Even though I think they are great, I must say that's true. They are mostly in their 50s now.

maiden rock big time! not the greatest band out there, but one of the all time best, and an influence on the genre of rock & metal for generations... more than 20 years! they deserve respect and admiration from any metalhead, even if the music is a bit dated compared to today's tastes. its still great music

First of all: Uginin, thank you so much for this thread.

Maiden is the best Metal band ever!

As for a favorite song, Fear of the Dark is highly ranked with me, but then again I wouldn't wanna miss any others.

Favorite album is another tough job to pick from - I've got'em all and they all their merits. I'd probably pick Brave New World because the opener is just awesome (could be, though, that I've waited for that album the longest and therefore enjoyed it msot for quite some time).

Up the Irons!

i don't believe that any one band is "the best" but i still love maiden after over a decade of listening to them. although the metal-rules.com poll did award maiden the top metal band spot

i don't have one favorite album, i do have a favorite song off of every album though.....but i am not going to make out that list ;)

For some reason, that album didn't do as much for me as Brave New World did. The songs didn't sound as well put together. Less guitar solos. My favorites off that album were Wildest Dreams, Dance of Death, and Journeyman. It was atypical Maiden.

I can hear ya! For some reason it took me (I dread to admit it!) months to finally listen to the whole album at once - and you're right, it lacks something of that typical Maiden-style, especially if compared to its immediate predecessor BNW!

Hope their next one is better.

One other thing that makes Iron Maiden one of the best bands: They are really, really good soundwise when they perform live - something that not many metal bands can claim for themselves.

IMO, they are the best metal band from the NWOBHM era. Even some of Saxon's older stuff can match Iron Maiden's. The only other band I can think of that might have surpassed Maiden is Judas Priest.

Favourite album: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (and favourite song is one withthe same name)
Favourtie Song Overall: Hallowed Be thy Name.

(Disassociated Press-UK)

In an exciting new discovery today, paleontologoists announced they had uncovered fossil evidence shows that entire species of Iron Maiden like creatures existed at one point in the Earths past. Going by names suchas The Rolling Stones, Chicago and Black Sabbath, these highly evolved specialist scavenger species are beleived to have evolved during the early Modern Music Era, centuries ago during the 60's and 70s. While originaly known for making loud noises and inciting riots with their performances, sceintisits beleive these ancient lifeforms to have transmutated into parodies of their former selves when their music lost all releveance to anyone but other fossils from the same era, plus a few misguided souls called "stoners". This new species has been given a name by the scientists: Dinosaurs.

Actually, if you took the time to listen to Iron Maiden's lyrics none of them are satanic, even songs like Number of the Beast. For example, although my mom hates rock she absolutely loves the lyrics of Wasted Years, "Stop wasting time searching for those wasted years, face up, and realize you're living in your golden years." I think that Iron Maiden's lyrics are most of the time inciteful, and much more intellectual than many people credit them with.

The same thing goes for bands such as System of a Down and Rage Against the Machine.

I must admit I haven't seen many of the bands you mentioned in your original post, but Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are at least two bands that I've seen in the past few years that seem still well before their due dates ;) .

I think the amazing thing about Maiden is that they are still capable of putting out decent albums now- which I think rarely happens with classic bands that try to play forever.

I think they are great, and they were definately ahead of their time, and still hold up against the advances made by modern music.

So I have my respect for Iron Maiden. Not the best heavy metal band of all time, however.

Talking about "The Number of the Beast"... the time before last when I saw Iron Maiden at the Metal 2000 Festival in Germany, during that song Janick Gers fell off the stage and hurt his back pretty seriously (he couldn't perform for quite some time which was a little problem because Maiden had adapted the way they played their songs to three guitars...)
But they were really pros! After they made sure that Janick got the help they needed, they finished the song and played two more encores (I think NotB was already their 2nd song after their "official" finish). After that they all went to the hospital.

IMHO the "Dance of Death" album is the worst catastrophe to happen since World War II, second only to GW Bush's re-election.

But I definitely like Maiden... 4 days (and counting) to my 7th concert :D.

Favorite song: hard to tell. Is it "The Clansman", or is it "Blood Brothers" (live in Rio, with all the fanatics around them)? Or is it a completely different one?

Favorite Album? Maybe it's "Rock in Rio" if you'll include Live records. Otherwise, it's "Brave New World" or "Fear of the Dark".

Exactly, add in the concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and here is no way there sound has not changed. Brave New World and Dance of Death are a bit similar. Although i think BNW is better than DoD album wise, DoD has a couple of real gems song wise.
