What's Your Favorite Music Genre?

I would have made a poll, but there are WAY too many musical genres out there.

As you can tell by my name (GodForbid). I LOVE Metal. Bands like Lamb of God, Chimaira, Unearth, In Flames, Otep, Slipknot, God Forbid, HeavenShallBurn, and many others in the Underground.

Hm, I wonder who made anyone the authority on what "real" metal is. Heh.

Anyway, I'd say Grunge/Stoner Rock. Bands like Kyuss, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, Queens of the Stone Age, Mudhoney, the Melvins, etc. etc.

But I like Old-school punk and a fair bit of blues-rock too, eg. Dead Kennedys and Led Zeppelin.

I don't know any of those bands except Slipknot, who I don't really like. Some of it is bearable though (except live. they are the most terrible live band I had the misfortune to see.)

Meh. I still don't think anyone can be an authority on it. Hm. Well, how's this for controversy then? Anything after Sabbath and Maiden isn't real metal. :p

Ooh, that's inviting controversy, Kanabia. Then again, I don't really care for metal either. And I dislike Slipknot, because they have, what, 9 members? And they still don't sound half as good as the White Stripes (2 members).

Wow... I feel old. I was reading a writeup on a band, and realized they were in grade-school when I was in Saudi for my second six-months in the desert.

I don't really go for "Genre", at least, not as much as I did when I was eighteen and listening to Mercyful Fate, Diamondhead, Hawkwind, and Iron Maiden.

Current 'In the Car" selections are from Danzig III on audiotape. Overall, I'm still a heavy-metal listener by preference, but I have higher standards now, and I occasionally can't resist breaking stereotype by listening to Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy".

Then again, I also have a weakness for "Filk" (those who know what it is, know what I'm talking about. Those that don't...well... sorry. You're missing a fine treat.)

Now, if someone (anyone) can explain to me why imitation-punkers like Green Day are popular, I would appreciate it. I've heard their stuff on the radio, and I have to say that I've heard better from Highschool Garage-bands in the "Raw" (no Editing, old and/or worn out gear).

I usually like things under the genre of rock. I'm not too good at classifying music into more specific genres, so that's the most I can say.

The White Stripes are decent recorded (though I prefer their earlier stuff), but I hear that they aren't much good live.

Well, many people would think that the White Stripes would suck live (understandable, with 2 members and all), but since I can't say a bad thing about them, and I have their DVD where they play a gig in Blackpool, I'd say they're quite good live (but a DVD ain't the real thing).

I'm getting Get Behind Me Satan (5th Album) and The White Stripes (Debut) both in a couple of weeks. My collection will be complete!

Rock...of all kinds ranging from classic to Metal...

Nine Inch Nails would be my fav...but I'm currently really into Blind Guardian, Mudvayne and In Flames at the moment.

While I like System of a Down, their latest CD really disappointed me.

I like old-school stuff like Led Zep, The Who, The Doors, Pink Floyd...

I'm not sure what my prefered genre is. On my rare forays into HMV, all the music I like is in the "Rock and Pop" section. This is far too vague for me. None of my favorite acts are pop (mainly because I hate pop music. Except from Kylie, but I don't listen to her singing... ;) ), and rock doesn't seem to fit i.e my favorite group, R.E.M, aren't quite rock as we know it.

I like:
R.E.M
Phil Collins
U2
and so on. What would you say my genre was?

http://blog.puinha.net/_imgpost/band_pantera.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantera

The first commercially successful album Pantera recorded was 1990's Cowboys From Hell. At this point, Pantera's music was still heavily influenced by "classic heavy metal" — with Rob Halford-style vocals and the extravagant riffs and solos of guitarist Dimebag Darrell, though the album also showcased a more extreme style.

Pantera's breakthrough album was 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, which saw the replacement of falsetto vocals with a more shouted delivery and a heavier guitar sound. The extent to which this album grew in popularity can be assessed by the instant success of the 1994 follow-up, Far Beyond Driven which debuted at number one in both American and Australian album charts, the first metal album ever to achieve this, despite the failing fortunes of metal in America at that time. In this release, Pantera took an even more extreme direction. Pantera's next album The Great Southern Trendkill, was released in 1996 during the height of grunge rock. This album saw moderate success for the time at which it was released. Pantera's final album was Reinventing The Steel.

If any one genre encompasses Tom Waits, Dread Zepplin, Warren Zevon, Tonio K, and Bonzo Dog Band, thats mine.

That being said, all music is good if you like it and bad if you don't.

You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40.
If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Indie can refer to anything not on a major label...it's a characteristic of a band, not a genre, as in a sound-style.

Because people seem to think it's a genre, it's also used to describe bands like Franz Ferdinand. Go figure.

I have worked in a music store for sometime now. Not a shitty backstreet cassette store, we're talking major major chain. The store takes up two floors. I have a friend who works at a rival store, and another freind who is a DJ.

I have never, EVER unpacked, stocked or sold any CD with the name Pantera on it. My friend ran a check on his store's computer and they have never recieved anything from one "Pantera". The DJ has been in the buisness for 20 years now, and has no idea who the hell Pantera is.

