Bad Movie Theatre Experiences

What are some bad/annoying movie experiences that you've had?

Just today, when I was seeing Episode III, there were no less than four GROUPS of people ruining the movie for everyone else.

1. A toddler consistently crying and whining and the mother not doing anything about it for at least half an hour.

2. A group of teens right in front of me. One of them with a cell phone, who kept flipping it open and closed. Another who couldn't seem to keep still. And a boyfriend and a girlfriend who had nothing better to do but make out...

3. A family who at the begining of the movie, couldn't seem to make up their minds. They went back and forth through the movie theatre at least 5 times, never seeing the entire ROWS that were open to them.

4. A family right behind me. Two children who couldn't live without commenting on every little thing that happened in the movie, and a mother who laughed at the most inappropriate times, like the final dialogue before the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Completely ruined the mood of the movie...

Ugh...

Thats about as bad as you can have it. But for me the worst was a fuzzy screen which they couldn't fix, and a broken air conditioner.

My girlfriend and I went to a 10pm showing of Spiderman II. This lady had about 5 under 8 yr old kids w/ her and refused to keep them quiet. When I asked her to keep them quiet (politely I might add) she told me to "F*ck off". I went and complained to management. They threw her out, let us into a new showing, and gave us some free popcorn.

sounds about right..... Not sure where you are, but Wehrenberg theatres here has a commercial right before the movie starts with a loud baby crying, a cell phone, people talking, etc. all very annoying things, which seem obvious to anyone with a rational thought, but appartantly no one takes the warning to heart.

Yeah, that's the reason I don't go to the movie theatre that often anymore. I get better quality at my house and can have more(or less) friends over. Another bad thing nearby where I live is the showing rooms aren't sound insulated. So you can hear three movies at once, completely ruining the mood. Last time I went was to see the village, and some loud, annoying movie played in the showing room next to us. Completely ruined the movie, had to buy the DVD to enjoy it. So yeah, movie theaters suck. And does anyone else think it's getting worse with time?

Are these bad experiences in franchise theatres?

Whenever I go to see a movie I go to a local second run theatre. It has a balcony, a huge screen and most of the people who go there are considerate enough to turn off their cellphones. It's a great place to go for interactive movies like the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I remember seeing a re-release of Reservoir Dogs and half the people clapped when Mr. Orange (Tim Roth) shot Mr. Blonde (Mike Madsen). In response the other half of the theatre booed and then everybody started laughing.

And does anyone else think it's getting worse with time?

Yes. People don't follow the rules anymore. Maybe what we need is a security force that will remove anyone that overtly disturbs the movie experience.

Or...We should be allowed to sack anyone who does so. I honestly don't understand what happened at the theatre today. I was surprised that we didn't rise as one, and slay them...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so. I think it's because people don't respect one another anymore. They don't care if they're wasting someone else 7$(Or whichever currency you use) or if theyr'e ruining the experience. Basically, people in general are becoming pure-bred poobags. Sad, really. And in response to Oye Oye, I agree that local theaters are usually better. More friendly I'd say.

Sort of like what ushers used to do?

Edit: Granted, I'm too young to be acquanited with ushers, but it always seemed like a good idea to me.

I don't know about soundproofing issues, but there is definitely a deterioration of sorts where appropriate behaviour is concerned. To a certain extent, I blame the out-of-control ticket prices and fat mark-ups on food items that all the cinema chains have encouraged in the last ten or fifteen years.

It's giving a certain segment of the audience an inflated sense of entitlement, which, coupled with an ingrained, inflated sense of self/lack of empathy for others, results in poor experiences for whole groups of movie patrons.

I walked out of a film a few years back because of the indescribably foul emanations coming from an unwashed pair of teens sitting in the front row. I decided I didn't want to smell their rank armpits and crotches for two hours just to see a movie - and really, why should anyone have to smell their stench in public? It underscored for me that people seem to have forgotten that in public, there are certain agreed-upon conventions such as basic overall cleanliness that demand to be observed.

