Apples come in many different varieties. Some are sweet, some are sour. My favorite is the nice, sour Granny Smith variety.

Oranges come in fewer varieties, but they also blend sweetness with sour.

I prefer both apples and oranges to be of the sweet but tart variety. Best apples I've ever had are called Gingersnaps. They're still somewhat experimental, I can only get them for about 1 month of the year in this area. First time I bit into one was a very pleasant surprise. I thought it was just a slightly small Granny Smith. They look like Granny Smith, but they're very sweet and tangy in flavour.

MacIntosh "apples" are the most vile thing out there. Thick, incredibly bitter skin with watery, weak tasting pulp. I have no idea why they're so popular.

The fucking supermarkets in the UK are destroying the apple industry. Any variety that don't conform to their ludicrous specs are being wiped out. Cox apples get imported from Holland. Nothing sour or irregularly shaped gets through. Bastards!

There's a variety of apple called Winesap, which tastes like food for the gods, at least to my palate. Unfortunately, they're a bit difficult to grow for some reason, and so are hard to find outside of a few states ( Upstate New York being one place I have found them ). I find this very sad. :(

Winesap- These are good-I used to live in upstate NY which may be the apple capital of the world.
Red and Golden Delicious also great.
