Here is the story.
A woman is found wandering the streets. She seems a bit bewildered and quite lost. The police take her into custody and attempt to find her details so they can help.
The woman speaks only german and an interpreter is located to communicate.
The woman calls herself Anna Johansen and claims to be a German national.
She has no passport or other documents, Customs can not locate a file on the woman's entry to your country and the German Consulate has no record of her ever leaving Germany.
What do you, as the Government do?

Launch her into outer space. It works for everyone else.
Ask her how she got here? Then send her back to Germany?

[Amanda Vandstone]Lock her up in a concentration camp in the middle of the desert for a few months while denying her access to proper mental health facilities.[/Amanda Vandstone]
How far off track am I?

It depends on the size of her breasts.

Right on the money :D
I'd prob take her fingerprints and put them into the international system and see what comes up. Interpol may know something about her too.

Well done!
But you still have not answered the question what would you have done?
Stragely enough it takes time to find some mental illness and considering she was going about her business quite normally claiming to be a German Citizen (until she started eating grass) the authorities had no reason to believe that she was unstable.
It is a sad case but this business of wanting compensation is a joke!
The authorities did what they thought was right and I would have probably either sent her to Germany and further away from the help she needed or put her into detention until such time as her identity could be verified.
Oh and don't forget it was the Queensland police who first picked her up and then put her in jail before dumping her on the Federal Government to deal with her case.

That's just plain bad. :D
She is a German National who never left Germany and never entered my nation. Obviousy, she is the unfortunate victim of spontaneous quantum teleportation. I would have physicists examine her for residual radiation and then send her back home.

What we all fail to realise is that we are a figment of her hallucinogenic imagination. She's imagining all of this due to her mental instability. You, me, this forum, Australia, all exist in her mind's eye. The minute they realise she's crazy and put her on meds, we'll all disappear.

Truthfully I probably would have had her processed her according to the law, which would have probably ended up with exactly the same results. But IMHO the law should be changed to be more humanitarian.
And it was the NSW police, her car crash was in Lismore, northern NSW. She was later transferred to Baxter detention centre in Queensland as I understand it.