The screaming children, the obnoxious cel phones, the restless and/or horny youths, the sticky floors, all of it add up to me relying to ever greater extents on my home theater system.

I was at the movies once and this bitch in front of me with long hair had it hanging over the back of the chair. I'm 6'4" so it was on my knees so I asked her to move it, she gave me some bullshit about it being her right to have her hair where ever she wanted it and turned around huffily to face the front again. Undeterred I turned to my friend and said in a voice loud enough to be heard, "do you have a lighter?" She moved her hair.

I went to see Signs with some of my friends and these girls sat behind us and wouldnt' shut up through the entire thing. In the middle of a quiet part they tap one of my friends on the shoulder (freaking him out) to ask what had happened.

It got better though. One of my friends was so ticked she was lining up pennies to throw at them and I knew she wouldnt' be subtle about it so I offered to chuck them backwards. I casually catapulted one over my shoulder and got a nice, satisfying "smack" one of the girls was wearing a tank top and it got her right on the bare part of her chest. They assumed it was the kids in front of us, so they got out their change, gearing up to throw it at them when this cascade of change starts to roll down the theater. That's right. One of them spilled her change purse, there must have been at least $10 in change...

After the movie was over, they were scouring the theater for change.

Second run theatres are also cheaper. The place I go to sometimes has a two for one special and will show a film like Saving Private Ryan and then show a film like Kelly's Heroes. So you can watch the feature and then stick around to see the film it was based on.

I worked at movie theaters for years, so I got a ton...but I'll stick to being a patron-

At a special showing of Fantasia there was a kid running up and down the stairs and his father evetually said, "Come here little monkey, you want some meat, have some meat." which made me think it might actually have been a monkey, but I never got a chance to check.

Same showing, someone was taking flash photos. Of a movie. yeah...

Had someone sitting next to me in a different movie that not only kept getting calls on her cell phone, but was actually taking them. I started to figure out if I had enough money to replace her phone if I smashed it against the wall, but when I determined that I did she finally stopped getting calls.

Highlight as an employee might be when I was a projectionist and the ushers couldn't find a manager (suck ass managment) so they wanted me to go in for a disturbance. Turned out to be a girlfriend giving her boyfriend a 'favor' (ahem). They didn't notice the ushers entering and exiting or me standing behind them, so I just said in a normal voice, "You gotta go." I think she bit down.

I JUST got back from seeing EP III and had to sit about 3 rows back from the screen. I have a crick in my neck and half the movie moved so fast that, from the distance and perspective of my seat, I couldn't keep up. :( I'm probably going to go back for a mid-day showing later this week so I can see what happened in the "blurry" parts.

As for a really bad experience, but different from most of yours'...

I went to see Jurassic Park...tripping on some really "good" LSD. When the T-rex was chasing the jeep, it looked like it was coming out of the screen at me. It scared me so bad that I almost crawled over the back of my chair to hide. :p

I currently work at a theatre, as a projectionist.
A few things:
If a customer complains about anything in a movie, almost always the managers will give them a pass, or their money back. They will also make sure the problem is "taken care of".
The ushers where I work LOVE to kick people out. If someone is using a cellphone, they usually just take it up until the person leaves. We do that a lot when people are text messaging. Also, I can spot cell phones from booth(they light up), and will tell ushers when I do.
Ushers walk auditoriums to check on audience behavior. I walk them to check the picture. But I also look for bad behavior.
On weekends, we also have hired police that do this.

If you ever have a problem, I am sure that any theatre will investigate and deal with it. Just tell them something like "There are people on the second to back row, to the left side and they keep on talking and it is really annoying."
It is likely that you will get a pass, the people will be kicked out, and you can enjoy the rest of the movie.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease...

I had almost the exact same thing happen once. My exact (rather loud) response to the one who tapped me on the shoulder was: "If you would shut the fuck up and watch the movie, you'd know what was going on!"

