Auto Insurance Question

Ok, perhaps, somebody who knows far more about insurance than myself can answer this for me. I've searched and searched, but I can't find a straight answer.
I'm 20 years old, and I'm an unlicensed driver. I do not have a permit at the moment, and I live in Pennsylvania. However, I will be purchasing a car from my parents within the next six weeks, and the title will be put in my name. They will relinquish all rights to the car over to me.
Now, I know I can't put the insurance in my name if I'm unlicensed. I've already been told that by the insurance companies, however, what I can't find out is whether or not my girlfriend can get the insurance for my car in her name. Basically, can a person who doesn't own a car get insurance for that car?
My name will be on the insurance, just as an unlicensed driver and eventually that'll change, but for now, I can't find out whether or not I can even get insurance for my car... and I need to know soon so I can plan the insurance rates, etc.

Check with your state DMV. I know that in NJ only the owner of the vehicle can insure it.

Oooh, I didn't even think about calling the DMV! Thanks for the tip!

That's what I'm here for. To provide a bad example for the rest to avoid.

Crap. If I understood what I read on the PA DMV page, I have to have my license first. Damn it. That's just not going to happen.

no someone else cant insure your car. your parents can keep you on their insurance if they dont sign it over to you. otherwise you have to wait until you have your own license.

Yeah, that's not an option, unfortunately. Arg. I don't have time to get my license. I figured I could buy the car, have my girlfriend insure it, then, she could teach me how to drive when I had the time. Oh, well, now I'll just have to call a company and schedule lessons somehow.
Thanks for the help everybody! :)

Then have patience. If you don't have a license why have a car in your name. Best wait until you get it.

The problem is (long story short), my parents need to sell the car as they're strapped for cash. They're moving to a small place and just large a sizable amount of income for the year. I'm getting a great deal on a practically brand new car, with about 4000 miles on it, for four grand. My dad paid 22 grand for it... and I don't know if I'm still going to be able to buy it if I can't do it within the next six weeks. They may need to sell it before then to somebody else for the money.

if you can trust your parents (and i know that for some people its a big IF) then you can pay them NOW and take title and posession later.
do you have a time you have to wait before theywill let you take a driving test or other requirements to be met? you can learn all you need to learn to pass the test in a weekend or so. it just takes practice eh?

I can definitely trust my parents; they just can't afford to have me show up on their insurance if I drive the car, even if it's still in their name.

Yeah, I can basically drive a car, but I've had very little practice on the road. I'm sure I can get my license in like a week, if somebody I knew would let me take the test in their car, etc. My parents suggested paying for lessons, which I can pay for no problem, it's just finding the time to do it.
I can basically go in, get my permit, then, take the test the next day, because I am over 18 in PA.

If you want to pay to have it shipped to wherever you're at, I'll talk to my parents about it if they decide they can't wait that long. lol.

NO. Get your license. You have to have a license # because they background check your driving record. I used to be a property/casualty agent. No license, no car. If you're in the U.S.

You dont need insurance, or a license or anything to BUY a car. You only need these things of you intend to operate it on public roads. You parents can come by your place and park it on your private property and you wont need to do a thing except pay your parents.

Or conversely, if she trusts her girlfriend, she can transfer ownership of the car to her girlfriend for $1. That way the deed will be in her name, she can get it insured, teach you to drive, and then when you are licensed, she can transfer ownership back to you for $1, and you can insure it yourself. It's slightly complicated, but it'll achieve what you're looking for.

But she wants to have it insured so her girlfriend can teach her how to drive in it (as opposed to paying for a driving school). There's no way the insurance company will insure an unlicensed driver.

Yeah, Sdaeriji is right, that was my plan. I just didn't know better, because I've never done this before. My parents are going to "sell" the car to me for $10 for tax purposes, even though I'm paying them $4000 for it, lol.
See, I learned something new today, though, which is good! My parents didn't know this either, so, we all learned something new.
