Hello all,

I feel there's not enough bashing of other countries on this forum already, so I decided to post this ;-)

Only joking... being serious, a bizarre new poll has shown that Sweden is the top national "brand". Apparently we're sexy but reassuring at the same time... hmm.. We're also seen to be intelligent and honest. Makes the heart glow...

I wonder which country people on NSgeneral think has the best national brand... do you agree with the survey's results?

Here's the news article:

1. Sweden
2. UK
3. Italy
4. US/Germany
5. Japan
6. China
7. India
8. South Korea
9. Russia
10. Turkey

The US shared fourth place with Germany, in the poll in which 10,000 people were asked to rank 10 nations.

Anybody care to explain to me how or why there are 11 nations in the results when people were asked to poll only 10 nations?

It was a tie. It's not so uncommon to see that sort of thing on opinion ratings such as these.

US at place 4... with this:

Over 10% of those questioned described the US government as "unpredictable", seven percent as "sinister" and over 10% used the word "dangerous", according to the research.

I'd not give too much credibility to such a poll, even with Germany at a good 4th place, the rank of the US appears way too high for the current international antipathy against the US.

I have to agree now that I've read the compiler's website. I quote:

Consumers in the following countries were polled about their opinion on these nation brands: Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the United States. Representative samples of 1000 consumers (3% margin of error) were collected in each country for a total of 10,000 consumers surveyed. Consumers were not asked questions about their own country.

Hardly an exhaustive piece of research. But, at least they got the result for position 1 right ;)

This I am aware of: but they people were asked to 'rank 10 nations', which strongly suggests there was only a choice of 10 nations to start with. The inclusion of Russia and Turkey in the list also strongly suggests to me (no offense intended) that these were not the top ten results out of all 200-whatever nations.

You're right. It wasn't particularly exhaustive as surveys go! See above quote from the website of the source.

Each people from 10 nations, were asked to rank 10 nations (not including thier own).

Thus, a Swede would be asked to rank:
1. Germany
2. UK
3. Italy
4. US
5. Japan
6. China
7. India
8. South Korea
9. Russia
10. Turkey

A Italian:
1. Sweden
2. UK
3. Germany
4. US
5. Japan
6. China
7. India
8. South Korea
9. Russia
10. Turkey

A German:
1. Sweden
2. UK
3. Italy
4. US
5. Japan
6. China
7. India
8. South Korea
9. Russia
10. Turkey

An American:
1. Sweden
2. UK
3. Italy
4. Germany
5. Japan
6. China
7. India
8. South Korea
9. Russia
10. Turkey

And so forth:

Hense, you will end up with "11" nations in the final rankings. Because all lists, to the various 11 nations, would only have the 10 other nations.

It's not politically correct mention Eire since all Irish folks are in the Provisional IRA.
Seriously though, I missed Eire too. Great music, great people (I think though I've never been there) and a great history.

If you're american, then, only a very tiny amout of Ireland is northern Ireland and that's all you'd hear about on fox f******* news.

If you're not American, then what the hell are you saying?

Eh...okay then.

But seriously, I'd like it if they just cut off nothern Ireland with a big laser and let it float off to sea.

It would be better for everyone (of course those people who aren't pipe bombing everything in site could go to Ireland or England or whatever)

I do have a rather strange sense of humour according to my friends but I were making of political correctness and some silly prejudices I've heard.

Like your solution though.

But have you noticed that only 10 nations were sampled? And that not all made the eleven listed? France being a notable ommission.

These are deep waters ....
