I just bought a Sony VAIO PCG-K45 laptop. I tried hooking up the ethernet cord that is normally in my desktop to the laptop so I could connect to the interet, as I don't have a wireless network adapter. When I did this, however, it didn't connect to the enternet and told me there was only limited connectivity. Do you know why it would do this?

I would have to guess it expects a cross-over cable. Which is pretty trivial to make and costs, i don't know 5 cents, if you know how. But given the prevelence of auto-sensing gear I find that kind of surprising. You might be able to fix it from the network adaptor setting too. But it really should just plug and play.

if it worked in your other machine, try checking the network settings.
when it tells you there is limited or no connectivity, it should give you an option to fix the connection, that should fix the network settings for you

I tried repairing a dozen times. It never renewed the IP.

Edit: That's not saying that it's fixed, that's saying that when I tried to do it the IP was not getting renwed and it defaulted to a 'private" address

have you tried changing the settings yourself? if you're disconnecting the other machine, how about trying the settings it has?

goto the cmd prompt and type ipconfig /renew. It might just be wating for the lease to expire.

You might have to type
ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

1. Make sure the network settings on the laptop are the same as the ones on the desktop
2. Laptops have two plugs which look rather similar - one is for the Modem and the other the network cable (don't mix them up)
3. If you use Windows 2000 or XP, there is built-in network indicator in your toolbar which indicates you have network or not. If this has a big red X, it's not working.
4. Use another network connection in case the cable is dodgy

I had a similar prob with my pc. I got a lot of spyware one time and it crashed the connection. I wasn't able to connect to the internet afterwards. It would connect to the ethernet, but say limited or no connectivity.
Eventually after much mucking about and getting nowhere I reinstalled Windows (with an English version which helped greatly). And fixed the prob very quickly. I uninstalled the internet connection, and then reinstalled it. Except I didn't do automatic, I manually entered the supplier's address, my u/n and p/w. It worked fine after that, even though it still warns me that there is 'limited or no connectivity'. But I haven't noticed a drop in connection speed.

I tried doing the ipconfig stuff manually, but it didn't work. So frustrating.

I have no spyware on my computer, nor on my laptop lol - this laptop is brand new out of the box ><

The laptop has an integrated wireless card, by the way - I turned it off and disabled it but didn't do anything.

Did you end up with the "Microsoft Private addressing" again? What are you pluging it into? A switch? A Cable/DSL router? A cable modem? A second network adapter on your other computer? It might not hurt us to see an output from your ipconfig /all. And I might try pinging your loopback just to make sure.... Cause you never know.

using the "cmd" window, and "cd .." go to a directory you can find a file in with explorer. Type "ipconfig /all > ip.txt" Open that file from explorer and copy the data into a reply on this thread. It might be best to even edit it into the first post since that's no doubt what people will read first.

It probably wouldn't hurt to know what your network looks like since this problem is persisting. Right now all I know is Laptop -> ??? ??? -> Internet. Mine (currently) looks like Computer (Indy) -> boradband router -> cable modem -> internet.

Right now its Desktop > DSL modem > internet ><

What I wnat it to be is Laptop > DSL modem > internet ><

If I could afford a wireless router i'd hook that up. my desktop has a wireless card inside it, so heh. I just don't have $60 after spending several thousand on a laptop ><

I have a redundant firewall covering my desktop, I got it from the CDC ><

Pffft. You know not the extent of my paranoia. Though I knew someone who had a BIOS password, a startup password, and passwords protecting a number of programs, as well as 3 or 4 antivirus programs and a large number of firewalls. I laughed when they all started conflicting with each other.

And..CDC?Center for Disease Control?o.O

As for the connection problem, have you tried restarting it with it plugged in?Beyond that, and the suggestions listed here, I'm not sure what to say.

Also..it seems computers hate you. Might I suggest you launch a few of your famed warships after them? *grins*

Yes, I work as a consituent of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and I used my resources with the IDPH and CDC to get me a few free programs for my desktop since I was going to have client and program specific information, or at least that is what I told them.. heh.

Ok, I got it worked. I added the IP from my desktop as an alternate IP configuration, and it magically worked afterwards. Ya for me.

I am typing this on my brand spankin new Sony VAIO übér laptop! And by übér I mean damn near 4ghz, 100 gb hard drive, 1gb DDR memory, and a brand new fucking graphics card.. either the ATI x800 or x850, not exactly sure.. also enjoying my duel layer dvd rewrite drive and all the other spankin new features :-D

I smoke too much crack. My bad. (bah it's working, but this might end up helpful later.)

For the laptop:
Hook it up to the dsl modem and turn it on.
get a cmd window
type:
ipconfig /release *
pconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

put a floppy disk in the laptop (I'm perhaps wrong in assuming it has one)
goto a:
type
ipconfig /all > ip.txt

put the disk in the desktop, and the stuff in ip.txt here.

Other than that, if you've the proper USB cable, and you DSL modem is ethernet/USB you could install the software on the laptop and use the USB cable. There's also the option of using Windows networking and Internet Connection Sharing if you've an extra adapter on your desktop. As a general rule, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a DSL router with firewall as soon as possible.

According to your DHCP lease, you might have a little bit of trouble soon.

I'm assuming that is how Verizon does their DSL, because it only issues a lease for just about 20 minutes. It, of course, renews itself every 15 minutes or so.. because I never, ever get disconnected (unless there is a problem with the phone line at the house, then that is because this house is wired horribly.. heh..)

I LOVE MY FREAKIN LAPTOP.

And no, it doesn't have a floppy disk drive. There is too much of the other goodies to have space for one heh...

The only downside to this mother fucker is the fact that it burns the shit out of my leg because the processor is so fast ><

OK I have another issue.

What do I do about my XP Professional Upgrade Disc?

I want to upgrade this to XP Professional, and I have a disc and cd key to do it (legit..) - but I already used it on my desktop. I want to get rid of it on my desktop and use Home on the desktop and use Pro on here.. what would happen if I upgrade it here and try to activate it??

Should I call Microsoft Customer Service and see what they say?

Eh..I'd go ahead and just use it, but if you really wish to be on the safe side, I'd go for it. Since, technically, you'd only be using one copy of it at a time, it should be fine.

I guess you could get a CDRW and put a file that's probably less than 1k on it. That's kind of awesome in it's own way. The problem with the lease is you don't know when they're going to give you a new IP. And then it's hassle time. Resetting the modem would probably work too. But you're at the point where you'd just be way happier with some kind of dsl router.

But congrats on the laptop. It wouldn't happen to have a lightscribe dvd writer would it?

it wouldn't be a bad idea to run i386/winnt32.exe /cmdcons from the cd after the upgrade either.
