Oh, wait. That's not retro. But it's very good when you're stoned. Mmm... Detroit Rock City, then.

Not on the poll, and I say it's retro because it's set in the early 1991, and that's fourteen years ago now--The Big Lebowski is perhaps the greatest stoner movie ever made, as well as one of the most quotable.

I declare that any stoner movie that was filmed before 1994 OR is ABOUT a time before 1994 is okay for this discussion.

Oh yes, and it's Dazed and Confused for me.

"Are you cool man?"
"Like how?"
"(Rolls his eyes and walks away) Ooooooookkkkaaaaayyyyy"

"Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes."

"What are you looking at? Wipe that face off your head, bitch."

"George Washington was in a cult, and the cult was into aliens, man."

"Didja ever look at a dollar bill, man? There's some spooky shit goin' on there. And it's green too."

probably no one else has seen or remembers this one... but "Get Crazy" was lots of fun

http://www.dvdbooty.com/dvds/get-crazy/

It had Lou Reed and Malcom MacDowell, lots of sex, drugs and Rock and Roll, and was fairly silly

What else do you want in a stoner movie?

Truthfully though, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is a damned good and "Dazed and Confused" was so much like what High School was like in my home town (the movie is set in a town just 30 miles from my home town at the same time I went to High School)

but "Get Crazy" was a lot more fun

Damn, voted before I saw this argument. But I will put my selection (Dazed & Confused) up with The Big Lebowski in this critique of the stoner film:

The reason that these are some of the best stoner movies is that they are not stoner movies, per se. Rather they are movies that have characters who are stoners. That The Dude is a stoner isn't the driving aspect of the film, but rather an aspect of the character that contributes to our understanding of him. Likewise, smoking weed is the foil of the conflict of Dazed and Confused, where they make thier decision to be defined (by thier coach, the town, what others expect of them) or whether they define themselves. The decision in this movie isn't easy, they could easily become the Matt Mc's character, who keeps getting older as the high school girls stay the same age. That he thinks that is a good thing underlines that character.

In these stories being a stoner serves the story rather than attempts to drive the story. Because, truth be told, no matter how hardcore the stoner it is not the motivating aspect of thier lives. At the very least, not the most interesting one...

Perhaps more truly a stoner movie then, and to my knowledge not included on this list, is Friday, also a classic and also very quotable. It doesn't have the allegorical qualities of The Big Lebowski, and certainly isn't on that level as a film, but as a stoner film, it's one of the best in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, Big Lebowski is a stoner film, and a good one by not just being a stoner film.

Friday made me laugh so hard I cried...

"Do I still look stoned?" Classic.

Friday will always have a special place in my heart for this reason: the first night my girlfriend and I hooked up was after we got high and watched it. We're going on five years now. Hard to argue with that.

Dunno if it would fit into your definition of 'retro', but I'll put up Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Dr. Gonzo: "Don't worry... I'm just admiring the shape of your skull."

Mister Duke, chewing up the acid: "How long do I have?"
Dr. Gonzo: "As your attorney I'd advise you to drive at top speed. It'll be a miracle if we get there before you turn into a goddamn wild animal."

Mister Duke: "Let's get down to brass tacks, here.... How much for the ape?"

Mister Duke, referring to Dr. Gonzo: "And there he goes. Some kind of rare beast never even considered for mass production. Too wierd to live, too rare to die."

Hunter S. Thompson was a god among men.

a-friggin-men. although i would suggest the book, its even better. like one part in which they are at a taco stand, asking where they might find the american dream. complete gibberish, its classic. i hear they are making the rum diary as well, bruce robinson will be directing. should be great.

and i would agree that the big lebowski is among the greatest stoner movies of all time, assuming you would call it a stoner movie.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High, made in 1982, takes place in 1982. Not retro.

I really liked Detroit Rock City. I found Dazed and Confused a little silly and deliberate.

Best stoner movie of all time, though: Reefer Madness.

Retro as I defined it earlier on was a movie made before 1992 OR a movie that takes place before 92... or around then. 82 was before 92, so therefore it's retro. I don't mean it has to have been retro when it came out, but that it is NOW.
