Next-gen consoles.

Well, I decided to make a rant on the new consoles. Mostly cons, but only because the pro's have been often covered...much to often.

Playstation three:

Well, I admit, I came into it without being that excited for it. Playstation has always been, in my mind, the bottom of the barrel in power, and just having the best games. I expect this will be the case with the PS3.

First off, I've been checking out the specs. I wasn't sure whether to smile in righteousness, or frown in discontent, when I saw that Nvidia was making the PS3 card. Apparently, the PS3 is going to have an RSX card that is as powerful as a dual 6800 SLI setup, which costs 1,000 dollars for the two cards alone. Assuming PS3 is supposed to cost less than 500 dollars, total, I somehow doubt it.

The CPU looks alright. 3.2ghz should be fine for anything on a console. Its not an amd, but afaik, amd isnt making any console ones(I know not for revolution and the PS3). The thing that really gets me, is the ram. Honestly, you don't put in a super-powered card, a great cpu, and only 512 megabytes of ram. The next computer I get will have a 2.0ghz processor(amd though), a Radeon X800 256mb, and 2 gigs of ram. I wouldn't be seen dead with 512 ram. I know its more focused ram, but still. I would much rather them spring for a cheaper card, and raise the ram. Graphics isnt everything.

Sony looks like its falling behind in the online category. Xbox is well established, and Revolution is supposed to have free service from release, with games supporting it. Revolution will also supposedly have the ability to download old nintendo games, from NES to N64. When it comes to PS3, all we hear is that there will be some online component, and a lot of rumors. Looking at PS2, Im not that confident.

Xbox 360:

I expected more from the hardware. Really, microsoft. 3.2ghz processor that is looking weaker than the PS3 one. 512mb ram too? Why not just shoot yourself in the foot?

At least they did the card right. An awesome radeon, supposedly stronger than the X850 512mb. Looks like Xbox will win-out in graphics. Again.

Games aren't interesting me much. As was the case with Xbox, once you get Halo, you pretty much have a good collection. Maybe a sports game and another good MP game, and you are set. Maybe thats enough for some people. I do wish they would port Starcraft ghost to it. Ghost does come out after the 360. Call of duty 2 is a plus.

Nintendo Revolution:

Well, late as always. Looks like it will again fit in niche of the cheap system that is nice in its own ways.

From the rumors circulating, which isn't much, the processor will be between 1.7ghz and 2.4 ghz. Not that much really. The ATI card hasn't gotten much info out either, but I expect it to blow the PS3 card out of the water. Havn't heard anything about ram or hard-drive, but doesnt sound like it will have much of either.

Online looks like it will surpass PS3, but be under Xbox 360(though they are different purposes, in some places, so hard to say).

Really, I'm having a hard time pegging the Revolution. It will probably be the cheapest, maybe by a large margin. It looks like its going to have smaller capacity CD's, which isnt great. Honestly, Revolution looks like it will either take its post-SNES role of the back-up system with some fun games, especially multiplayer, or it might blow the other systems out of the water(maybe not in specs, but other areas).

Pc will still hold precedence over all of them, though. I expect my machine(which I will be getting in about 3 months) will have a much longer life than any of these consoles, much more use, and just better capabilities. Now, if only I could rip the Xbox ATI card out of its box, and shove it into my PC...

I've heard the next Final Fantasy is pegged for XBox. I'll still be getting a PS3, though - at the end of the day, consoles are all about who has the best games, and on that front Sony win hands down

To be honest, hardware isn't that important. It's good game design that matters. The real reason to buy a new console is because they'll stop producing games for the old ones.

Sony won for PS2... Its quite likely that Xbox, now being more established, will begin to get a larger share of big game titles. Such as Final Fantasy. In fact, Final fantasy seems to be a good measure of the direction. It went from NES, to SNES, to PS1, to PS2, to Xbox 360. Pretty much the same way with all the good games.

Specs are pretty much all we have to go on now...which is why I could care less. Its the coding and business model that they decide to use that determines the entire affair.

3rd party support is a little talked about but vital affair. Halos, Marios, Solid Snakes, we all know that certain characters, certain companies WILL be involved in game creation. The trick is how easy is it to make games, how cheap is it, and how many of said games are good.

In the last generation of systems, the PS1 was a golden age of 3rd party support. As its compitition was the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Dreamcast. Some of the best unknown titles came out for the PS1, since the cost of making a game was minimal and the coding for it was simple, it attracted tons of unknowns to the gaming industry. Mind you, many of those games sucked, but enough gems came out in the rough to make people remember the good stuff, not the bad.

In the current generation, X-box 3rd party titles are still seen as below-average games. PS 2 was much harder to code for than the PS1, the result was that 3rd party games didn't start showing up until YEARS after the launch. Nintendo seems to have all but foresaken 3rd party titles. It buys the few that it wants, and then releases an amazing game every 3-6 months on its own.

The next generation of consoles have to really figure out just how to attract these independant, unknown game makers to their system. That's one of the key factors in Console success.

I doubt that will be the case. Ever since the Nintendo days of Square, they have had very strong ties with Sony. A proof of this being that FF was included as a tech demo for the PS3 along with game previews like Killzone 2. Plus, I don't think Sony is going to give up one of their best game series up so easily. It's almost comparable to XBox giving up Halo.

If you read the nintendo e3 conference, one of the biggest things they harped on was that it was the games, not the hardware, that made the game. They specifically talked about how easy it was supposed to be for game makers to make games. Not to say this is 100% true, but its what is said.

I am a game producer for computer(well, a modder, but still a lot of work), I know all about the process. I do agree with what you are all saying, though hardware is still defidentally important. As a modeler, I am oft hindered by polygon counts I am limited too. It makes the process slower for me, much of the time, as I have to worry more about optimization.

No - they are making Final Fantasy 11 for XBox, because it takes advantage of XBox live - after that, the FF series will go back to Playstation

I can't see Sony giving up FF for good without a fight. At the moment it's their best line of games, by far. I for one will go where the FF series goes, and I highly doubt i'm the only person in the world thinking that.

Well, Microsoft does have more money to throw around. Squaresoft might go with the dollarsigns.

Or square/enix could be smart and whore themselves out to EVERYONE. This would make pretty much everyone happy.
