An unhealthy fixation with waging holy war around here.

Poking around the threads, it's really hard to ignore the fact that things look like the front lines of armageddon around here. I suppose when the Kingdom of Heaven or Human Civilisation is at stake (depending on how you look at things), it's hard not to blow things into cosmic proportions.

Still, once half of the threads on the front page have to do with religion, agnosticism, atheism, or any other metaphysical ideological -ism and why it's right or wrong, one has to seriously question things.

I mean, there is a massive world out there with so many things going on. There are elections, plagues, genocides, political oppression, human rights abuses, diplomatic crises, and here we are biting our nails and figuratively pounding our copies of holy books or secular humanist literature, convincing each other against all logic to go one way or the other.

Can we all take a breather and discuss Chinese monetary policy, football... anything else? No one is going to convert anybody to Christianity/Islam/Festivus or to atheism here. We're all set in our ways. We all have the internet. It's all information we could get access to if we really wanted it. I don't see why this place has to be a clearing house for narrow doctrinal worldviews.

I don't know - I'm more into history myself. I guess it's just when someone pounces on Christianity or makes the expected off comment I feel bound to rush to its defense. Other than than, I'd prefer talking about history.

I'm here for policy discussions. Don't know about anybody else.

I just want to find as many rational views as possible on how best to conduct a government administration; and from those divergent views, form my own opinion.

Its easy to get sidetracked, you're right. I've noticed an increasing edge to this place, and it worries me a little. I hope it settles down.

Okay, when do you think the chinese are going to de-peg their currency. I think sometime in the begining of next year. And will it be a bad thing, or a good thing, for the US economy?

Also, do you think that Sen. Chuck Schumer's proposed bill to levy tarrifs on Chinese goods if they don't adjust their currency will effect their decision.

I don't know - no matter how atheists or whoever deny it, the 'opium of the masses' has incredible power. It's a really touchy subject. Hmmm... well if it brings peace to the forum I'll refrain from posting on religious threads as much as I can. I'm tired of arguing ad nauseam actually ;) History and culture anyone?

Peace chaps,

The Chinese are likely to de-peg their currency in a year or so. Not nearly as soon as the US might like. Of course, they are likely to simply re-peg it at a more reasonable value, but there's no chance that they'll float it. Everyone's too skittish from the Asian Currency Crisis.

The effects of the new value will effect different sectors differently, but overall I think the US economy would profit from such a change. We're not competing against China for many products, but our trade imbalance is really starting to hurt us. We could make a lot back by revaluing the Yuan; and the change is unlikely to hurt trade between the two nations very much.

Unless I miss my guess, the tarrif bill is unlikely to pass; so no, I don't think so. If pressure increases though, we might see some wrangling on both sides.

You didn't realize that humans are no more than a convoluted amalgamation of ismistic views? That all of our physicality, DNA, and the like is really merely part of our ismistic nature?
