Well, since Menatl Illness is political issue for many (but not nearly enough) I figured a poll like this would be on topic. I have a Mental Illness, Bipolar Disorder, also know as Manic-Depression. Its made my life, um, challenging. Kinda like the poor dumb Greek dude that had to push a boulder uphill for eternity would describe his task. Mental Illness is not shits n' giggles. Anyone who would say "Your mental illness is in your head. You could be normal if you wanted to." or something similar gets a special medal. Its for stating both the obvious and the idiotic in a single sentence less than 17 words long. These medals are special because they're big enough to pin through your chest
So I'm wondering who else on this board has suffered a mental illness, who hasn't, and whether you think the access the professional treatment for Mental Illness is adequate in your country of residence. Or if you don't give a toss one way or the other.
Share your experiences and why you voted as you did. Thanks.

You are a one in five statistic.
My wife is a phyciatric nurse and so I can say that treatment and service access in this area of the UK is excellent. Service users may disagree.
The rest of NS shouldn't be too smug one in five need hospital treatment for a mental illness at one time or another in their lives (that doesn't include geriatric illnesses!).

I'm not sure if "access" also covers the money issue. I'd say yes you have access to the facility but most people here(US) can't afford it.

did you know that Sigmund Freud theorised all mental illness was due to an excess or lack of sexual activity, just a curiousity

Did you know that in the North Pole Gartref means "He who is totally insane" and in Antarctica it means "Penguin fluffer"?

My list of Diagnosed mental disorders: Manic Depression, OCD, ADHD, Psychotic tendencies, and another one I keep forgetting the name of.
Do I believe I have them?: No. Doctors will try and pump drugs into anyone out of the ordinary. I suggest that you disregard what you have been told. You are merely unique, and no doctor can tell you what is truly wrong. As long as you are no harm to society, who cares?
I did aparrently almost get committed a little while back - aparrently i'm a ticking psychotic bomb. :D

He beleived that everything was due to a lack/excess/desire for sex though.

My dad has Anxiety and Depression. Treatment for him was pretty accesable. He saw a psychiatrist and got perscribed anti-depressants. They help most of the time but it doesn't stop him hitting the roof some of the time.

Some of my friends have Aspergers syndrome, a higher form of autism. There are excellent support groups for that here in the Netherlands[1]. Mental healthcare for young people on the whole is reasonably well - provided you *want* the help. For the not-so-young there are huge waitinglists.
[1] Possibly because it is getting somewhat of a "fashion" syndrome.

Okay, my absurd mistake made the Poll portion basicly broken. Theres no option for NO and NOT adequate.
I lived in fear of what the meds I'd be prescribed would do to me if I askled for help. I had no diagnosis until was 28, but I knew something was wrong with me. I self medicated and ended up getting strung out on Morphine. Blah!
I was afraid the meds would rob me of my creativity, but my illness and my self-medicating did that anyway. Once Since I finally got a diagnosis and started treatment, things have been much better.
The access to care is good in theory, but in practice not enough is available to treat everyone. There is a shortage of psychiatrists, which apparently has to do with several factors, one of which is that there just aren't enough people graduationg as Psychiatrists...not enough spots open in the programs @ Unis that offer them. The elevel of training in the field is very good, but everone is overworked. It is free however, and sevral charities do exist to help pick up the slack in terms of counselling and therapy.
You have to want treatment for it in order to get it though.
I knew I wasn't alone, I just wanted an amusing title for the thread. Also wanted to show I have a good sense of humour about it, up to that certain point.
GATREF: HOw dare you! My Spleen left me after a lover quarrel between my kidney's and my livers, during an otherwise pleasant near-overdose. Its a very hurtful memeory for me. I am offendicated! My liver and kidneys won't tell me what really happened. I think it was a love triangle gone wrong. Now I search the world for my spleen, sad and lonely and near death without it. I bet you know where my splean is don't you? (Why isn't there a smile for :mental case: ?)

I have some anti-social tendencies and I am somewhat of a hypochondriac. I even carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer. I am also paranoid to a degree. Some say I'm obsessive-compulsive.
I have major depressive disorder, dysthymia, PTSD, anxiety, and panic disorder with mild agoraphobia. I have some meds that work for the anxiety/panic, but they are addictive. My depression is treatment resistent. I've been on every drug in teh book fro my depression with no luck. I hope some day they finally come out with a drug that can help me. I have suffered from depression since I can remember. The PTSD is from things that have happened to me from 5-19 years old and is really hard to get rid of. They anxiety/panic comes from the PTSD and I didn't have to deal with it until I was a bit older.

Seriously though, I have been held for a 72-hour observation period once. Taught me a valuable lesson. The lesson was this: Never endanger yourself or others. At least, no more so than necessary. As long as you're not dangerous, you can be as crazy as you want to be. :D
