The definition of 'hacker'

"Originally, a hacker was someone who made furniture with an axe. In computing slang it is a person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. Also, one who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming."

But technology isn't the only place you can apply your hacker mentality. They are what i consider the "light side". They help others, find solutions to new problems and pass it down, always learning something. They usually help software companies with their security for profit, or maybe create a new program and upload it to a site as freeware. Their motives usually end up being to make the internet better, to never solve a problem twice, and to make things better for everyone.

But you can apply that to anything, not just technology.

Definition of 'cracker'

"A cracker is one who engages in one or more of the following: 1) breaks into a computer system; 2) figures out ways to bypass security or license protection in software; 3) intentionally breaches computer security. Contrary to popular belief, Cracker is not synonymous with Hacker."

I consider this the "darkside" if you will, but don't take "lightside" or "darkside" too literally, there are also grey areas where people just do their own thing and strive to dodge a stereotype. These people often do things for their own ends. They may look to profit with every venture, or gain respect. It depends on the person. They don't really care about helping anyone but themselves, and they like to manipulate to reach their own ends. It could be by social engineering, using programs (made or not by the cracker), exploiting stuff on the scene...... The possibilities are endless.

They will almost always go into something for a reason. They would ask themselves "How do i make my own trojan?" "How do i make my own virii?" And then they would ask themselves "Which programming language do i need to utilize?" And then they will be relentless in their pursuit of knowledge, so that they can create their own trojan/virus, and then put it on their own site, or anothers so that they will gain respect among others... They may even intentionally manipulate their own programs so that they will do more than you think when you d/l it and attempt to execute.

And no, the ways of the cracker doesn't have to be limited to technology. You can really use it anywhere, and like a hacker, you can be creative.. Like "How can i be a music cracker/hacker?" And then try to learn an instrument or two, and a cracker might want to be looked up to, and a hacker might just do it for the music.... To contribute to music, and to find solutions to problems and pass it down, or just love music and want to begin a career.

That's all i wanted to say... :D

*ADDITION*

Crackers will usually stay within the law, not do things that will be on the grounds to be arrested. But of course there are those that go too far... They were made to be caught, and sometimes they're even hired by the government or a company depending on the type of cracker. If you're interested in cracking, just be yourself.. You're already one, you just procrastinate too much.. If you want to be a hacker, well, i bet you already are one, you might just not consider yourself a hacker... Many hackers will do that. Good example! Crackers will say they're crackers (unless it's not in their best interest to), and a hacker will often not consider themselves to be hackers, they will get called one by other hackers as a way of "endorsement" if you wanna call it that.............
