and no more funds are available. The space program is discontinued, as is much military research and an overhaul of national education systems. Furthermore, the democrats have now faded almost out of the picture, with the filibuster gone and public opinion firmly directed against weak-minded liberals. Strong nationalism leads to aggressive tariffs and quotas being introduced against foreign companies, who are often blamed for the economic collapse.

2020-2030.
The World is gradually recovering from the collapse. Oil continues to become scarce, and global warming has now made farming unviable in much of Australia, Southern Africa and so on, but the priorities of the world are on other things.
In the US, Fox Media has offered to buy the struggling CNN, the last news corporation other than Fox. When the US Government isn’t forthcoming with a decision, Fox sues at the Supreme Court, which eventually rules in favour of Fox. Civil Rights Groups are outraged, many Republicans hail the decision as a landmark, and most Americans couldn’t care less, as they haven’t been watching much news anyways.
The EU is making headway politically after the UK had declared itself no longer a full member during the depression. A new constitution is introduced, abandoning most national governmental departments and parliaments and replacing them with European ones. At CERN French scientists develop the technology for the peaceful use of nuclear fusion. The EU quickly realises the possibilities and begins to construct fusion plants and exports energy.
India and Pakistan are also recovering and increase their influence over formerly American-controlled central Asian nations in an attempt to secure more oil reserves.
Russia has become more centralistic during the depression, but is mainly directing its interest at Central Asia as well.
The UN, which had faded almost out of existence during the depression is reconstructed, abandoning the security council and giving every country votes based on population and other factors.
In China, the new government completes its reforms and reconstruction efforts successfully, and is in a strong position. The second largest country on Earth, it presides over the strongest economy and a powerful, reformed and modernised military.
In Taiwan, a referendum is held on whether the island should join the new mainland, which is successful. Talks begin immediately, as Chinese police forces are invited on the island and hailed as friends. In America, this new development is very concerning. Fearing Chinese expansion and losing its presence in Asia, the US is determined not to let the two nations unite. When diplomatic pressure is ignored by the Chinese, US warships begin to move. North of Taiwan, there is first contact as a Chinese drone is shot down. When US Special Forces are found on Taiwan, the unified Chinese governments react with anger. A deadline is set for the US to leave the area. When American officials refuse, a massive upset hits the world. A taskforce carrier group of the US Navy was attacked by a swarm of Cruise Missiles, and a nuclear carrier was hit so badly that it sunk the following day. More than 1000 US Crewmembers die.
The following days are spent with waiting for imminent nuclear apocalypse, as the US Military asks the president for the right to hit back with all might. Only the combined pressure of the entire world, and a threat by all other nuclear powers to side with whoever is being shot at first convinces the US President to be the better man and back off. From this day on, the US Hegemony over the planet is over.

2030-2040.
In combined elections the people of Pakistan and India unite their nations once more to form the new largest economy on earth. Proclaiming that they are not interested in military power, they stay neutral.
The EU is finally declared one single state, ending 2000 years of intra-european rivalry and an FTA is declared with Russia. Furthermore, a new alliance (similar to the old EU) is declared between Europe and the nations of North Africa, Kazakhstan and its neighbours, as well as with Canada and later Mexico. American protests are ignored, as they are based on ideology without facts to support them. Nuclear fusion technology is used wherever a nation was ready to comply with certain criteria. China soon developed its own version but the US refused, slowly developing its own fusion technology based on a different approach.
In America, liberalism and anti-government sentiment has lead to a gradual disappearing of an ordered police force. Local groups and companies are vying for the right to take care of security, often at gun point, leaving behind an anarchy.
FoxNews is no longer showing news from the world outside the US. Immigration was outlawed during the depression, and the import quotas were gradually decreased to reach practically zero in order to protect US Companies.
In the Middle East, stable Islamic democratic states have developed in Egypt, Syria and the Arabian peninsula. Kurdistan is also solidified, as the EU has prevented Turkish intervention. Iraq is going well, while Iran has increasingly become freer and is now usually referred to as Persia, linking it directly with the empires of the past.
In China, the past is now looked upon as the Mao Dynasty, in one direct line from the first emperor. The nation has become the new power in the world, generally keeping out of affairs that don’t affect it directly, but always ready to intervene to protect its interest. The rest of the world becomes slightly sceptical and anti-sinoism becomes increasingly popular in Europe. ;)

2040+
Well, America has become more and more of an outcast internationally, but its tale is not over. Eventually it may recover, rebuilding itself on the platform of the American Dream. It may not be able to do so by itself, but a time comes when they will accept foreign help. Global Warming becomes a scourge, flooding vast pieces of land (the Netherlands, New York, Shanghai) and millions die in annual famines and shortages of drinking water. Eventually the climate will normalise, as fossil fuels are no longer used, but the damage is done. The UN becomes the standard forum for nations to disband old feuds, coordinate policies and rebuild the ravaged ecosphere. China’s time comes and goes, followed by the final unification of interests when the UN becomes the central government body for Homo Sapiens.
Man will eventually look to the stars again and build space ships to found colonies on Mars and beyond…:P

Now YOU'RE someone I'd like to sit next to at a bar!

