Actually in the 60's and 70's Peter cook was very popular in the US. He just fucked up by drinking to much!

That's so sad that a in forum full to the brim of Python fanatics there would be a poll that is equal (at time of this going to press) between 'Peter Cook - Genuis' and 'Peter Cook - who?'.
Come on people - where do you think the Pythons got their ideas from? It was Derek and Clive who lay the groundwork, along with the Goons, that allowed Python to be made.
Peter Cook - an absolute comic genius (and absolute arsehole too by the sounds of it).

As to whether Peter Cook was an arsehole, I recently read an interview with his daughter in which she said he was a really nice guy. He just had problems with Depression and Paranoia which caused him to act destructively at times, but in general he was a decent guy. I think the press at the time, (And to a lesser extent now) like to present the image of him being a bastard cos it's better for them. Also I think peter Cook presented himself as a bastard at times for publicity reasons.

I could be entirely wrong, I didn't know him. But if someone is writing a book on someone, and they claim they were a bastard, it's not going to hurt sales, so I take it with a pinch of salt.
