Life may not be exactly pleasant, but it is at least not dull. Heave yourself into Hell today, and you may miss, tomorrow or next day, another Scopes trial, or another War to End War, or perchance a rich and buxom widow with all her first husband's clothes. Dig and thou shalt be dug--Lord Buckley
Aha-I thought I caught the reference!

I should add a quote instead of being proud of identifying another Lord Buckley fan (currently wishing I had named my nation "The Hip Gahn")

There's the one in the sig-"Like an old drug pusher once told me, watch who's money you take." William S. Burroughs

Similar to Lord Buckley, "I play it cool and dig all jive, and that's the way I stay alive. And my motto, as I live and learn? Dig, and be dug in return." Langston Hughes.

You're unique. Just like everyone else.

In this life, everybody has something that they can do better than anyone else. Unfortunately, for most people, this thing is "reading their own handwriting".

Suppose there was no intelligence behind the universe. In that case nobody designed my brain for the purpose of thinking. Thought is merely the by-product of some atoms within my skull. But if so, how can I trust my own thinking to be true? But if I can't trust my own thinking, of course I can't trust the arguments leading to atheism, and therefore have no reason to be an atheist or anything else. Unless I believe in God, I can't believe in thought; so I can never use thought to disbelieve in God. -C.S. Lewis

-C.S. Lewis

I urge you to beware the temptation ... to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire, to simply call the arms race a giant misunderstanding and thereby remove yourself from the struggle between right and wrong, good and evil."

We are witnessing today a great revolutionary crisis -- a crisis where the demands of the economic order are colliding directly with those of the political order. But the crisis is happening not in the free, non-Marxist West, but in the home of Marxism-Leninism, the Soviet Union.... [Communism will be] left on the ash heap of history."

"The years ahead will be great ones for our country, for the cause of freedom and the spread of civilization. The West will not contain Communism, it will transcend Communism. Quotes i live my life by:
they're a collection i've stored up in a word file over the last couple of years, and come from all over the place... not just your usual quote sources like authors or heads of state - a couple even come from fictional characters, things i've said myself and deemed quote-worthy, and, in fact, you might even recognise a few things NSers have said;)

The Ten Commandments are for lame brains. The first five are solely for the benefit of the priests and the powers that be; the second five are half truths, neither complete nor adequate. - Ira Johnson in To Sail Beyond the Sunset

I would say that my position is not too far from that of Ayn Rand's; that I would like to see government reduced to no more than internal police and courts, external armed forces--with the other matters handled otherwise. I'm sick of the way the government sticks its nose into everything, now. - Robert A. Heinlein in The Robert Heinlein Interview And Other Heinleinana by J. Neil Schulman

From politics I have come to believe the following:

(1) Most people are basically honest, kind and decent.

(2) The American people are wise enough to run their own affairs. The do not need Fuehrers, Strong Men, Technocrats, Commissars, Silver Shirts, Theocrats, or any other sort of dictator.

(3) Americans have a compatible community of ambitions. Most of them don't want to be rich but do want enough economic security to permit them to raise families in decent comfort without fear of the future. They want the least government necessary to this purpose and don't greatly mind what the other fellow does as long as it does not interfere with them living their own lives. As a people we are neither money mad nor prying. We are easy-going and anarchistic. We may want to keep up with the Joneses -- but not with the Vanderbilts. We don't like cops.

(4) Democracy is not an automatic condition resulting from laws and constitutions. It is a living, dynamic process which must be worked at by you yourself -- or it ceases to be democracy, even if the shell and form remains.

(5) One way or another, any government which remains in power is a representative government. If your city government is a crooked machine, then it is because you and your neighbors prefer it that way -- prefer it to the effort of running your own affairs. Hitler's government was a popular government; the vast majority of Germans preferred the rule of gangsters to the effort of thinking and doing for themselves. They abdicated their franchise.

(6) Democracy is the most efficient form of government ever invented by the human race. On the record, it has worked better in peace and in war than fascism, communism, or any other form of dictatorship. As for the mythical yardstick of 'benevolent' monarchy or dictatorship -- there ain't no such animal!

