Blasphemy!

While I was at Barnes and Noble I passed by the music section. It was there that I saw the top row of books about Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, the Who, the Beatles, Bo Dylan, and then I saw the worst sort of blasphemy. Between Hedrix and Morrison there was a book about Clay Aicken or however the hell you spell it. They put him on the same section as the Who and Henrdix? That is pure and utter blasphemy.
What are your thoughts?

Frankly, I think the Who, Hendrix, Dylan and the Beatles would all probably have had a Helluva lot of fun at the original poster's expense for this all-too familiar old schoolyard musical orthodoxy.

I've never heard of Clay Aicken. From what you've just posted here, Leetspeakers, neither have you. Are you so conservative, so ungiven to curiousity, that you are unwilling to listen to musicians or bands who are not dead, retired, or otherwise non-active?

That's very telling. And rather sad. I can't for the life of me think that George Harrison or John Lennon would have backed you up on your statements.

I've heard that name thrown around. I think he is from American Idol. John Lennon would be tolerant. This makes me sad.

you are looking at this in the wrong way

imagine a 13 year old girl who has been having fantasies of her life with clay aikens, not realizing that he is as gay as the day is long. she goes to borders to buy a book about him and MAYBE she notices one about a more significant musician like hendrix or morrison.

this could be her one big chance to get some good taste.

BlahBlahBlah Hendrix BlahBlahBlah Morrison. Yeah those guys are good but you're forgetting one of the most important(and best) bands of the late 60's-70's: The Velvet Underground. You've probably never heard of them but they're friggen amazing. Doesn't ring a bell? Nico. Still Doesn't? Lou Reed. No? John Cale. Still nothing? Nevermind.

And on a side note did anyone else notice that a lot of good bands have performed at the Whiskey A-Go-Go? The Doors, Velvets, Zappa and the Mothers. Who else?

Wow, a rant like 15 years too late.

What the industry considers rock and roll now is like everything. But it is ridiculous seeing how they put stuff like Ozzy Osbourne on the same billboard chart as good but not rock and roll stuff like Enya and then to really insult them, they top it off with whatever lame boy band and lipsynching bimbo that are popular. In fact, heavy metal and hard rock like Ozzy, Judas Priest, Megadeth and etc doesn't even have its own billboard chart, yet everything else does.....

Then there are the Grammys.... An award show that originally rewarded real rock and roll aka the people who could play electric guitar and etc. and sing. Now it is just a generic award show with whole sections dedicated to other genres that have their own award shows like pop and hip-hop...

Right now, System of a Down is blowing away everything else in sales with their new cd, Mesmerize. A good sign that people have some taste.

DIX!!!!

Clay Aiken should be shot, his CDs burned and American Idol should be replaced by Barney; 10,000 times better.

Er... couldn't someone have just put it down there? Having worked in a bookstore, I can't tell you how many times I've found a romance in with the dictionaries or sci-fi in the classics (the latter two being where the comfy chairs are).

BTW: Clay Aiken was an "American Idol" runner up. He does "boy band" stuff like Backstreet Boys.
(No, I don't like it either.)

And as far as the original poster's arguement goes:
You're right. It's disgraceful that we're beginning to lump the greatest musical artists of the 20th century in with the consumer-pop bullshyte that passes for entertainment these days. More so when said "artist" (and I use the term loosely) is some hack who's never written his own lyrics or music but happens to be excellent at crooning along to other artists contributions, and who is only famous because he won some stupid realitytelevision "contest" like American Idol.

Those 'greatest musical artists' were the consumer-pop bullshyte of thier time.

There has been trash in every generation, and some fine music in each too.

Making this a purist versus populist discussion is premature. We'll know in 2075 or so whether those 50s, 60s, and 70s artists have any real legs.

Although, it has been my observation that good tunes tend to hang around longer than good performances.

I take it that you consider "American Idol" a den of sin and depravity? How does one hold on to his christian faith on a network TV pop show? By actively whacking the other contestants with a Bible? It would be descriptive to say that he was the runner-up in a Star Search ripoff singing contest.

I've actually done that before. I was in the books-on-tape section, and I moved a Sean Hannity book from the nonfiction part to the fiction part. I put it in the right place alphabetically and everything. I'm so naughty!
