Does anyone know what exactly the EU's constitutional debates are about? What are the objections?

what it is: a consolidation of existing EU treaties and agreements into a single coherent document, with a bit more on the charter of human rights. no real changes in legality, but maybe a couple of changes to the structure of the EU (i'm not sure). reduction in bureaucracy and confusion surrounding EU law

objections: 1st step towards Federal "EU Superstate"

...which i think is a good thing

Did you guys hear about the agreement France was making with Germany to make part of Strasbourg (Straßborg) a Eurodistrict (Eurodistrikt), or neutural city, combining parts of Strasbourg proper and Rhineland-Westphalia (Or whatever German state it was). Is this the first step to European Washington D.C.?

as in part of EU territory, not national members' territory?

Does this mean we are one step closer to a unified world? That insists on a level of human rights for all people, like education for all people. Is it possible?

It isn't really a step to a unified World. More towards a unified Europe that will probably fuck about with the rest of the world with insane tariffs and the good old Variable Import Levy, and don't forget dumping produce at cost in other countries which destroys markets in developing countries. But, I'm rambling.

All it means is that Europe is getting closer to being like the US, with countries like the UK and Germany just becoming 'states' within the European Union version of a country. It will do bugger all for poorer nations (and I really mean poor nations, not just the transition economies) because there is no way in hell that the EU will expand to allow weaker economies in. Not in the near future, anyway.

As far as i can tell the E.U constitution is mostly a tidying up excercise, but there are other parts that i dont really like, for instance the creation of an E.U foreign minister and a single E.U foreign policy.

Just remembered something that is quite interesting, rumour has it that Chiraq is going to ignore the results of the French referendum if it doesnt go the way he wants.

Let your vision be world embracing. There will be setbacks, difficulties, troubles ahead. But nothing can stop the need for a unified approach to the problems of the world. Who would have dreamed three hundred years ago that this was ever possible?

If there is indeed a planned "Eurodistrict", and I haven't heard anything about it, then it will likely be for France and Germany, which many expect will begin to integrate faster than the rest of the EU.

Commentators expect that, when Britain and France and the Netherlands reject the Constitution, there will be new proposals, and likely a two-speed EU, with Germany, France and perhaps some others going faster towards a single country, and the UK and Baltic and Eastern European countries staying outside this as part of a simple free-trade EU.

There will not be a European superstate any time soon, at least not one with all the present countries in it.

I don't want a superstate, and it is my impression that many people share my view.

Chirac may be planning to "ask again", as it were, but that will become more unlikely when the Dutch and British reject the constitution.

I'd just like to add, that certainly in the UK, the concept of an EU superstate is one that scares a large part of the population, and the idea that the purpose of the EU is to create one is not something that most people agree with. Although I'd like to see a move to a more unified Europe, I don't beleive the countries within Europe will ever be just 'States'.

Also, on the issue of helping the needy, though the EU may do little to help countries outside Europe, less well-off Eastern-European countries certainly benifit hugely from their membership.

The EEC started out as a purely ecomonic block and is now trying to give itself more of a common ideology than purely money. Theres no doubt that is has done some good in West Europe in the past half century, but the usual Conservative arguments of declining nationalism and sovereignty are tiring. Who cares anymore? The world is steadily being homogenised through globalisation- nationalism is quickly becoming irrelevant.

An Emperor far away is much more comforting than an Emperor close by- ;)