The rest of the theater broke out in laughter and applause. :D

First, it reminds me of those crazy people who stand up in films where big name actors show skin and take pictures, like the women who all stand up as soon as Tom Cruise's shirt comes off and snap millions of photographs - do they not have they internet where they can find this without wastig film? BEFORE the movie comes out, I might add.
And, I am very familiar with the cell phone sh*t - I can't remember the movie, but it was semi dramatic, so it was not too loud, and a quarter of the way into the movie, some chica gets a call on her cell, answers it, and sends the next 50% of the movie chatting with a friend. Had I been closer, I would have confronted her or her friend next to her, but people did that and they ignored them. :headbang: It's so annoying to listen to someone's conversation when you want to watch a movie.

Well...my least favorite experience actually has to do with the theatre itself.

We have two first-run theatres in my town, and the last FIVE films I have seen at one of the theatres have all had sound problems, the latest being "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"

Normally you attribute volume problems to your personal taste, but in these five instances the volume was, according to everyone there, was either WAY too loud (The final Matrix), or WAY too soft (Hitchikers Guide). Not only that, but the "Surroundness" of the Surround sound is sorely lacking. During Hitchhikers, the sound shifted from one side of the theatre to the other and back, up until about the last 20 minutes of the movie. It even cut out completely for about 2 minutes at one point...nobody was pleased.

After Hitchhiker's Guide, I expected theatre employees to be waiting outside the screen entrance with passes or coupons...which is what ALWAYS happens whenever the slightest thing goes wrong at the other theatre in town.

Nobody.

After a long period of getting the run around from three different employees, including a manager, I loudly and firmly (or to be more accurate...yelling obscenities right in his face), told them that they ran a second rate establishment, that their competition was light-years ahead of them in terms of customer service and satasfaction, and that they had lost my buisness for all time.

Not suprisingly, and article on attendance for Star Wars in the local paper showed an amazingly skewed percentage of those who saw the movie, myself included, went to the "other" theatre.

...erhm, rude people. The morbidly obese man who sat near the back during Gattaca, finished his TWO large tubs of popcorn, then proceeded to fall asleep and snore...very loudly.

I think someone near the back threw a drink at him. He left shortly after that. :D

Didn't see this one in the theatre, ripped it off the net instead, but I thought I should bring it up as a cautionary warning: King Arthur...

The only 'good' moment in that pathetic piece of celluoid was when the chick who plays Guinevere, and I should note that she was clearly not hired for her acting skills but just to look pretty, appears in this ridiculous leather outfit that made me burst out laughing.

I assure you that at that time I needed a laugh for that movie had gotten me into a serious depression.

Seriously, the only thing that 'movie', and I'm really stretching the definition of the word "movie" here, if I were honest I would have to use a few explicits, proved is that with enough $$ you can get ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING in the theatre. Even straight-to-video would have been too good for that 'movie'.!

Often times its the constant key-tapping if they're very close to you but mostly its the bright light of an open phone that distracts. It can wait until after the movie, otherwise you wouldn't be there.

I could understand the beeping of the keys but that can be silenced. Also I don't see how somebody can be distracted by a light from a cell phone.

Well, the girl next to me threw up, which wasn't great, as it doesn't smell too nice. Also Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was ruined for me by a load of loud teenagers who just couldn't seem to concentrate, and then a load of people walking out before the end was also distracting. Come on, everyone knows it's a long movie!

It is very distracting, in a dark room you can see the light from a phone a mile away, just out of the corner of your eye. It does get on my nerves.

Today, in me and my sister's quest to see Star Wars, we went down to the Emeryville theater. The parking garage (which you have to pay to park in) was crowded, and so I was very stressed.

Up near the top, we spotted a parking place right next to some truck. I drive a car, by the way. So I pull in, and the turn is too sharp, so I end up rubbing my door against his bumper. I can't get in without further damaging the car so I try going out, and it rubs some more. I then finally manage to get the car out of the spot, and into one more easy to park in, only to find a gigantic scratch and a dent in my door. The truck wasn't damaged.

