Which of these smaller cities is best, and why?

Please wait for the poll.

Albany, definitely. It looks the nicest, in my opinion.

Yea... Just don't look at Arbor Hill. ;) (I guess all great cities have a ghetto of some sort!)

The train station is by far the best in the state, and the airport, although located next to...farms... is a fully servicable airport, and cheap to travel through thanks to Southwest Airlines, and nicely designed at the same time, unlike many of the other cities listed.

Schools are good, too.

How about

Venice
Florence
Aix-en-Provance
Mont Pellier
York

;)

I have been to or through most of the list and nothing really stands out to me.

San Francisco only has 800,000 people. That's not big at all.
I vote The City by the Bay. And if you have a commiption because it's too damn big, I vote Reno. Gambling!

Both too big, the highest cities he listed are under 200,000. Concord is in the San Fran bay area though.

I've never been there, but I've seen pictures. I love the funky looking identical buildings that are the office buildings for the state gov. Looks so alien.

I don't understand why so many people are voting for Albany. Anyone that's been there udnerstands that in comparison, its only a scimpy version of NYC. There isn't much entertainment and there's a lot of crime and pollution.

I live in NY so I know, but I have been to all but Boise, Salem, and Santa Fe. From what I've seen, Raliegh-Durham's the best. Yea they're 2 cities linked by an airport, but the people are nice, the main thoroughfaires move at safe yet comfortable paces, and there's plenty to do.

Raleigh has over 316,000...

Out of the ones on this list, I had to vote for Albany. It's a shame that you didn't include Corpus Christi (279,000+), because I definitely would've voted for it :p.

Yes, but it's in the southeast, therefore all the black people only count as 5/8 of a person. What? That rule's no longer in effect?

Austin's way too big :D. I do have a friend from Corpus Christi (well, Port Aransas) who lives there, though.

I'd have to say Charleston, because it has a thriving downtown, it's full of history, and it's got a lot of great food.

I'd vote for my own home town, Columbus GA, but it's really not that great of a town.

Sorry. You're right. 3/5. For allocating how many congressmen the state would get to elect and for determining electoral college votes.

well the definition of "city" provides interesting conversation

Consider that the city of San Francisco has but about 800,000 souls... while the metropolitan area of San Francisco holds somewhere around 5 million.

Same with most large (and San Francisco is one...) cities:

city/metro area (approximations used):

Chicago: 3 million / 8 million
New York City: 8 million / 15 million
Los Angeles: 4 million / 11 million
Washington, DC: 700,000 / 4 million

Yeah, seeing as upstate NY is close to Canada, the place is very clean and the people are almost as nice. Rochester's a very nice city if you ask me, ma sister just graduated from the university there, the place is perfect. They have all neccessaties and luxuries within a block of some park which name I forgot. :)

Note the words "small city" San Francisco and Austin are too big to fit in the catagory. I just didn't speak up, cause I didn't want to sound like too big of an asshole.

I'll disagree with you there. The taxes SUCK. The city council cares not a whit for what the citizens actually want--they like to pander to the university crowd because they're more "cultured". The Madison school board also completely ignores what the citizens want as well.

And they put in mini-rotaries where people were never instructed on how to use them! Everyone likes cutting left on 'em.

I never understood why people called it the San Francisco metropolitan area, nor why they call it "The City". San Jose is bigger than Oakland and SF combined.
The weirdest thing is that SF is also only like 8 miles wide by 10 miles long. To me, coming from Phoenix, that is a tiny tiny city.

Manhattan is ~3 miles by ~20 miles (about 30 square miles total), and it's freaking huge... I mean, the buildings certainly add to that feeling, but you must admit that it's not small by any means. And, oddly enough, it's quite hilly.

Fresno, CA!!!!

Let's look at the facts!

450,000 people.
3 hours from San Fran and LA. 2 hours from Yosemite or Sequioa Nation Park and Kings Canyon National Park.
3 ski resorts within 2 hours drive.
Beach, 2 hours away.
Desert 3 hours away.
Quiet city
Clovis is next door (my real hometown) and Clovis has Clovis cops. They actually have criminals scared. Shot a man 42 times once! heh ehe. He murdered a woman for her purse.
Great weather, I can wear short in January usually. Very little rain yet the richest agricultural area in the world. I hate raisens but everything can't be perfect.

There you go. Spit on me if you want, I will walk blindly forward singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic and drinking a beer!!!
