Prophecy?

What are your thoughts on things like the Bible Code, Nostradamus (sp?), and crazy African witch-doctor types?
Some seem quite convincing, others not so. Some are rather scary.

Quick note:
This topic is not for the discussion of the truth of your religion, or the un-truth of another. Comments like, "The Bible Code is wrong because Christianity is stupid!" arent welcome unless they are phrased in a form that invites debate.
Thank you.

The thing about the Bible Code is, it's pretty much useless when it comes to predicting things, because you can't know that the code predicted it until after it happens so you know what to look for...

Yes, but so are all the other books of prophecy. At least the Bible Code is specific about things, Nostradamus apparently spent alot of his time around boiling mercury and wrote things down because they seemed funny at the time. :p

In my humble opinion it is quotes like this that generate the most debate on NS. Actually, this is too mild to generate much debate.

The Bible Code has been proven to be pure bullshit, as 7/11 and various assassination predictions were also found in rap song lyrics when they had been translated and put into the grid. I cant believe someone actually made money from that, he's absolutely rolling in it because he tried an over-the-top crossword.

When the physical embodiments of Heaven and Hell collide on earth, then i'll start believing. Until then, i'm looking for a really religous forum with no membership costs...

EDIT: oh would you look at that! someone on my computer has signed up for WhiteRevolution! hehehehehehehehehehehehehe.... gotta see how many times i get the word f*cktard onto that hive of c*nts before i get banned. TAKING ALL BETS NOW!!!

5-10 times: 3:1
10-20 times: 3:1
20-30 times: 2:1
40-50 times: 2:1
50+ times: if i manage this then you lot pay me!

This is my thought on prophecy: "I do not think that word means what you think it means." Prophecy is not fortune-telling, predicting the future, nor done to "fool" or "trick" people. Prophecy is a means of fulfilling an end (outcome). It is more akin to long-term planning, but with an important exception: long-term planning determines an outcome by directing people towards that outcome (fate), whereas prophecy determines a destiny by specifying an outcome. Destiny cannot be dictated. It is up to an individual person (or group) to decide if the destiny is theirs to fulfill.

I never believe in prophecies unless they actually happen and I see it.

You sure nailed that one. Hats off to you.

I would prefer you believe it only when you are it. ;)

That they seem scary is A Good Thing. It means you are open to more than a literal translation of life, the universe, and everything that goes on around you.

You do not have to fear:

1. Anything that proposes to come into you (your body, your mind, or your soul) through magical means (in the common sense of happening "supernaturally", hocus-pocus, twitch your nose sort of stuff). Not gonna happen, unless someone psyches you out. Magic comes from you, not into you.

2. Anything that proposes to know a set future. The future has not happened yet, and is not fixed in place.

3. Anything that proposes to be prophecy or fortune-telling that suggests a future of doom and gloom. This is not a valid outcome for any practice of divination.

prophecy is like LUCK, it only works looking backwards, its useless for predicting the future.