Then when I go in to buy tickets (after the movie was already starting), I ask for tickets to the 9:00 showing. The ticket lady informs me that it's sold out. And that the 9:45 showing is also sold out.

So, fuming, I stomp back to the car, and get in and drive away as fast as possible, because parking is free if you're not there longer than 30 minutes. We were there 25.

Not to be cheated out of seeing a movie (I wasn't about to go back home with a dent in the car and nothing to show for it) I drive down to this other theater (which is actually a much older, classier, better theater) and me and my sister see their 9:45 showing of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

How do you know? Perhaps if you stopped arguing with her for a minute and find out the type of person she is, what she likes doing and all that jazz you'll see that first impressions aren't always the last. You do know how to talk normally, right?

...Ugh...

Oh, that is definitely the worst combination one can imagine or encounter - and people wonder why some turn to the Dark Side...

The only incident I can remember which really bugged me was during "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon": This one guy not only had his cellphone switched on, he kept receiving calls (without answering them), just sat there and let his cellphone ring with an annoying melody.
I really despise those ignorant bastards, therefore he received a well aimed M&Ms bombardment (and I'm not the only one who felt like that...) - Night vision goggles would've been priceless, stuff was flying at him from all over the place. Unfair? Hey, people have been shot for less...

Other than that, I can't understand people who come to the movies to have a discussion, who don't mind they ruin the experience when they start relationship infights, or worst, when they have already seen the movie and tell the audience what they think about it aloud while we haven't even seen half the movie. Oh, how a force-choking would come in handy sometimes...

you're still a wee bairn! it's highly unlikely that you're gonna meet the love of your life, the girl you wanna spend the rest of your life with at your age and if you do it's even less likely that you'll start dating now and then end up getting married etc, you need to get out there and have some fun, gain a little bit of experience at dating, if this girl is the one for you, it'll happen eventually and it'll work out a lot better because you've both had time to grow and develop your personalities and beliefs etc

I know that, but as you get older, you go through experiences which can sometimes change your beliefs (I'm not saying that will happen, just that it could), in 10 years time you won't be the same person you are today. And I know you can't just stop liking the girl, and i know that can really suck, but you have to try and move on, you must like other girls too so go out and have fun with them

eh, i got some for you anyways. Need i mention the group of little kids who think that by cheering they can make spiderman win faster?

I've also had the crying baby, the hoodied chavs who shout obscenities as loud as possible (for those not aware - Chavs are thuggish boys of about 15 who wear hoodie tops and burberry caps. they like to show off how tough they are by being stupid)

but here's a new one which happened not that long ago.
I was with a group of friends (6 of us total) and we'd queued up for a half hour more than anyone else to see Shrek 2. We got in, took the best seats (hey, we were there first) and what happens? a group of almost 30 little kids all turn up and the 2 parents with them ask us to have our seats so the kids can sit together. (and do what? talk more?)
So Tom, being nice in the extreme, moves over, but the rest of us say no (with the occasional expletive in there). they go to the management to complain, we present our case and the family get told they can, if they wish, purchase a discounted ticket to another screening and queue up in advance for it but oh no, it's the kid with the screen-obscuring balloon's birthday today so the management offers us all free tickets to 3 films of our choices each if we let them have our seats. Sorted, we thought. very good indeed!

A lot of the things mentioned previously annoy me, particularly loud people. My friend left his phone on once, he has a loud ring tone on his phone, he got a call, it was annoying, he answered it, doubly annoying. I told him to turn it off or at least to silent, he said he would. 10 minutes later, he gets another call, loud again.

Other bad experience was watching a film when some kid next to me spilled his entire box of popcorn on my lap accidentally, sticky clothes are not nice.

