Major Importance. Can anyone tell me how to get:
4=2^x
Get the X by itself (4=2 to the power of X)

I might be able to help if I knew what the carat ( ^ ) meant. :confused:
4 = 2^x
log 4 = log (2^x)
log 4 = x log 2
(log 4)/(log 2) = x

4 = 2^x
You can rewrite 4 as 2^2, so:
2^2 = 2^x
And there's a mathematical law that states that if the bases are equal, then their exponents are equal as well. Q.E.D.:
x = 2

WRONG BOARD MORON!
4=xx so, whats the square root of 4, 2 so 2=x :D

I know that. But I need the work to do it, and I can't do that if it becoems more complicated.

Meant is it really necessary to say this on the Nation States Boards? And why is this so important? Ask your freinds (if applicable) or your parents, please.

What's with the abuse, people? You never had trouble with a subject in your life?

4 = X*X is not equal to "4 equals 2 to the power of X"
There is a big difference between
____2
4 = X
and
____X
4 = 2
The result may be the same in this case, but to solve the 2nd equasion you definitely have to use log - you can't even take the square root from the 2nd equasion because the base of that root is X, not 2.

Oh, I get you, you're right.. hehe.. but you can just look at that and tell it's 2, right? Well you can do any of the methods described by the nice community, and not the mean me :rolleyes:

No harm done, Evil British Monkeys!
Yes, even I could tell it's X=2 by looking at it - but that doesn't help Jenrak in finding the steps "in between" ;)
Meh. Thanks for your help people. I used the Logarithms posted here and even though it wasn't what my teacher was looking for, it's good enough for him.
I am in High school, and my math mark is in the 80's, so I'm not exactly thick headed. This just isn't my area of expertise. Plus most of my friends are idiots, my parents dropped out of high school, and my teacher isn't exactly Mr. Jolly...
