A Lucky Escape

British & Irish Lions 25 Argentina 25

How lucky are the Lions, Argentina dominated most of the game especially in the scrum and at the break down plus their kicker despite being unconventional managed to kick all 7 attempts at goal despite some very difficult angles.

1. So how did you rate the Lions performance?

2. Who was the Lion's man of the match?

3. Who was Argentina's man of the match?

4. And finally how do you think the Lion's will get on in New Zealand?

My answers for the above are:

1. Poor but their were some positives. I thought Ollie Smith took his try well and generally looked lively in the back line, Wilkinson had a good running game going but his kicking out of hand was aimless, the line out functioned well with both hookers hitting their men and Cusiter came on and passed brilliantly. The negetives were that the scrum was completely massacured while Argentina dominated the break downs, the back play was a bit rusty but that should get better with time and finally i felt D'Arcy gave away a few too many penalties and that Gareth Cooper wasn't that sharp with his passing and judgement.

2. A hard one but I go for Ollie Smith as he showed us with his try what the England team missed in the 6 Nations and seemed to link well especially with Wilkinson.

3. M Ledesma Argentinas hooker, he with both his props destroyed the Lions scrum and guarded the breakdown's well. His performance provided the platform for Argentins kicker to score the points.

4. After this performance 2-1 to New Zealand would be a bit optamistic, though this was only the Lions second team and there is alot more time for iron out the problems before the First Test, so i'm going for 2-1 to the Lions :) !

Hey, my BEST claim to fame...

When I was at primary school I was in the class of a guy whose dad used to PLAY for the Lions, and then he became physio for them.

Ah, damn primary school was COOL.

It's not as if it was our first team either plus we are still geling and there is alot of game time between now and the first test so New Zealand better watch it before you start to think it'll be a 3-0 walk over!

Damn, I knew there was something I was meant to watch instead of revising! That's what all this exam stress does to me, you know, makes me forget things. Which is kind of ironic, in its own little way

I'm more of a league man myself, though *waits for the inevitable league-bashing*

I agree O'Driscoll is a world class player but not even he could have saved the Lions blushes last night.

well, he pretty much single handedly saved Ireland against Italy in the 6 Nations, and in another match too (but i forget which), so never underestimate the impact he can have - hes pure genius at creating scores out of nothing

edit: and they should have picked Humphreys over O'Gara

The only thing to come out of that match was that Wilkonsins kicking was accurate. They're going to have trouble in the tour games if they can only muster a draw against argentina.

I'm now wondering who the back 3 for the All Blacks is going to be. After last season, it seamed the combo of howlett, mils and rocokoco would be assured but they've all had absolutely shit super 12s, and now Joe's off with the 7s team and Mils is playing centre in the trial.

Tana Umaga is a whooooole other defensive prospect for him to try and run passed though.

Yea he would have needed literally to make things out of nothing as the Lions hardly ever had the ball! As Argentina dominated the scrums, the rucks and the restarts it's lucky that we even saw the ball never mind created anything.

Still O'Driscoll can get through even the toughest of defences especially with the distribution of Peel, Wilkinson (Or Jones) and Henson.

Thats why its 'the house of pain'

Actually, if I remember correctly it took Australia 96 years to win a game in dunedin, and we've played them way more than anyone.

Is it true that most of the rugby grounds in New Zealand are creicket grounds during the summer months? Also has any Northern Hemisphere team won at Dunedin?

A lot of them are, but most domestic teams have a seperate ground to avoid clashes with rugby, with internationals played at the main grounds.

I'm not sure, one probably has at some stage. I'm having a look around Allblacks.com at the history against various teams to find out.

They've lost to the lions there twice, once in 1971 and once in 1930. Not bad for the lions cosidering their all time record against the All Blacks is 6-26-3 (wins-losses-draws)
