Coldplay

Just to get off the normal topics, I thought I'd start a new thread about one of my favourite bands. Coldplay. So I'd just like to hear everyone's opinion of them (particually non-British opinions) and what peoples favourite songs are and why. Just a thread to talk about Coldplay.

My personal favourite song is 'Clocks' on ROBTTH, followed closely by 'Spies' and 'Don't Panic' from Parachutes.

Very awesome, I really liked In My Place and God Put A Smile On Your Face, I thought Daylight was a bit weird though, don't realy like it, and now that I think about it I havn't listened to that album in ages, I'm not even sure where it is :(

I'm sorry, i could just never like them at all.... :(
Heard WAAAAAY too many band of the same ilk in college- they are IMO a glorified college band- Trouble and Yellow are good but Clocks is played to death on every damn radio station.

Both Parachutes and ROBTTH are some of the few CD's in my collection (and I have MANY) that I manage to play through without skipping. Excellent music, excellent people - giving the rights to your music to UNICEF is admirable to say the least. I love Coldplay (and Gwyneth Paltrow, though that has nothing to do with it  )

PS: 'Trouble' is my favorite

Coldplay is a pretty tame band, but they are tolerable. God Put a Smile on Your Face is a pretty decent song.

"Clocks" was a bloody good song, as was "Yellow" (It kinda grew on me), and the rest of their songs are quite good to. Where have they gone? It seems sad that Chris Martin is only mentioned if Ms. Paltrow does something worthy of the tabloids' attention (like walk 100 meters). Shame, because he's a good performer. Saw a televised performance of him singing "Clocks" a few years ago at T in the park. He was almost having sex with a piano!

One of my favourites is Warning Sign on ROBTTH. Not my favourite band, however, I much prefer bands like Radiohead. Warning Sign, Amsterdam and God put a Smile upon your face are good songs, though

I used to like Coldplay until I realized that all of their songs sound the same and the music is insanely simple. Once I discovered metal and prog rock bands like Opeth and Dream Theater with real musical talent I never went back.

Coldplay are a very boring band. Well, "Yellow" is good, but I don't think anything else of theirs is good. I own Parachutes and I have heard Rush of blood to the Head.

I like the way you think. I'm listening to Blackwater Park right now.

I love listening to Coldplay, I find it really soothing. Oddly enough, I don't own any of their albums, but I've downloaded about half of ROBTTH :p

I kinda like Coldplay but they're not my favourite. I feel like they ripped off Radiohead when they did Clocks, but I guess it's a good formula, so why not?

I think it's a shame that they only get publicity now because of Gwyneth. Unless you're listening to music-saturated media like TripleJ, then you hear about Coldplay actually doing stuff. I think Trouble is probably their best song.

Weren't these cats just on Saturday Night Live? (and on that note, what the hell happened to Lindsey Lohan, she take up heroin or something? Key-riste. Wait, that's not the topic....)

Didn't really catch my attention. I sold a lot of their CDs without never knowing what they sounded like. Now I know.

The music may not be overly complicated, but it is well written. There is more to music than technical ability - and that is why, in my opinion, Dream Theatre is a terrible band. Sure, those guys are all gods with their instruments, but they have hardly any talent in song writing. Technical ability doesn't make good music, and that is shown with them. Except for the song "The Dance of Eternity".

Now *that* is a fantastic song.

Anyways, Coldplay is a pretty decent band for the most part. I'm a fan of the song "Spies" and "Don't Panic".

I'm still more a fan of Radiohead, since their music is on similar roads.

But then again, I'm a fan of one too many bands. Music is made for the masses, and dammit, I'll be damned if I'm not going to enjoy as much of it as possible!

I make the 'too simple' claim sometimes and I got called out on it by no less than Terrance Blanchard telling a story of his time in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He was tellin' how all these young cats in the band would bring new charts to play that where these intricate numbers and Blakey would stop it a few bars in sayin', "Hold up, hold up now. What is this? Anyone can write a piece no one can play. Write good music, thats where it's at."

So every once in a while I catch myself making that criticism and think of what Blakey would say.

Coldplay = *yawn* for me.

Slow, dirgey depressing pop isn't my scene. For me, Coldplay go in the same flush of the toilet as Radiohead...

I like Amsterdam best.

I think the music is quite complex- they certainly have skill with the instruments they play, if nothing else.

Possibly my favourite band. Though a certain amount of patriotism comes into that, I suspect.

One word: Miserycore.
Come on, if Radiohead are depressing, then surely Coldplay should be banned on public (mental) health grounds?

I was listening to Coldplay on 'shrooms yesterday. They were still dull. :/

Coldplay have not done anything innovative with the art of songwriting. How do they have any more talent than Dream Theater in this regard?

PS, I like Radiohead.
