Harry Potter or Barry Trotter?

The Noble Men

So, who do you prefer? Harry or his parody?
I like both of them.

Oh, and this is for the one other person who voted:

Barry Trotter is the parody of Harry Potter by Micheal Gerber. There are currently 3 volumes:
Barry Trotter and The Shameless Parody
Barry Trotter and The Unnecessary Sequel
Barry Trotter and The Dead Horse

Each one is dedicated to poking fun at both Harry Potter and Micheal Gerber.

Hey, if people are going to vote could you at least post something?! I feel quite redundant when people don't post after all my hard work! :(

Well, it seems not one single person hasn't heard of Harry Potter. And plays NationStates.

I think the parody is awful. Tired jokes and lame puns that got very boring very fast. I guess I can see why it might be enjoyable, and I've only read the first one, but for me it was too unimaginative.

I think that the tired puns and lame jokes could be a strength. It knows that it's a bit crap, and it plays up on this fact, rather than pretend it's literary genius.

HP has a lot of lame puns as well, and these also annoy me. Lame puns of lame puns...OTT.

Too true. The worst thing is, since Harry is still a childrens' novel (only just, mind you), the puns have to be kept suitable for the young ones' eyes. This drastically shortens the amount of puns possible. Annoying.

I'll second that.

It's hard to see how she'll keep it child friendly all the way to the end without it becoming absolute crap.

To be honest, I don't think she's trying to keep it kiddie-safe any more, so long as it sells. As she only has to write one more book, I don't think it will become crap, just tired.

It's a lot more kiddie-safe than it could have been.

The deaths are very tame, more along the lines of "he's asleep and wont be waking up again" than anything else. Take that part in TOotP, in the Ministry of Magic. Had she not been keeping ot as child friendly as possible, surely one of the kids could have suffered a serious and lasting injury at least, if not death.

True, true. But, then again, the loss of a loved one can be worse than any amount of broken bones. And also, do you think Voldemorts' death will just be a simple case of falling asleep? Face it, Harry ain't gonna die. J.K isn't stupid. Kill Harry and she'll be on the shit-list of children everywhere.

I think one of the main three, or maybe Dumbledore, will die before the end, even though I can't decide which one, and you're right, it probably won't be Harry.

The only way Harry really has of killing Voldemort is to use the avarda kevada curse, which pretty much does produce a long-sleep death. Not leaving any external marks, an intact corpse etc.

Not that I think she should use gore; it just wouldn't work.

Makes sense to me. You're right, gore wouldn't work. Although, if she is going to kill any of the main 3, it will be Ron. Why? Well, Harry can't die, and I get the feeling that many of the readers want him and Hermoine to get together. So that leaves Ron, who, to be honest, is quite annoying at times.

I don't watch French and Saunders. Mainly because they aren't funny.

I also think she has said she associates Hermione with herslef, so that woukd be a stranhe death.

Hermione and Harry getting it together? Maybe. Certainly not impossible, but it would be a little cliched. Not that that would stop her, another asset of the child orientation.

Ron is the most likely to die, if anyone does.

Do you think she'll remember to include Sirius' funeral in book 6. It wouldn't make much sense if she didn't.

No problem

It means Laughing My Arse Off

It's one up from LOL (Laugh Out Loud), but one down from ROTFLMAO (Rolling on the Floor Laughing My Arse OFF)

Thanks. I can sometimes guess what it means in context to the rest of the sentence, but I'm hopeless with just a phrase on its' own.

(to quote) "it is almost as rare as a (insert whichever school you wish) virgin"
(mumblemumble/alpo bumblemore)

both great, but harry is slightly better. you have to appreciate toilet humour to understand barry, and many of my freinds cant understand why i was able to get past page 15 of the shameless parody, or even on to the unnecessary sequel.
but harry is better, (ever so slightly, if possible) more realistic

Personally, I do have to say I find Barry Trotter astonishingly unfunny. It's about as comically valuable as The Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings, the best joke in which is the name of their "parody" of Bilbo Baggins: "Dildo Bugger".

I must admit it wasn't funny. Although the intro was quite good. The best thing about parody novels is how they poke open the holes in the actual books which you never thought of before, sometimes becoming a novel in its' own right.
