Baseball legend Chico Carrasquel died today in Venezuela. Carrasquel was the first latin player to play in an all-star game and the 1st Venezuelan to play in MLB. Chico was a shortstop on the White Sox from 1950-1955. He was on the team during the "Go Go" era. He and hall of fame second baseman Nellie Fox formed what is possibly the best double play combo in baseball history. Chico was traded to Cleveland when fellow countryman Luis Aparicio came up to the Sox. Chico played until 1959. While Little Louie was undoubtedly a better player, Chico was still great and is still a favorite of Pale Hose fans. Aparicio and Chico became friends despite the fact that Chico lost his spot on the Sox roster to Luis.

I will never forget opening day last year. Another Venezuelan shortstop for the Sox (Ozzie Guillen) was about to have his first home game as a MLB manager. Chico and Luis flew up to Chicago to join Ozzie in throwing out the ceremonial first pitch as the Sox blew out the Royals 12-5 before a sell out crowd.

I will be heading to the Cell on Monday to watch a game where Chico will once again be the subject of the pregame activities. Unfortunately instead of cheering for this great of the past, we will be mourning him as the Sox have announced they will have a tribute for this baseball pioneer.

Chico Carrasquel, rest in peace.

I never saw Chico play live, but I've seen many of his games on ESPN Classic.

Does anyone have any good Chico stories? My Dad was lucky enough to meet him at Soxfest a few years ago. My grandpa and great uncle used to have season tickets when Chico was playing for the Sox in his prime. The seats were along the 3rd base side of Old Comiskey.