Holy shit Pantera must be a great group.

The Weapon They Fear
Words - these words of freedom
A bequest - never to be silenced

In this world of lies, the truth, it means resistance
To make the masses see and sense their needs

He healed so many aching hearts and wounds
And threw back the baseness - back to where it came from

Aspired from the middle of his brothers
Charged this suffering and oppression
One single voice became a storm
His words and melodies - the weapon they fear

Throw back the baseness - back from where it came

Nobody is chosen to suffer
Nobody is destined to rule
Gagged his mouth but not his songs, the songs we sing
Fettered his hands but not the words he wrote
These songs we'll sing!

"Silence and screams are the end of my song." - Victor Jara

Lamb of God

Now You've Got Something to Die For
Now you've got something to die for.
Infidel, Imperial
Lust for blood, a blind crusade
Apocalyptic, we count the days.
Bombs to set the people free, blood to feed the dollar tree
Flags for coffins on the screen, oil for the machine
Army of the liberation, gunpoint indoctination
The fires of sedition
Fulfill the prophecy.
Now you've got something to die for.
Send the children to the fire, sons and daughters stack the pyre
Stoke the flame of the empire, live to lie another day
Face of hypocrisy, raping democracy
Apocalyptic, we count the days.
We'll never get out of this hole until we've dug our own grave
And drug the rest down with us, the burning home of the brave
Burn.
Now you've got something to die for.

Hourglass
Privileged, a chosen few
Blessed with our time in hell
Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still.
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass
Wrath of the warring gods and so this too shall pass.
It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret
Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade
What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake?
An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns
Forbearance and my vengeance, payment for you intent
Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace.
God forbid you read the signs, watch for meanings between the lines
Gehenna has now arrived, no hindsight for the blind.
Your trust ahs been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face
Became another casualty and now it's too late.
You finall made it home, draped in the flag that you fell for.
And so it goes
The a shes of the wake.
It's only getting worse...

Omerta
Broken the paradigm an example must be set
Invoke the Siren's song and sign the death warrant.
This what has been wrought for 30 pieces if silver
The tongues of men and angels bought by a beloved betrayer.
I am the result what's better left unspoken
Violence begins to mend what was broken
You've been talking, I've been all ears.
Words meant to dwell in darkness shall never see the light of day
Words can be broken, so can bones
Execute the mandate
Mouth full of dirt.
Your name removed from the registry
St. Peter greets with empty eyes then turns and locks the gate.
I am the result what's better left unspoken
Violence begins to mend what was broken
You've been talking, I've been all ears
Omerta.
Cheaply venal, stupidly verbose
A slip of the tongue, a slit of the throat
Six feet under with no marker
Keep my name from your mouth forever.
Free speech for the living, dead men tell no tales
Your laug hing finger will never point again.
Omerta.
Sing for me now.

As the Palaces Burn
The fiends have gagged a generation of pacified fools
Bound by our greed a nation enslaved as corporate tools.
Arise and raze the legacy of their lies
To realize that this in itself is an ascension
Towards the day we revolt.
As the seeds you've cast away take hold
War will be born.
Rejoice, the age of the fall has begun
We'll dance as the palaces burn.
A shot gun blast into the face of deceit
You'll gain your just reward.
We'll not rest until the purge is complete
You will reap what you've sown.
My redemption lies in your demise.
In such a world as this does one dare to think for himself?
The paradox of power and peace will destroy itself
To know the truth and live in fear of no man.
To realize that this in itself is an ascension
Toward the day we revolt.
As the seeds you've cast away take hold
War will be born.
Rejoice, the age of the fall has begun
We'll dance as the palaces burn.
My redemption lies in your demise.
Rejoice, the age of the fall has begun.
We'll dance as the palaces burn.

Vigil
Our father thy will be done.
I have denied this life its worth
I will not be the victim.
Sickness to you my master
Here's to getting worse
Hope it kills you faster.
Show me how it hurts to rot from the inside out.
This vigil burns
Until the day our fires overtake you.
Our father we forsake you.
Blessed be his name
Nothing now the same.
Ask me why I hate
Why I've prayed to see the nation that I loved disintegrate
And gladly give my life
That revolution regenerates.
In honor of the strife of those who've died
In generations before for your blood stained glory
I reject your
I deny your
I defy you to continue.
Smite the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.

This ^^^ look uneducated to you?

I would have to say my favorites are bluegrass and roots style folk and some of the less hip hoppedy poppedy country. Then some good olde tyme blues.
Some of the newer bluegrass instrumentals like Chris Thile are pretty good too. I used to listen to all of the angry music (Pantera, Metallica etc..)when I was a kid but I have outgrown it. I like my music to be pleasant and fun and most importantly in the background. Ususlly of a conversation with my wife or friends. When I'm alone I'll still jam out every once in a while to Led Zepplin or the Beatles but most of the time its got to be bluegrass.

