The Numbers from Lost

The numbers from the hit ABC series Lost are as follows:
4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

What do they mean? Are they "cursed"? What do they mean to you?

8-the show starts at 8:00! (7 CST)

42-There was another thread about the number 42 in this forum. Apparently, "42 is the answer to life, the universe, everything!" Are they related?

Here are some links:

http://www.d.kth.se/~dicander/lost.html
http://athensohio.net/entertainment/4-8-15-16-23-42/
http://lost.cubit.net/phenomena.php

I always believed that the numbers might be coordinates-possibly to the island? Now, reading through some of this, there seems to be a connection with the number 666. A lot of people believe that the island is purgatory. Is this a hint?

Edit: I'm such an idiot. I just realize that the show AIRS at 8! Duh!

I knew that. But do you think that the numbers are truly cursed or it's his psychological demeanor that has caused "bad luck"?

I would assume that the numbers are just bad luck, since other people had had bad luck with the numbers also.

This is off-topic, but does anyone else thing that the French lady isn't crazy? She said she heard the others say they were going to "take the boy", and they did. They stole that 10 or 11 year old kid, Walt or whatever his name is. So they weren't talking about the baby.

I think the French woman is sane, Syide (wrong spelling, maybe wrong name, I mean the Middle Eastern soldier guy) heard the voices too...

Actually, I don't think those were the "others". I think those were people who want to exploit Walt's psychic power. I think the "others" are either nonexistant or ghosts or or aliens or something like that.

I don't think she's nessecarily crazy, just a little, you know, confused. I think she mixes some stuff up. I can't believe that the junkie left her alone with the Australian chick, though. How stupid could he be?

And why do people keep falling asleep all at once? They should always have a guard shift.

Yeah, but we must remember that Sayiid (sp?) had heard the story the French woman had told, and don't all of them know it by now? It could all be in their heads.

I still think the "others" are ghosts or something like that.

Who said Walt had psychic powers? I must have missed an episode.

The bonfire apparently made by the others was by the ocean, and those people were in a boat. Also, the ocean could have washed away any tracks.

yeah, Sawyer did her them once, and I think the people that took Walts might have been there by coincidence, and not there for his powers. Maybe they were slave traders or something...

Well, Walt had a comic book with the polar bear which has appeared on the island TWICE. I think he used psychic powers to make it come to life. I think he also did the same thing with, like, a bird or something, right? I think Locke knows, too. I don't know why he hasn't taught Walt how to channel his powers yet.

when they were showing the flashbacks of his father, the guy that was Walts' guardian said 'weird things' always happen around him, then i showed a bird flew into the door and died right near Walts.

the french woman is both right and crazy, 16years alone on an island makes you nutz

other people have had bad luck with numbers? the fat guy has had disaster after disaster since he won that money.

locke cant teach the boy anything since his father wont let them be alone together. (or didnt before locke saved them from the monster)

the island is so weird by itself that it doesnt need walt to do anything special even if his stepdad was afraid of him. but that polar bear thing is right out of that comic book eh? the big monster on the island isnt the polar bear so why does the bear keep appearing?

and how are they gonna swim 15 miles back to the island?

You used the numbers 15 and 16 in your post, did you notice?

I think Walt's powers are activated by powerful negative emotions. I also think Locke could have taught him how to control his powers, but didn't.

I used the Gematriculator (http://homokaasu.org/gematriculator/) to calculate how evil the numbers were. To do this, I simply spelled them out, as the Gematriculator doesn't like all-numeric text samples. Here were the results:

1% evil, 99% good

Points of interest
Amount of letters-42 (42=7x6)
Amount of consonant-25 (2+5=7)
Amount of different words beginning with consonant-7 (7=7)
Amount of words beginning with consonant-7 (7=7)

Important words
Value of word "two"-760 (7+6+0=13)
Value of word "three"-308 (308=7x44)
Value of word "eight"-229 (2+2+9=13)

So, In there are a total of 42 letters (not characters) in the sequence when the numbers are spelt out. COOL! *Geeks out*

Another phenomenon with the numbers:

The words four, eight, and fifteen have a total of 16 letters.

Four: 4
Eight: 5
Fifteen: 7
4+5=9.
9+7=16.

The words four, eight, fifteen, and sixteen have a total of 23 letters.

Four: 4
Eight: 5
Fifteen: 7
Sixteen: 7
4+5=9, 7+7=14.
9+14=23.

The words four, eight, fifteen, and sixteen, twenty-three, and forty-two all have a total of 42 letters.

Four: 4
Eight: 5
Fifteen: 7
Sixteen: 7
Twenty-three: 11
Forty-two: 8
4+5=9, 7+7=14, 11+8=19.
9+14=23.
23+19=42.

Also: Four has 4 letters. (It also happens to be the only number to have the same number of letters as the number it represents.)
Forty-two has 8 letters.
15 is represented by the number of letters the numbers have in that four and twenty-three have a total of 15 letters, as do forty-two and fifteen or forty-two and sixteen.

So, all the numbers are represented in some way when the number of letters they have is spelt out. Is this a little far fetched? Maybe, but interesting, and it does show a connection between them all.

Yeah. It was after he ran and almost missed the plane. He made it on, sat down, buckled in and pulled ou the same comic. I only recongized it because of the page folded under was that of the polar bear.

Maybe a code to some dark secret of the island. Did anyone find the finale surprising? Obviously escape from the island will be imposible as to keep the show going so the only question was HOW the raft would be stopped. It was quite effective. So what is the island? A secret government site? The "others" did have a boat suggesting that they're not trapped on the island. I suppose we'll have to wait until next season since it seems certain the show will come back for season 2.

Or the raft could take ages to get back to the mainland and even longer for people to find them, AND that it's a secret government lab. *nods*

I think the island is one of the following:
(1) A military experimental facility (they do call the monster a "security system".)
(2) Hell/purgatory
(3) Some sort of magical/supernatural superpowerful geographical point that all magical/supernatural things are drawn to-like the Hellmouth in BtVS/Angel.
(4) Some sort of scientific experiment like Jurassic Park

Maybe the men will get on the raft, all except one, and they will get eaten by sharks. Then the man who stayed on the island will make himself king and abuse the women. They will get tired of him and kill him. A few hours later they are rescued by the USS Yorktown.

Oh, wait, that's a real life story. Nevermind.

I was kind of hoping for supernatural. Something like a non-natural storm coming up to sink the raft, or a tsunami. However the "security system" you mentioned is some strange animal that could be some genetic manipulation or a machine like those from Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I'm sure the writers will be creative and origonal.

Well, it did make mechanical sounds last ep. Its appearance was that of a black cloud/smoke. Could it be related to the "others"?
Personally, I think it's some sort of military/scientific experiment.
