And if it did, what would be like? Is it possible for world government to be free? How would you rule the planet?

We've had a million threads on this already. And *sigh* once again I will voice my opposition to world government.....

How would you rule the planet? The same way I've been doing it until now.

It could work, but I think it'd be horrible, because I'm more of a libertarian, "small govt. is best" type of person.

The larger number of people you rule, the less lenient the government could be.
The government would become this huge, omnipresent force.

Both Nietzsche and H.G. Wells advocated world government. I think that it might work as a benevolent dictatorship, with full respect for human rights and civil liberties, but a greater restriction of political democracy.

It could not work, there would be too many layers of buearcracy (sp!) and communication would be a real issue.

Look at the EU, that can't even agree on a simple constitution between 25 nations, imagine trying to implement a law between 250+ nations, it will never happen because there is no way that every country will agree.

Cultrues are different, economies are different, politics are different in countries and because of these 3 things a world government can never work.

The Bible says it would and will work. Of course, no mere person could be king.

i'd be against a world government. i'm for a direct democracy, so the ideal world would be full of many little colonies of people, like ant colonies. each would be their own country.

There's no way it'd work. You can't unite people of such way different backgrounds. For example, Muslims and Christians don't exactly get along. Never have, never will. The economy would suck, the living status would go down the drain. Liberals (Europe) and the conservatives (America) would rip each other's guts out. NO. There's just no way. Wars would break out, nations would try to seceed, and we'd be back to square one.

Let's see:

By peaceful negotiation: if the EU is any example, it would take 10,000 years to get to a world constitution and world government.

By force: The US and Europe could pull it off - but most of the world would end up like Iraq and I'm not sure that's a good idea.

Who says there HAS to be a world government? Is it really such a good idea?

Well, though this is not my stance, no one's mentioned it yet, so I'll do it for the fun of it:

WHY DO WE EVEN NEED GOVERNMENTS!? Let anarchy reign!!!!

Once again, I hate anarchy, but since no one's said it, I'll put it on the floor.

As long as it was intensely legislative and deliberative (i.e., not a dictatorship), and gave freedoms and rights, as opposed to taking them away, I'd be for it.

I'm thinking canidates elected by province (and don't worry- the provinces won't be Rode island size- I'm thinking Texas, Montana size). Then their are two elections- governer, and legesislative.

Two legislatures, house and senate, with rules and term limits for each.

Then the governers govern on a provincial level.

There are also local elections.

The there is the judical branch. Admissions to it are proposed by legislative members, and voted on by the legislative body. The judical branch- state level is apponited by provincial goverener. The world court deals with war crimes, and other "world- related" affairs. The provincial courts deal with provincial affairs.

There will be two branches of the army- state militias, and the world army. State militias need the aproval of the goverment to act, and can be overruled by the world legislature. The world militia needs legislative approval to act, but can act without borders, where as state militias can only act within their borders, or provide assistance to neighboring provinces.

Any suggestions? Drop me a line.

Not only does one have to think about the large buerucratic mess that would result, but think, governmental corruption, now on a global scale. Each nation with it's own interests, most of them are third world countries...

This actually sets up a really good plot for a political thriller or something.