Oh and I forgot to mention G Love and special sauce, yeah thats right I said it. Dosent quite go along with my other picks but there is a fun funky energy in their music that can get you hooked. I heard them live at a concert in charlotte @ the visualite. I had a blast and became a fan. The guy plays the harminica hands free with some sort of brace holding the harmonica while playing the guitar with his hands. They have an awesome drummer and the some coolest sounding bass lines around. They dont really have a genre...

i suppose anything really heavy and aggressive, but in there, there is a great rangs

i love the deftones, first and foremost, and Chino's new thing, Team Sleep is really fu**ing awesome too.

From the death metal category, im really into Nile and Behemoth
from this new "metalcore"/new wave of american heavy metal i like Lamb of God, Martyr A.D, and some others

other heavy bands that are effin awesome that also define further categorization are Converge (metallic hardcore punk?) Isis (doomy insane freaky slow artistic post hardcore/metal) and freakin, everyone who likes heavy shit, go check out HIGH ON FIRE its kinda like stoner doom thrash metal (everyone says slayer+iron maiden+motorhead but that seems pretty banal and also... MASTODON bleeding fucking buddha on a stick, they are awesome, addictive, chaotic, trippy, beautiful and amazing to see live, also, go check out

the hidden hand, they defy categorization but they are awesome and stony, as best as i can ascertain (saw em with mastodon, so you get the drift)

and aside from metal i dig the pixies, the smiths, and joy division

1) All those bands are metal
lets take a closer look at that...

Bands like Lamb of God,
hardcore
Chimaira,
metalcore
Unearth,
metalcore
In Flames,
whoa, this one is actually Death Metal, go figure ...
Otep,
either metalcore or hardcore, and since it's not on metal-archives.com probably the latter
Slipknot,
yeah, they could be a fairly average death metal band if they didn't have all the crap like scratching and beating on trashcans and shit, but now they're just bad nu-metal
God Forbid,
metalcore
HeavenShallBurn.
metalcore (oh, and it's three words :p )

so yeah, only one of them is real metal .... (and as to who made me an authority on metal ... you don't just get appointed by some doofus as 'an authority', and I don't claim to be the person with absolute knowledge about all that is metal ... but really, come on, with five minutes of reasearch I totally ripped his post to shreds  )

bah
its all in the name :D

besides, real metal is Pantera. everyone knows that ;)

*points to sig* I don't need 'Metal' in my name, my taste in music rocks as it is :D

Back with a vengence. Let me clear something up.

This rant is over.

PS. Slipknot ain't music and if you think it is go back to school and get educated.

Where are you located? Pantera was damned near 'mainstream'-you could buy their albums damned near everywhere out this way.

I listen to all kinds of stuff. Lately, though, I've been listening to a lot of Industrial Rock/Metal (Ministry, old Static-X, Firewerk, Orgy, Rammstein), Futurepop (Covenant, Informatik, Assemblage 23) and Avant Garde Rock (David Bowie, Radiohead).

I also like weird hybrid music... like numetal mixed with Jamaican dancehall reggae (Skindred).

Industrial-Metal Death-Klezmer Polka-Techno. Its all the rage in Buttfook, Wyoming, don't ya know.

Seriously, my fave genre is Electronic Music. I won't limit myself to a specific sub genre. Bleeps and blips, drones, booms, bangs and vocoders, its all good.

I like classic rock (Beatles, Stones, Doors, Eagles, Pink Floyd etc.) and the "singer-songwriter" folk-rock stuff from the '70s (James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Carly Simon etc.). I prefer songs with lyrics that actually mean something; songs whose message is a little more profound than "let's all get drunk and grab some booty".

Genres are false separations.

I liken touting one genre's superiority over others to musical racism. There's shining gems and utter crap in every genre. I am a jazz fan and jazz educator, but that's not all I listen to, nor do I think jazz is better than anything else.

Aside from that, the ridiculous sub-fragmentation of music into niches so small that their devotees could meet in a phone booth to be silly. Silly and a way for those who sell the music to generate more revenue.

In short, it shouldn't be about genres, it should be about music.

I just got the new CD. VERY disappointing. "Chrome" and "Entropy" are the only tracks really worth listening to. You can tell they want to do something else, change their sound, but they don't want to totally lose their fanbase. Their old stuff (Darkangel, Standing, Solitary, Saviour (vox), Fragments) is much, MUCH better than the new CD.

The point i was making was that ShuntCity appears to be claiming that Pantera is a terrible band just because he or his store have never heard of it. i completely respect peoples right to their own opinion about music, i only object to him claiming that they are crap because he hasnt heard any of their music. It seems to me that this is the attitude of a self centered cretin, hence the reply. I mean, i dont like my little brothers taste in music, but that doesnt give me the right to rip on it before i even listen to it. On another note, i can see where you are coming from about not liking them. I have to be in exactly the right mood to listen to them, else it just pisses me off. Normally i'll just put on Tool, Marilyn Manson, Dream Theater or the Cure

Yes, well if you look at the Crow soundtrack i think you will understand what i am getting at.
