I have two.

One is a very serious contender: Ingmar Bergman's "Viskningar och Rop" ("Cries and Whispers") (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069467/).

The other is the very funny Australian "The Adventures of Priscilla - Queen of the Desert" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109045/). It has Guy Pearce (more known as the guy from Memento), Hugo Weaving (agent Smith from "The Matrix") and Terence Stamp (General Zod from Superman II) in drag. What else can you want from a movie, really?

I like "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly".

Yeah, that's one of the movies I never get tired of. It'd be hard to narrow the list down to THE best movie, but this would be one of my picks on a list of several really good movies.

Let's not forget The Godfather.

also, I'm snickering softly at anyone that picks The Matrix as one of the best movies.

Moulin Rouge...
Hey, I'm a theatre buff. I like good costumes and great music. *shrug*

Also...The Last Samurai was pretty good.

Personally, I love the old black and white classics the best.
Especially Jerry Lewis.

It's a 3 way tie with me.

Dude Where's My Car, The Neverending Story, and Dawn of The Dead (1978) are all tied for first with me.
Cannot think of a name

The First Matrix and Dances With Wolves
You should check out a movie called Black Robe.

Pink Pantherism, dig the name-and I know a little something about names....no, wait-the opposite...

This is about as controversal as pancakes, but-

Citizen Kane One of the first films I watched and went, "Oh, it's an artform..." Yes, the lighting comes from German expressionism and is highly theatrical-it's not what it invents so much (though it did introduce deeeeeeeep focus, having special lenses made for the film) but what it brings together. And the non-linear story telling, something that really hasn't been explored much until recently.

Also on the generic film snob checklist-The Bicycle Thief (manipulating audience sympathy/expectation, style of story telling) and actual German expressionist films Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis. M is also pretty good, but I dig the hell out of Peter Lorre, so...

Since I seem to be listing a 'first year film student' text book (though, really-there is a reason they would be in one) Eisenstien is in there to. Just pick.

Look folks, I love the sci fi as much if not more than most people, but as far as movies go there are so many out there that rate so much higher than the matrix or star wars. Why hasn't anyone mentioned one of the all time greatest, if not the greatest, yet? Let's try Casablanca as the best "mainstream" movie ever. If you want something less well known to promote interest, diversity, and perhaps intelligent debate the go for Balthazar Getty's Where the Day Takes You .

On a completely different note, my favourite movie ever still has to be The Princess Bride . Can't get a better story than that, and the quotes are priceless. It's been said before, and I must repeat, that it is my generations Wizard of Oz , and ultimately will be timeless as well.

Read the book, and then tell me what you think of the movie.

Better yet, play Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" in synch with the movie. :D

This is more of a list:

The Usual Suspects
American History X
Apocalypse Now
Suicide Kings
Leon the Professional
Falling Down
The Keep
Dr. Strangelove
Office Space
Being There
Primal Fear

That was a short list.

I have to agree about the Princess Bride, it is hands down my favorite movie too. It may not be the deepest movie, but for pure storytelling it's hard to beat.

Probably my second favorite movie is The Usual Suspects.

Thats a tough one...there are lots of great films out there amongst the tons of garbage. My own picks:

Wages Of Fear
Man Bites Dog
Sky Captain and The World Of Tommorow (mostly because I'm obsessed with Zeppelins and pre-1946 aviation)
8 1/2 - The first film where I clearly could see film as high art
Man With A Movie Camera - Eisentein, if I recall correctly. First film to actually do something with a camera, first film with no script and not of a special occasion or function. You get to watch the director go "Oh my God, the things I can do with THIS!"
Deliverance - "squeal like a pig!"
The Neverending Story

Well my personal favourite is Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away". Storytelling at its finest. However tied with that is perhaps the most underappreciated film in history - Carl Sagan's novel-turned-film "Contact" from 1997 starring the amazing Jodie Foster. That's perhaps one of the most intelligent and mind-blowing films I've ever seen. F*ck Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and any other generic title someone may throw out as being a "thinker", Contact is the investigation of us and our universe and it's utterly enthralling. Other favourites include Dr. Strangelove, 28 Days Later, Intacto, Magnolia, Pulp Fiction, the list goes on...

BTW the cat scene in Boondock Saints is one of the single most ridiculous things I've ever seen. That and the scene with sucking the stripper's... yeah, or the FBI agent dancing around the crime scene... I need to see that film again. It's been a while. And the squealing like a pig from Deliverance is a pretty awesome scene. It makes me laugh each time.

Spirited Away is fantastic. I keep meaning to sculpt some stone figures like the ones on the roadsides in Spirited Away. Everything about that film just effortlessly meshed with my psyche and aethetic sensiblities. I didn't list it because if I hadn't stopped where I did, I'd still be writing the list.

I haven't seen Contact, but I will go out of my way to see it now that you've rated alongside Spirited Away.

I hate to be a kill joy, but the matrix 1, 2 and 3 all suck.

On the other hand, A Beautiful Mind is a brilliant movie, and for comedy, any Monty Python, and any of the 3 Indiana Jones movies for action adventure.

There are so many good films around, but the one I never get bored of seeing is Monty Python's "The Life of Brian". It's got everything-humour; of course; human tragedy, love interest, violence and moral messages-very deep. "You're all individuals" "yes, we are all individuals", reply the multitude, "I'm not" replies one chappie  . And now you can get it on DVD it's great to be able to see what's going on in the background-I see something new every time I watch it.

And you can't go past the comedic genius of the Python films.

Never heard of it. It's a film by Jean-Luc Godard, made in 1967. Let's just say it starts with a couple's trip to the countryside and ends with the apocalypse! In between there is the largest and most bizzare traffic jam ever, hideous car crashes, insane cannibal guerrillas, random death, sex, drama, comedy, tragedy, suspense, a musical cowboy, a magical holy man, two characters from classical literature and a rather odd Napoleonic Revolutionist! :D
