Just a simple question - I promise it hasn't anything to do with politics:

Why do the republicans use a elephant as a logo and why do the democrats use a donkey as their logo?

Elephants never forget (nice irony)

Donkeys are stubborn irritating buggers.

Sheer stupidity!

I don't honestly know...and I really don't care.

They should both have more kick-ass "mascots"...what good is a political party without a fearsome creature to front it? :p

As I understand it, some political cartoonist from the late 1800s came up with the idea, and drew the parties as those characters. The idea stuck, and voila!

I think that back in the day someone came up with the idea to have the republicans represented by elephants, which were seen as powerful and wise animals compared to the democrats who are associated with stupid asses!
Presumably this was formulated by a republican!
I think it was posted on some sign cos ppl or ballot paper cos people couldn't read and needed an emblem to associate political parties with.

Elephants aer loud, travels in groups (being alone means you're a freak), and throw their weight around.

Donkeys on the other hand, represent the lower classes; they are the humble farm animal. They carry the burden of society.

(there, just to contradict what other people have said!)

The Republican Party's symbol, the elephant, represents the astounding memory of people who, if you say anything bad about them ever, file it away in a Rolodex of spite...and then trample you to death.

The Democratic Party's syombol, the donkey, represents the type of stubbornness that forces a town council to put a menorah up in the square alongside the Christmas tree even though the town only has five Jewish families.
