Does anyone know where I could find a list of the poorest countries in the world? This is just out of curiosity. Thanks!
How about typing "world's poorest countries" in Google?

Here is a list of countires where the average person makes less than $1000 U.S. dollars a years. These figures are from 2003 and are adusted to take into account the low cost of living in these countries. A direct conversion into U.S. dollars would give even lower amounts. Also remember that these are averages and not everbody in the country makes even this much money. There are people who pretty much make nothing.
Sierra Leone 530
Malawi 590
Tanzania 620
Burundi 630
Congo Dem Rep 660
Guinea-Bissau 680
Ethiopia 710
Congo Rep 730
Madagascar 800
Yemen, Rep 820
Niger 830
Zambia 850
Nigeria 900
Mali 960
You can get the complete list by googleing: PPP GDP

Wow that's sad for the people in East Timor. I really do wonder how they make it. I'm assuming they are a tribal type of country? Hunting and gathering type..

No, East Timorese aren't nomadic, just very poor.
Although I am strongly against measuring income in US dollars, its inaccurate.
Income should be measured in something like hamburgers. That forces the US right down the scale. :p

I am strongly against measuring income in US dollars, its inaccurate. Income should be measured in something like hamburgers. The figures I gave before were Purchasing Power Parity figures which are adjusted for differences in cost of living in these countries. It's sort of like measuring in hamburgers. It takes into account the cost of food, housing, fuel, etc. However, it probably makes sense to look at life expectancy and other indicators when deciding if one country is better off than another.
Do you know if the PPP index was variable weighted (ie poor countries are more weighted to food)?
Either way PPP will be flawed. In PPP indexes theres always a flaw.
Even hamburgers are a flawed measure. :(

That's true, because they are a fuck of a lot cheaper in the US than in the UK. And people in the UK generally make less. (Unless you are at the very bottom of the totem pole).

As I understand it, PPP measures are varible weighted. I'm sure the method isn't perfect, but it is far more accurate than a straight currency conversion into U.S. dollars. I think that PPP measures are probably adequate for most purposes. Of course you might want to look at life expectancy etc.

Very true. And, there are a handful of people in those countries who are richer than sin itself. The figures should be updated though. Nigeria is up to $1,000 as of 2004.

The problem remains "how do you define powerty?"
Some have a very low income, or even no income at all, but can still be considered as richer than others (access to health care, access to non polluted fresh water, access to natural ressources, services naturally provided by their environment and so on).
That's how the indian province of Kerala, even if it has a lower average income than Brazil, can still be considered as less poor.
GDP or PPP remains only monetary indicators and in no way indicate the level of life, I mean if you dont have money to purshase anything but that you are able to grow the food you need, to drink fresh water, you are still in a way richer than someone who has a little income but which is not enough to supply his/her own needs..

God what a lame life they have. No work to go to. Just sitting around doing nothing other than gathering food/making babies in a tropical land. With all that sun and heat. Must suck.
Even hamburgers are a flawed measure. :(
Fine, Crunchy Chicken Filet Sandwiches then.
