What undomesticated pet would you like?

Uginin

If you could domesticate a virtually harmless wild animal and keep it as a pet, what would it be? Do not worry if it's illegal to own as a pet or not. Remember that some people kept panthers as pets in the 60s in Europe.

I think my choice would probably be a raccoon or a squirrel. They're just so cute and I think if they were domesticated they would make awesome pets.

I mean, who can not just find a raccoon to be adorable! (Well, this is coming from someone who found Swamp Rats to be cute.)

Yeah, this is just a what-if scenario. I'm not suggesting anyone do it, because it may be dangerous. Although I did know someone who had a pet chipmunk, which is illegal. (I wanted one though.)

I've taken care of two small apes (just fed them for few days). Those are pure evil...
I once had a kind of pet magpie (??? a bird). Everytime I went to my homeyard the bird flew there too after a while. Maybe has something to do with the fact that I always had something to eat....just maybe.

A Jaguar. Or perhaps a Cheetah. Actually both.
It'd be cool to put a sign 'Beware of the Cat'. The looks of the faces of the burglars as they sauntered onto the property and come face to face with a Jaguar would be priceless.
I'd even give them a 100m head-start before I let the Cheetah go.

A very large cat, like one of those half-wildcat things, loyal as a dog, intelligent, doesn't mind/likes water, can intimidate local half wild dogs into avoiding him, fairly quiet, and able to cook its own food and take care of itself when we go on trips.

I've adopted orphaned raccoons before, and, though they can be fun and funny, they also grow up to be kinda nasty and destructive as all get out. In a partial "wild animal" vein, I would like to have a Savannah cat...at cross between an American domestic and an African Serval. These little guys get up to 35 pounds and are said to have the personality and loyalty of a dog.

I'd guess he probably fed it burglars. Just 'accidently' leave the window open when he left for work and clean up the blood when he got back home.

Aparently there's more tigers in the US now as 'pets' than there are left in the wild.
Why someone would want a 500lb animal that knows only how to kill as a pet is beyond me.

Though one of these would be cool (the cat that is, not the freaks standing next to it):

That said, I too would like a big cat - bobcat or larger. If I can get the deer population properly thinned out down here (for cat food) a Serval (which you CAN buy as an exotic, unlike a bobcat) would be cool too.

The biggest problems with a Savannah is that to get a good sized one it needs to be an F1. F1 Toms are sterile and in HIGH demand, and F1 Queens are $$$$$$$$ (because breeders don't want to let go of them).
By the time you get to F5 they aren't much larger than regular housecats.

Synik, how did you get that squirrel to start eating out of your hand?

I had to trap all the ones here and carry them off. They were climbing in under the roof and living in the walls of the house. You could hear them in there chewing away.

I would have a skunk or a raccoon. When I was in high school I had a friend that had a pet skunk. There was one guy that the skunk didn't like and everytime that he walked in the door the skunk tried to spray him. His scent glands had been removed so it was no big deal but it was funny.

Yeah, I was basically thinking Savannah-like, with a few minor alterations (like no abysinian crosses-those cats never shut up. Maybe a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest cross.).

Then I thought of what else would need to be changed for owning one to be practical in our present situation. Cats eat rice here (among other things), so if we went on a trip, it'd be nice if he could whip up something for himself in the kitchen. Wishful thinking, I know, but....isn't that what this thread is for?

"Right turn, Clyde." A friend of mine loves that moment.

While I agree a Cheetah and a big ass yard for him to run in would kick ass, I'm going to have to go with Otter.

I think it would be kick ass to have a few otters, with a pool in the back with a large rock slope/waterslide/fall that feeds into it for them to slide down on. Underneath it would be seeded with muscles(wrong spelling, huh?) and the like that they could pull off and eat. Man, that'd be great.

Chipmunk: anybody know about their pet potential...they're impossibly cute, and as a kid I used to spend hours in a park by my house, feeding them...they'd run up onyo my shoulders, down my arm and eat from hand.

Squrriel: I love squirrels, I think I was one in a previous life. They CAN'T be housebroken, unfortunately. I rescued 2 baby squirrels orphaned when their mom got hit by a car. They were quite a handful. I ended up giving them to an animal shelter, something I still regret.

Sparrow or Chickadee: I'm a bird person (as opposed to dog or cat) I think a pet Sparrow would be awesome

Polar Bear: Big, beautiful, capable of taking down a tiger and eating it for breakfeast, a bad attitude a mile wide. Now thats my kind of predator. He could double as a sofa too. Only problem is I'd have to turn my basement into a huge walk in freezer during the summer...wait thats NOT a problem.

I already have an undomesticated animal for a pet (ie. a snake- some animals can't really be domesticated, though you can keep them as pets anyway)

but to answer the question um... a tiger would be great, so would an owl. I like wolves too, but domesticating one would ruin what I think is cool about them in the first place.

If practicality were not an issue I'd get a much bigger snake, maybe a Reticulated Python.

Realistic: A skunk no doubt. They're totally awesome. But technically they've been domesticated the ones that are available in pet stores are the ones that furriers didn't think would make good garments. All personality, they can live more than 20 years, and some can walk on their hands. Teach it to retrieve a frisbee and summer is covered.

Exotic: A cheetah. That pharaohs kept them as pets isn't an coincidence and it wasn't all about looks.

No really, it was called that. An extinct massive flesh-eating bird from Oz. 7 feet tall and over 500 pounds.
Also the coolest name for any animal, anywhere.
