OK, so the Candian Coast Guard just seized a Portugese trawler off the coast of Newfoundland. linkypoo (http://sympaticomsn.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1117478085507_112887285?hub=Canada)
The captain actually had an outstanding warrant dating back to 2003, but this was the first time he was stpuid enough to enter Canadian waters since the warrant was issued. The Portugese really piss me off. They come into the waters of another nation (Canada isn't the only country they pull this shit on) and just ignore all laws and treaties, fishing, illegaly, to their hearts content. Meanwhile, Canadian fishermen suffer under quotas imposed to help the fish population recover from overfishing. When they get caught, they hightail it back home and their governemnt refuses to even discuss the issue.

Canada has had disputes over similar matters with the US and FRance, but ultimately reached a resolution with each because those nations have actually come to the table for talks and then for the most part kept to their word. Spain and Portugal on the other hand, just don't give a toss. I'm sick and tired of living in the wimpiest and most polite nation in the world. I want to see my government impose strict interdiction on any fishing vessel entering our waters. Any trawlers breaking the laws would be immediately boarded. Those that don't destroy their illegal nets, dump their catch and pay an immediate fine will be towed back to Canadian port. The crew would be put on planes back home and the vessel destroyed. Playing nice doesn't work, but if the gov't did this, I'm sure there would be all kinds of outcry in the international community, mostly from other nations that flout the kinds of laws the Porugese trawlers regularily do (Japan, Spain, France and China come to mind)

What do you guys think. Is what I propose totally overboard, or do us Canadians have a right to resort to more drastic measures when enforcing the sovereignity of our maritme borders?

I know a lot of Portuguese people who are very nice. They even smile politely when I make stupid jokes like calling them Pork'n'cheese... mmm pork and cheese...

Hell, I figure we should just torpedo the sonsabitches, but that's just me.

The Russians are bad enough, always (Happened once) running out of fuel and then gliding into the harbour. Man, a shitload of nationalistic Russians running around screaming insults at one another. I dunno how half of them weren't dead just from the sail out to off the 'banks, but there they all are; all fifty or so, about half-half Mafiya and Fascist.

My grandfather used to carry a shotgun in the engineroom for dealing with the Portugese. The bastards came right in, cut the nets off their mooring, and then simply stole the net and assosciated load. Unfortunately, those bastard Portugese don't recognize (And if they do, I say we use whatever Canadian troops we have left to ethnically cleanse Portugal of the Portugese.) that doing that to any family that happens to live on an island where fishing is the primary source of income is a bad thing.

Little shits should be sunk outright. The best part is where the international community goes: "Oh Christus! We can't rape the Canadians over and over anymore!"

And then we use JTF-2 to assassinate Major Schmidt, that dumb-fuck of an F-16 pilot.

Well, I figure I'll go get more alchohol and go on a binge for a few days ranting about this. I'll tell you how it went.

I'm behind you guys 100%. Seems to me the problem is a lack of will; consider the example of the Aussies and the Viarsa, a Uruguayan poaching ship - they chased her 2,500 miles in stormy Antarctic seas and confiscated the ship and put the crew on trial.

Board them, seize the ship and crew and let the Portuguese bask in the warm glow of world attention - the media will surely make a deal out of such an international incident. A number of South American nations and Korea seem to have the same problem understanding fishing quotas as the Portuguese. I think you should teach them that NO means NO.

Well, Australia is rather funny about what it does. Indonesians and Uruguayans stealing our fish? We go impound the boat. The Japanese do the same - nothing happens.

Why is that?

They are important trade customers, the ones who conduct scientific whaling!

I agree with you on that. Our new Victoria class subs should be good enough to talk out some fishing vessels.

And with the Major Schmidt thing. I think it's strange that even with the largest contingent in ISAF (even larger then the American one) we've only lost about 7 people in Afgahnistan, and 4 of those were from American friendly fire (and somehow the Americans have lost over 200).