Sam Niel was born in Ireland. Although Geffory Rush and Hugh Jackman were both born here.
Um, sorry to burst your little bubble there, but that's another person you can't claim as your own. I assume you mean Sam Neil. True, he was born in Ireland in 1947. To NEW ZEALAND parents, and moved back to NEW ZEALAND when he was 7.
He went to boarding schools and then attended the Universities of Canterbury and Victoria (in NEW ZEALAND). He has a BA in English Literature. Following his graduation, he worked with the NEW ZEALAND Players and other theater groups. He also was a film director, editor and scriptwriter for the NEW ZEALAND National Film Unit for 6 years. His first feature film was Sleeping Dogs (1977, directed by Geoff Murphy).
He then moved to Australia and his performance in My Brilliant Career (1979) was noticed in London by British actor James Mason who lobbied for Neill to get the lead role in The Final Conflict (1981). Because of this, Neill moved to England where he also became famous as the title character in "Reilly: The Ace of Spies" (1983) (mini). After his Great Britain stint, he moved back to Australia in the late 1980s.
In 1993, he achieved "commercial and critical success" with Jurassic Park (1993) and The Piano (1993 - a NEW ZEALAND movie).
He now lives just out of Queenstown, NEW ZEALAND, on his own Winery - called 'Sleeping Dogs' winery (have a guess as to how/why he came up with that name). The BBC docu 'Space' has Sam Neil presenting. His parts were filmed in and around his property.

Hope this has cleared up the confusion somewhat.

Getting back to Bad Movie Experiences, I'd say probably the worst one was watching 'The Others' with Nicole Kidman.
Man, was that terrible. Ohhh...scary. A door is open. Now it's closed. Now it's open. Wait!! It's closed again. Oh god. I am so terrified.

Worst experience ever.

Closely followed by 'Titanic'.

Oh and when I went to see 'Spiderman II' there was some smart arse teenager who thought he could impress his mates by making dumb comments all the way through. That is until I got up went over to him and told him to shut the fuck up or I'll throw him out myself. A lot of people in in the audience applauded, which was a tad embarassing. But kinda cool.

Why do teenager boys think talking loudly and annoying others is cool?

A friend of mine was once in a theatre where a couple decided to hold a conversation. He politely asked a couple of times if they could be quiet so he could enjoy the movie and they ignored him. So he spat on them. They hurriedly got up and left.
Don't know if I'd recommend this course of action though.

I find that my worst experience were a group of small down 3 rows in front of me and my friends. It was them, us, and a few other teens. They were chatting during the movie, unsupervised by an adult. Eventually they got so annoying that me and my friends did, in unison, a loud "Shut the fuck up!"

In terms of theatre quality, I usually go to the theatre by Fenway Park in Boston, MA. Sometimes I go to a franchise theatre out in the middle of Cambridge. Best quality, by far, though is the Loews at Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass. It's small and gets a good crowd. I go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show there every once in a while, and it's great. Good general crowds there, mostly fellow teens and students who aren't noisy.

I find that generally theater behavior is worse in the AMC type "stadium seating" cinemas. I usually go down to the Grand Lake in Oakland, because it's an awesome old theater that was built in the '20's, and it's simply beautiful (plus, it has an organ!), but when I can't go there, I go to Emeryville or Jack London Square (which is a crappy theater).

People who let their f*&#ing little brats talk and make noise through the movie!

This has happened at most of the movies I've seen recently - Matrix Revolutions, Terminator III, Hulk...and all of these are M (15+) movies...

You yell at the dickhead parents to shut the kids up and they just give you a gormless, sheepish smile and do nothing!

If I was going to see a kids movie in the middle of the day, I'd expect it, but not at a freakin M rated movies in the night time.

1) People kicking the back of your seat

2) Someone taller sitting right in front of you

3) Children under the age of 8 just being in the cinema, I took my little sister to see the last Harry Potter film and some snotty nose whiner of a3 year old was constantly crying, talking and playing with my hair, of course mummy and daddy just thought it was cute(=reason I never want kids)

4) T his wasn't horrible but very funny, one of my guy friends who I used to have a thing with for a few years was sitting behind me in the cinema cos we couldn't all couldn't get seats together, an ad for the second LOR came on and instead of just going ya look and putting his arms around my neck...he ended up putting both hands on my tits!!! I've never laughed so much in a cinema!!
