Just a lil poll...
...please, feel free to chew me out because I forgot something or you disagree with the choices..:)
I'm not a real thrash fan, but out of the few of those that i've heard, I don't mind Anthrax.
Megadeth, with Anthrax and Slayer close behind.

excellent list...so hard to decide
i have to go with exodus or testament manily because they are a few of the ones(well ok death angel and overkill to) still playing kick arse thrash
slayer and anthrax are both a bit to "hit and miss" with thier albums, metallica was solid till they sold out back in the early 90's, and who knows what dave mustane is thinking. haven't heard the newest metal church so i cannot comment on that one(but i have all thier other stuff).
I dont like thrash metal, but I love the bay area, so I felt i must post.

I dont think Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax are considered bay area thrash (specially since Anthrax are New Yorkers). But just in case they are somehow considered bay area thrash, I voted for Slayer.

the haunted aren't from the US? i guess you learn something every day...
and a message to everyone: if you haven't already, go out and listen to some Testament. get the new release Days Of Darkness... they're still the best damn doom/thrash fuckin' heavy band out there imo http://www.midian.nl/images/smilies/headbang.gif

I would say old Metallica
Although Testament (Not Musically) reminds of Strapping Young Lad, bacuse an ex-Testament drummer is with them, but not sure whether they are U.S. or Canadan band, or if count as thrash

sounds to me like your confusing current metallica with thier former glory. some bands get better with age. sadly metallica decided to sell out thier integrity, playing and songwriting skill in the early 90's so they could jump on the next bandwagon.

Not at all. Metallica the band changed because the people in the band changed. They grew up. They stopped writing angry music because they were no longer angry people. If they had faked anger and kept putting out music rich with anger and darkness in order to placate their fans, that would be the ultimate lack of integrity. They remained true to themselves rather than faking it for the benefit of the fans. Had they continued making the same type of dark, angry music despite their new attitude, they wouldve been fakes, they wouldve sold themselves out rather than be true to themselves. People change. I agree with you, new Metallica sucks compared to old Metallica. But that doesnt mean that they should sell out who they are so they can please me and you. They should be true to themselves, and thats what they are doing.
Also, the idea that they jumped on some bandwagon is ridiculous. When Load was released there was nothing else like it in the market (or if there was, it was not anything mainstream or successful). Today, there is still nothing out there that sounds like Metallica. What bandwagon could they have jumped on?

Anthrax are actually from New York City. ;)
Also, you ought to of included Razor (who are from Toronto, but have as much right as Anthrax) and Stormtroopers of Death, even if it would of cost Death Angel or Metal Church or Exodus a spot...

incorrect by all accounts
i've heard the "they grew up" or "changed" arguments
both of them hold no water. do you think maiden, saxon, manOwar, grave digger, iced earth, blind guardian etc.. havn't "grown" or "changed" with age?
yet they still make kick arse metal music. because thats what they do best.
if they want to follow other creative paths then the band should have taken a respite or changed thier name (like heart did with the love mongers) so they could all work on side/solo projects like jason newstead eventually did(something lars would not alllow as long as he was part of metallica).
metallica is the empitome of sellouts. they swore many things in thier career that they would never do, and then they turned around in the load era and started doing all the stuff they swore they would never do.
load and reload both combined elements of all the music that was mainstream popular at the time of thier release and to further thier trend hopping, when they released st. anger they said they were going back to the way they used to sound to appeal to fans of thier original music...unfortunately they seem to think they sounded like korn....which is of course what was the popular style of rock music at the time they released st. anger.
this is not about being true to themselves, it's all about maintaining thier mainstream rock popularity when most metal bands went back into the underground scene in the US market.

Exactly. And, remember the Napster ordeal? They were supporting it in the beginning, but they decided that money was more important than fans, so they stopped supporting it and helped in Napster's downfall. Wanktallica sucks.

All of those are bands that sing fantasy songs. They never did and still dont sing music that comes from the heart. There is a big difference between that and metallica.
You claim that they sold out but have still been unable to name what band Load sounded like. It sounded like no other popular band of the time. So where is the bandwagon they jumped on? What was popular in 1996 in the rock genre was Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and Marilyn Manson. Load sounded like none of those.

oh really? have you ever spoken with any of these band members?
because i have( manOwar, lullacry, hammerfall, dark tranquility, sinergy, children of bodom, to name a few) and i can tell you, you are full of crap. they most certainly do sing from the heart. ever bothered to read any of steve harris's interviews? he is devoted to the style he likes to play and has fought to play for decades. joey demaio from manOwar is downright over the top when he is explaining his joys of singing certain songs. the subject matter weather fantasy, black, gothic, melodic death, thrash or angst it is still just as important to these musicians, even if it isn't to you.

load didn't sound like any one particular band, it was a merging of several popular styles of the time, part grunge, part alternative, part industrial, none of it thrash metal. st. anger is an even more obvious ploy to the "nu-metal" (mallcore) fanbase. when it came out all the mallcore fans i heard from all thought it was the best thing metallica had ever done. where as metalheads such as myself thought it was the worst steaming pile of dung they had ever made....even worse than the load albums which was a suprise.
I said Metal Church, really I love all the bands listed though