I'm going to add that antibiotic resistant bacteria and viruses will kill vast numbers of people. And there will be a huge chain of geological disasters... earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. There will be climate changes, thus habitat changes for animals not native to certain places, which will affect crops and such. Blah blah blah... ;)

Actually, hydrogen still won't be worth shit as fuel if we decide to switch to quasiturbines, which burn conventional fuel at like twice the efficiency of existing engines. Basically, we'll keep all our existing infrastructure, but only need to use it half as much.

By 2025, I will probably have forgotten all about this thread. Either that or trying to puzzle out whether Undelia was serious about what he was saying or not.

China will be fractured in a civil war after that big dam (forgot the name but it will be the biggest in the world) bursts, killing millions and sparking riots. Taiwan will be invaded but a combined sea based U.S. and land based Indian assault will utterly destroy the Chinese army. Along with this stuff and China losing its ability to manipulate its currency the last major Communist regime in the world will collapse.A sea/land based attack against the largest standing army in the world? At a time when China will be hitting its industrial upswing? Maybe if the gov't mandates forced conscription...
Actually, if you add in US air support (presumably from bases in India and from US aircraft carriers) and help from the Indian Navy, I don't think China would stand much of a chance. Their technology is still far behind ours and the accuracy and lethality of our current weapon systems would make their superior numbers moot. (Think of AC-130s backed up by fighters and/or combat heilos.)

The only problem is that with such an attack, the failing Chinese gov't would most definitely launch their limited number of nukes against India and the US (if their missiles can truly reach our shores) in a last ditch attack.

Now I recently heard of a US-Military wargame, which wasn't all that long ago. The enemy of choice was Israel, and a retired General took command of their forces.
The first day, this general took a whole lot of cruise missiles and fired them at the US Aircraft carriers. Apparently the damage was huge, and the fleet would've basically incapacitated for months.
From that day on, the general was bidden to follow orders from the wargame organisers, and the whole thing became a farce, in which the US was triumphant (the whole cruise missile thing was ignored by the way).
So there's always room for a surprise or two when the US would face a proper enemy.

Any other country would launch its nukes as well if it is close to being crushed. Like the USA.
And if they can shoot a guy into space, they can shoot a nuke at your shores, believe me.

Hmmm, that wargames bit sounds a lot like someone wasn't happy about losing and fired an 'ignore' cannon. They probably didn't want to display a weakness so they said 'you can't do that'.

Although in a real fight, rules are only for those who care to pay attention to them.

I disagree in part. The technology Clinton gave china for their missle systems and the access their spies were allowed to have brought them right up to par with delivery and guidance systems.

Why are people here so insistant on going to war with China? Don't they know that's suicide? A full scale war with China would most likely end in an nuclear exchange.

Hopefully there will be no more mention of Yu-gi-oh, or Pokemon.

China will challenge the United States for economic superiority only to be Destroyed in a third world war by Islamic Nuclear Weapons. After this terminators will be invented and will cast chaos into europe. we will shut down the terminators before they backfire on us (the US) and will save ourselves as the last requiem for human civilization. The United States will annex the now defunct New Soviet States of Russia (NSSR) and become even bigger, destroying the economies of all other nations. Aliens will land and sign a peace treaty with the United States of Earth (USE) and will coexist together, only to be shunned by humans because face it, we havent even accepted Blacks tottaly yet. it will be then that they will rise against us unkowingly reactivating the Enron Stock Initiative founded in 2015 which in a cloak of conspiracy aso happens to run Skynet. Skynet reactivates the terminators which destroy the aliens and then the terminators will make little cyborg babies with the humans (Don't ask how) and the human race will eventually die out leaving supercomputers and Cybornetic organisims run by AI to rule the planet for the next few millenia.

In Australia, New South Wales will still be beating Queensland at the State of Origin despite Queenslands attempts at cloning Wally Lewis and Gordon Tallis. Victorians will still be Victorians, much to the embarrassement of the rest of Australia, and we will eventually disown Victoria and replace them with Tasmania. New Zealand will still be pissed off about the Bledisloe cup, and will still be taking it out on the sheep. First Maori/sheep creature has been born, and found to be really tender.
