i'm gonna take that as a million pounds, not just dollars (fictional 1:1 exchange rate, see?)
pay off parents & my debts, buy a few nice things (new PC, awesome broadband connection, cds, dvds, the usual), get a modest & quality house somewhere and save/invest the rest. then enjoy my time doing SFA and writing...
after its built up a bit again from interest/dividents i'd start giving charity.

pretty standard, really.

What would you do with the million Dollars?
Pay off all my debts, buy a new car, buy land in this area of NC, set up a trust fund for my grandchildren's education, and use the rest to set up a fund for homeless and destitute US veterans. :)

Invest it and donate 50-75% of the yearly profit to charity. I might buy a new guitar first, though.

I'd spend a good chunk of it buying all the stuff I wanted but could never afford. The rest would go in the bank to collect interest.

I'll take one million pounds, instead of dollars.

But, I would spend a part of it on things that I really want, like a new guitar, a new computer, some new clothes heh ..

Work through my college and then into university, as I could pay my way without the debts.

Then get a nice small house, in a nice suburb outside of London or maybe in the country, invest a bit more of it, put a bit into a good ol' account.

Maybe get a nice car :p

Then spend my days taking Pictures and writing books.

That would be sweet ..

i would put the entire sum into an investment that would pay me out at least $50,000/year for the rest of my life. yes i can live on that, no problem. then i would make a will leaving half of the "nest egg" to my son and the rest equally to my neices and nephews.

Some annuities earn at least 8% per year, and they can never be cancelled.

I'd skip school the coming year (not needing the scholarship to go by), and stay with my girlfriend untill Christmas, rather than just in July (which is the current plan). By then she'd probably have the paperwork in order, and both of us could go back to Norway. Then I'd live life mostly as I do now (the money in the bank, using it as I need it), except I'd have way more sex.

but an annuity eats up your principle. not a bad thing unless you also wanted money to leave your children.

What would you do with the million Dollars?
1. New drum set! ($10 000)
2. Buy a nice big piece of land in the country. ($20 000?)
3. Build a nice (but not massive, you'll see why in a sec.) house on it. ($200 000)
4. Build a state-of-the-art recording studio on the land away from the house. ($500 000)
5. Invest the rest. (c. $250 000)
6. With the recording studio open, I can start raking in the cash.

If it was a million pounds sterling, i'd change it into euro, buy myself a house near college so i wouldn't have to get up so damn early in the morning, (rent out the rest of the rooms for a bit o' spare cash), invest wisely and live off my investment returns!!

to steal my friends answer:

"If I had a million dollars I would -insert really deep threatening voice here- Kill Everyone..."

really though, I would buy a spot of land near where I live and build a skatepark. any left over money I would use to buy some more boards

I've always said that if I came into a large amount of money I would give 25% to charity, so off that goes, mainly to the charities I'm already involved in.

I would use a small amount to treat myself to some toys--better computer, DVDs, that sort of stuff--but for the rest, I would probably stash half in a bank to make babies, and use the other half to start a small business. What kind of business, though? I do not know.

I've always wanted to make a videogame, but would that be enough to recruit programmers, artists etc. and pay them for 1+ year, selling nothing while they make a professional quality game, managing them all the while given how I have no experience of software or the games industry, get it published and then sack everyone if it turns out not to be a hit and pay back the investment?

An alternate scheme would be a publishing company, to provide an outlet for artists who can't get published through the mainstream companies, but publishing is known as a dire business. The reason why there are only big companies is because 99% of novels are not profitable and they finance the loss of most of their offering with a few high profile best sellers. And to attract writers of best sellers you need to be big in the first place--it's a vicious circle. Of course I could use that mil to attract a best seller or two, but would that leave me enough to pay employees, print, ship, etc?

If I had a band I would use the money to start a label and promote us. Maybe I can just go Jay Z and become a gangsta rapper. Upper-middle class white overweight gangsta rapper 4 lyfe!

It's a catch-22: I want to do something I love for a living, and while being my own boss. Problem is, when you become a business owner you stop doing the work because you have to deal with the rest of what owning a business is, accounting, sales, etc.

I think ultimately I would just fly to Vegas and blow the mil on gambling, booze and hookers.

1. Hire a hit man to assassinate the BareNaked Ladies (who sing "If I had a million dollars")
2. Buy a Maserati
3. Buy a small riverside farm property and turn the barn and silo into a combination art studio/sound studio. The art studio would have a Foundry, Metal Shop, Mouldmakiing Studio, Ceramic Studio, Plastic Studio, Stone Carving Studio and a Woodshop.
4. Hire firends from my days in Sculpture/Installation @ art college to help teach classes in all these varied disciplines and rent out studio time to the students once they'd completed any courses. Also rent out studio time to other artists not affiliated with this venture. I enjoy teaching, so I'd be heavily invovled in this end things...my new day job.
5. Make a private little drawing/painting/whatever studio in a shack in the back 40 of the property
6. Fill the sound studio with carefully selected gear, both digital and analog and keep it for myself and a few friends only.
7. Design the Sound Studio so that it could open to become the stage of a mid-sized performance space, enclosed but able to become open air in nice weather. Rent it out for one-off events...far from noise bylaws and prying eyes of neighbours. Also use proceeds from this to fund the nascent art colony and throw partie where 100% of proceeds would go to charities.
9. TECHNO! LOUD! BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM

Note: I'd need more than one million to outfit all of this, but the million would go a long way towrads it and help buy assets to use as collateral for loans to get the remainder of the money. Funding from Arts Grants would also be a part of the plan. Its impossible to retire to a life of leasure on only a million dollars, might well make a go of it in a business I love

Give 10-15% to church and charities.

-Reduce debts (1 million isn't enough to pay off all my families debts, especially credit cards and those with high interests rates)
-Invest in some properties overseas, get my sis a house and a new car in Melbourne, at least somewhere to run if we go bust
-Buy myself some new work clothes
-A Mercedes C class.
-And the rest model for a new business.

What would you do with the million Dollars?

Other than paying off your house, what the hell is 1 million going to do?

There are tons of millionaires in the US and the Globe. In the US, 1 million isnt really a life changing sum. Sure, 1 million cash is nice, but really, it doesnt go as far as it did 30 years ago.

So true:

3. come home and go back to work, priceless.

Ask me again a few days and the answer I am sure will change...

Investing it in an apartment complex would do wonders. However, I don't know if you can get a very sizeable one for $1,000,000. Probably a four-unit two-story.

Still, the income from the rent would be great.

Bank it, work until it comes up to a million £ then, following an early retirement, live a simple life based around computer games and dope. A small, mean nirvana, but nevertheless one with a particular frisson of righteous ascetiscism. Environmentally friendly too, as I would need, nor bother with, a car.