(7) A single citizen, with no political connections and no money, can be extremely effective in politics. - Take Back Your Government - A Practical Handbook for the private citizen who wants democracy to work. By Robert A. Heinlein.

The hell I won't talk that way! Peter, an eternity here without her is not an eternity of bliss; it is an eternity of boredom and loneliness and grief. You think this damned gaudy halo means anything to me when I know--yes, you've convinced me!--that my beloved is burning in the Pit? I didn't ask much. Just to be allowed to live with her. I was willing to wash dishes forever if only I could see her smile, hear her voice, touch her hand! She's been shipped on a technicality and you know it! Snobbish, bad-tempered angels get to live here without ever doing one lick to deserve it. But my Marga, who is a real angel if one ever lived, gets turned down and sent to Hell to everlasting torture on a childish twist in the rules. You can tell the Father and His sweet-talking Son and that sneaky Ghost that they can take their gaudy Holy City and shove it! If Margrethe has to be in Hell, that's where I want to be! - Alexander Hergensheimer in Job: A Comedy of Justice

I had taken a partner once before- but, damnation, no matter how many times you get your fingers burned, you have to trust people. Otherwise you are a hermit in a cave, sleeping with one eye open. There wasn't anyway to be safe; just being alive was deadly dangerous.. fatal. In the end. - Daniel Boone Davis in The Door into Summer.

'Love' is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own. - jubal harshaw in stranger in a strange land

I also think there are prices too high to pay to save the United States. Conscription is one of them. Conscription is slavery, and I don't think that any people or nation has a right to save itself at the price of slavery for anyone, no matter what name it is called. We have had the draft for twenty years now; I think this is shameful. If a country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain! - Guest of Honor Speech at the XIXth World Science Fiction Convention, Seattle, 1961

"There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. " - O'Brien, '1984'

"There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life.
All competing pleasures will be destroyed.
But always -do not forget this, Winston- always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and growing subtler.
Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of an enemy who is helpless.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-for ever.....And remember that is for ever. The face will always be there to be stamped upon. The heretic, the enemy of society, will always be there, so that he can be humiliated over again."
- O' Brien, '1984'

"It will be a world of terror as much as a world of triumph. The more the Party is powerful, the less it will be tolerant: the weaker the opposition, the tighter the despotism." - O'Brien, '1984'

Dare to be a Daniel,
Dare to stand alone,
Dare to have a purpose firm,
Dare to let it (be) known." -Tony Benn

"The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself...Almost inevitably, he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable."
- H.L. Mencken

"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened." -Winston Churchill

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply to painful to acknowledge--even to ourselves--that we've been so credulous." - Carl Sagan

"No, they are being defeated, that's why they continue to fight."

DIBERGI: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
TUFNEL: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

DIBERGI: I don't know.

TUFNEL: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

DIBERGI: Put it up to eleven.

TUFNEL: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

DIBERGI: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

TUFNEL: (Extremely long pause) These go to eleven.

Mark Twain (Samuel Clements) said, "If the only tool you own is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail." My personal non religious favorite.

O CHILDREN OF MEN!
Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created. Since We have created you all from one same substance it is incumbent on you to be even as one soul, to walk with the same feet, eat with the same mouth and dwell in the same land, that from your inmost being, by your deeds and actions, the signs of oneness and the essence of detachment may be made manifest. Such is My counsel to you, O concourse of light! Heed ye this counsel that ye may obtain the fruit of holiness from the tree of wondrous glory.

If - Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And-which is more-you'll be a Man, my son!

The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would onto them." (Matthew 7:12). It's not just a religious quote.

Actually a quote from Kon-Foe-Tse, and several other philosophers in other regions of the world - way before there was a Bible. It's THE ultimate cultural quote, found in almost the same form in every single civilisation in this world.

The buddha:
- "What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind." (the importance of history and historicism - take that American school-system!)
- "All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else." (the good and bad only exist together, and both are embedded in a historic system)
- "Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true." (mind you, he wasn't talking about empiricism, but the test of the path of eight truths)
- "Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill." (i.e., think before you flame)
- "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it."
