The infamous "I'm a victim, too!" syndrome.

Everyone is a victim of some sort these days, and I think I'm not alone in saying that it's quite annoying.
It's nearly impossible to turn on the TV or open a newspaper without hearing one of the following:
I weigh about 400 lbs. from eating McGriddles, and OF COURSE McDonald's is to blame!
Ooh, I'm terribly oppressed because my ancestors were slaves 150 years ago! Give me money!
Such-and-Such Inc. won't promote me to the executive position! It MUST be because I'm a woman/homosexual/amputee!
I still remember the days when the archetypal white male was considered to be the single "Master Oppressor" of the universe - a "devil" who was out to dominate everyone.
But it hasn't stopped there. Those white males have splintered off into various groups that each claim to be oppressed: gays, obese people, poor people, etc.
Of course, there ARE actually people in this world who are horribly disenfranchised because of what group they are in, and I'm definitely not pointing the finger at them. I'm just sick of everyone on the planet calling themselves a victim and expecting to be compensated for this alleged victimization.
Their complaining about disadvantages that are either exaggerated or imagined is not only irritating, but also disrespectful to those who have/are actually suffering because of who they are.
This "I'm a victim" syndrome seems to be a recent phenomena, and I have yet to pinpoint the cause. Maybe if people knew what motivates people to behave this way, society would be on its way to ending it.

Crap! We're all "victims" in one way or another. It's just that some of us have enough self-respect not to whine about it or try to make money off of it! :(

I think it would solve part of the problem if we could just crack down on frivolous lawsuits, because a lot of those people like to sue.

By turning Bauhus's thread into a victim fest we have hijacked it and all commited hate crimes. How can we compensate you B? How much money do you need from our insurance companies to feel better?

Ah, victims.........
Think of it this way, if we were never the victim one way or another, how would we ever know when we are not being victimized? Not only that, but being a victim makes you stronger; learning to cope with the wrong makes you a stronger person.
Why complain when you were the one who grew stronger in the end?

Well, let me rephrase that, logical people would not. Now, people who are uninventive and uncreative are the ones who must complain, because they have no other way of dealing with it, but by complaining and hoping to some superior power that after enough whining they get what they want.

I think it has less to do with lack of creativity and more with selfishness.
Everyone in this world is "looking out for number one", and if they think claiming some sort of abuse will further their condition, they wouldn't hesitate to complain.

Well, you are allowed to disagree. ;)
I believe it is lack of creativity, although you do have a point. One person claims "victimization" and a whole others follow suite, because they saw that it worked for one person, so it "must" also work for them.
A creative person who was looking out for just themself may think of another more constructive way of getting what they want without crying; perhaps, stabbing someone else in the back to take their job or sleeping with their boss and killing him after advancing up the business ladder.....who knows, people have come up with some pretty creative ways of getting money.

Years ago people fought and protested for their rights, they didn't whine for them. Why? Because being a victim had a stigma of weakness and cowardice attatched to it. Let's bring that stigma back! Motivate people to take charge of their own lives and fight for what they want rather than whine until someone hands it to them on a silver platter.
Please note, the above post may be historically inaccurate. I just can't be bothered to verify it because Television has made me short of attention and motivation. I'm oppressed by TV and think someone should ban it for me.

Agreed. That's part of the reason I am interested in advocacy. Many people seem to lack the capacity to stand up for themselves. Some with good reason (disabilities), others without good reason. I'd love to be an advocate for patients against health insurance companies, which happen to be number one on my personal Axis of Evil.

I am a firm believer in "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." And it DOES! A 'victim', after dealing w/the trauma, (such as PTSD from Nam, and I have a friend whose father went thru it bad), gets through it, and realizes they can get through any situation at least that difficult.
Finanancially, the 'victim stance' is encouraged my litigeous attorneys: "Oh, my kid fell out of your tree and broke his arm (while trespassing, btw), so we're sueing you".
Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
I'm sure you've all heard about the guy in the Winnebego, and he WON that case! That's just crazy! He was no victim, he was an idiot!

Agreed … ad a penalty for proven frivolous lawsuits (and there should be some set guidelines as to what is considered frivolous and how much the fine is) but make them pay for court costs if it is something completely silly
Couple of thousand dollars later maybe they will make sure they were actually wronged before suing (I am NOT proposing this on anyone that “looses” but if you got a case that is WAY out of left field they should be responsible for the costs their actions incur )

Let's bring that stigma back!
The stigma is only gone for the gutless. For people who are truly suffering, and who are working to overcome that suffering, the stigma is still there. In a society where merit is theoretically rewarded, people still suspect that "bad luck" is self-inflicted. Alain de Botton did a very informative documentary series on it back in 2001.
