Bigger Nerds:ST or SW

Never really into either, but who do you think are the bigger nerds, Star Trek or Star Wars, come on you know you have thought about it.

Oh, and my vote is Star Trek, ever seen that movie trekkies?

I've always thought Trekkies were a bit nerdier than Star Wars fans. Star Wars fans seem to know when to keep their knowledge in check whereas Trekkies are immersed in the life from head-to-toe.

Trekkies try and explain ST with science. Warsies just attack each other with lightsabres.

Speaking as a Trekkie, I would say Star Trek. :) Star Wars seems to be much more mainstream from my point of view.

Never having gone to a convention of either, for those who have which is worse in terms of nerdiness?

Recieving serious burns in the process. How god-damn stupid can you get? Of course a neone light-tube filled with petrol is going to explode if you light it.

I don't know if you can really try and say one is worse than the other. Personally I enjoy both, and I'm hardly the type that you could look at me and say: yeah...that kid's a dork. I was a multi-sport letter winner in HS and stuff...so what does that make me. ST and SW fan...not a dork...?

I think anyone who goes to a convention or has heated debates about which show is better involving the characters or technology instead of the show itself is a dork. Then again...that's just my opinion.

Thats what I'm asking for, not the casual fan, the "this is my life" fan, which do you think is the Bigger nerd

Trek - they actually get philosophical and intellectual over their series, unlike many SW fans I know.

Well if you put it that way...while Trek may be "nerdier"...I'd have to say Wars. From what I've seen on TV, magazines, and the internet...Trek conventions have a lot of book signings and stuff...while Wars conventions go all out with reinactments, full costumes, and other...odd things. *shudder*

There's nothing wrong at all with being a Trekkie or a Warsie. Being a Trekkie, Star Trek is something that just makes me happy. Yes I have heated debates about the characters and the technology, yes I know it's not real, but it's FUN. If people can debate about sports (which is an absoloutely useless activity just like debating sci-fi stuff) then god damn it I'm going to debate Trek stuff. People who think this stuff is pathetic are quite ignorant, but hey that's my opinion.

they're both the same. Trekkies emerse themselves in the lifestyles. Warsies have made the Jedi into a church.

so they are equally "nerdy"

Star Trek. Nothing says nerd quite like a Klingon Dictionary or a pair of Spock Ears.

I'd have to say the Trekkies. I once saw the box for a DVD set of (Voyager?) and it was so plain, only the first disk had any labelling on it! The owner said it had cost $80 used!

I voted Trekkies, but on second thought... I've never heard of groups of them waiting outside a movie theater for three weeks beforehand, dressed to the nines as a Wookie or whatever. They pretty much stick to conventions, where we can safely ignore their nerdiness. So on second thought, SW are bigger.

Also, weight studies show that SW fans actually do possess more body weight, despite Jedi training regimens.

Hardcore Star Wars fans are nerdier.

Of course, the average ST fan is going to be more nerdy than the average SW fan. But this is talking about the crazy people who put "Jedi" as their religion on job applications.

*refers people to British 2001 census* Jedi was the fourth most popular religion. Or was it third? But that was crazy.

yeah but there are real life philosophies and religions close to what one might call the Jedi philosophy

I have attended many convention i can speak and write klingon i am involved in the romulan online rpg. there just isnt as much out there for star wars. the tech in star trek goes deeper. and actualy i am a student of the vulcan philosophoes. so yeah Star Trek all the way.

It was a sorta random phrase that has stayed with me even though I don't watch Stargate anymore. It means, "I die free".

how many star wars nerds do you know that can build a lightsaber or explain in detail how their ships work. TREKKIES are able to describe in detail how to construct a phaser, communocater or a transporter. There are books on the physics of star trek written by world renowned physicists like steven hawking. also all of the technology is explained in detail in numerous books.

Oh god, not one of these people.

Contrary to what you might have read on your favorite fansite, most treknology is not grounded in real physics. Phasers still make no sense, there is still no really plausible explanation as to the workings of transporters, and "subspace communicators" are still only so much psuedo-scientific BS.

Haha. I did that, but it was more for a joke. Got an e-mail saying if they got more than 10,000 people the Government had to accept it as a real religion!

You don't have to "worship" the Force. You simply have to have faith that it exists, and when someone dies, they become the Force. That is Jedism. Of course, you must adhere to the Jedi code.

I know it is pseudo science. WE are talking about science fiction here. I am simply saying that provided the rules in Star trek applied it would be possible for me to build the things used. I was not saying that those thingfs were actualy posible.

In which case anyone could build certain SW tech. ST isn't the only scifi with tech manuals.

I personally tend to see it the other way. All the people I know who are Star Wars fans are immersed in it, whereas all the Star Trek fans (myself included) are more moderate. Hrm.

Star Trek is 'nerdier' because it's science fiction. Star Wars is space opera. Star Trek is in line with other science-based futuristic literature (like 2001: Space Odyssey and some Isaac Asimov). Star Wars is in line with other fantasy-myth literature (like Wagner's ring cycle, Tolkein's LOTR, and, according to Joseph Campbell, every myth since the beginning of time).

Thus, there's a fundamental difference in what attracts people to the two shows. Since Star Trek's main appeal is science, and story elements are a secondary concern, it makes sense that the main fan base would be 'nerdy'. Star Wars' appeal is resonance with the story--the monomyth (the statement-departure-return, archetypal model supposedly followed by most, if not all, myth). Willingness to suspend disbelief scientifically or consider possible alternate scientific realms is secondary in Star Wars.

I've always thought that Trekies were a little more into it because there is so much of it to get don't get me wrong i like Trek just as much as Star Wars but there is only the Jedi philosophy in the movies. Trek has the Bijorn and all the other species and worlds and everything they even have their own languages Klingon thats somethin that Star Wars doesnt really have unless you learn huttese cause galactic basic is english!? :headbang:

There simply is more Trek than there is Wars. There are only six Wars movies whereas there are over 700 episodes of Trek (total) and what, nine movies? Ten? All "warsies" ever do is impersonate yoda and beat each other up with glowing plastic sticks. Trekkies go to conventions, buy expensive DVD episodes, and speak Klingon. Okay, yeah there is a Huttese dictionary but how many people are really going to learn the language of the fat sluglike things?

well its almost for sure that star trek is nerdier. I am a star wars fan, for one reason, i can understand wut the hell those ppl are saying. Besides i like a movie thats based not on a ship. Star Trek... the most they do is fight in their ship, and occasionally on some random planet...

But I think they're both as dorkish.

Star Wars is easier to undderstand if your not into it. The Star Trek universe seems to be larger. Star Trek is more a picture of how the future could be, while Star Wars is "in a galaxy far, far away." I'd say that Trekkies are nerdier, though I haave never really seen an intense SW fan.

You have to use a Chevy Lumina for that, it's the only van out there that really approximates the shape correctly I think.
