I want to take my labtop with me this weekend and do some "work" on the internet. I tried this once before at a motel that had a wireless connection, but I couldn't make it work. I pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff. Can anyone give me clear step by step directions? All replys will be most welcome.

Does your laptop have a wireless card installed? (i.e. AirPort)

If so, you can connect effortlessly.

If not, you need to install one. Go to your local computer repair shop and have them install a wireless card.

Here's a way to set-up a wireless connection .
Here are what you'll need to do so :
1)The motel's network name , also known as SSID
2)The motel's WEP key , also known as Network Key
3)Most importantly , a laptop that can connect to a wireless network .
4)I am predicting that you have a wireless connection already (not to the motel's , but any other place .

Here's how you do it : (win xp)
1)Click on start , control panel , Network and Internet Connections , Network Connections , right click and click on properties and then click on wireless networks button on the tab .
2)You should see a "add" button . Click on it .
3)Enter the Network ID / SSID
4)Uncheck the "the key is provided for me" checkbox .
5)Enter the Network Key / WEP key .
6)Press the "Ok'' button .
7)You should be able to connect to the internet throught the motel's wireless connection now .

Hope this works ,
Please inform me if it doesnt .

A "reputable" hotel usually has directions for you.

You running a firewall? You might have to program a couple things.

Also, it depends on the type of wireless card you have and the type of setup they have. For example, they could be running Cisco and using the LEAP protocol. I doubt they are but this is just an example of what could go wrong.

XP with SP2 has the firewall automattically installed. It's pretty crappy so you could turn it off.

However, I would invest in a firewall. Software at the least. Look at zonealarms......

I have Norton with a firewall. I am hoping to go to Starbucks or some place like that to use the puter a couple of times this weekend. I will be staying at my mother's. She does not have a connection.

Another case of me showing my age: I see a thread title called 'Help with wireless?' and think of cat's whiskers and foxhole radios.

She does not have a connection. You need to register and pay for a connection at Starbucks. Best stick to sitting on the street somewhere near someone who has an internet connection. I do it all the time.

You might want to read this (http://www.tampabays10.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=13482) then, they're beginning to charge people with a crime for doing that. It's called theft.
