Do you think there will be another SW Trilogy in 18 years?

I really do think so. I will bet that George Lucus has Ideas swirling in his head already for the next trilogy even though he says this one will be the final one. I think he will either write it and do the project himself while he is alive or write it and make sure someone will do it after he dies.

No. He has expressed how much he dislikes Star Wars and the way it has consumed his life and derailed his career. He feels his heart is really in art house movies like THX 1138, and thats the type of small, uncommercial movies hed like to spend the rest of his life making. He has expressed nothing but satisfaction that Star Wars is finally over and he can move on with his life. There is no reason to believe he will go back to the project he blames with derailing his career.

erm... I think that the rest of the star wars thang (ie the trilogy that comes after the bit they made first) has already been written, like, years ago...

as for whether they'll make the films, well, do you have any idea how much they make from merchandising?

No, not really. George Lucas only wrote the scripts for the 6 movies. He has written nothing else. The original star wars trilogy books were ghost written (meaning he payed someone to write them in his name based on his scripts), and the latest adaptations from the prequels were written by well known fantasy authors who were allowed to take the credit. All other Star Wars books have no connection to George Lucas other than that he authorized their publication.

Years ago when the original movies first came out, Lucas did say he viewed SW as a 10 movie deal and that he would make episodes I - III first before making VII - X. But that might have been just random mumblings of course.
What would happen in Episode VII?

Lucas is a shrewd businessman so i think he'll get someone else to make it (hopefully a good director... i'd like to see what Peter Jackson could do with it) and just sit back and rake in the moolah.
not like he needs it but i'm sure he wouldn't say no to a little retirement spending money - after all he still has the merchandising rights, right?

though i do hope he'll get someone else to do the scriptwriting/novel adaptation - from the last 2 movies and what i've heard of ep3 (seeing it tonight btw) he's lost his touch with dialogue and heart

he'd actually be a bit dumb, business-wise, to not do the last 3 considering the popularity of the franchise. if he owns the rights he can sit back, let someone else do all the hard work and get millions for it! wish i could do that ;)

There is no last 3. Thats kinda the whole point. Its like saying Sylvester Stalone would be dumb if he did not do the last 3 Rocky movies. There is no last 3, Rocky is done. There is no last 3, Star Wars is done.

Nice idea, but I guess these scripts also should have Jacen and Jaina Solo in it (Han and Leia's eldest children)

but there are the books right?

and if there aren't a last 3 lucas (or preferably someone else) should make them, partly cos i'd love to see a last 3, and also Lucas would be crazy to miss out on the opportunity seeing how huge star wars is!

Yup LazyHippies is right.

It all comes from George Lucas saying, as a joke, to Rolling Stone, that there was a 3rd Trilogy. Rolling Stone then printed it as fact. Hence a great mix up.

Technically only the first novel was ghost-written: TESB and ROTJ were published under their actual authors' names of Donald F Glut and James Kahn, IIRC.

From wikipedia:
There were originally supposed to be nine films in three trilogies, in which the later three (Episodes VII, VIII, IX) would tell the tale after the fall of the Empire, and the outcome of the Rebel War; however, Lucas has stated that he does not intend to make any more Star Wars films after Episode III, owing partially to the gargantuan Extended Universe of books, games, comics, and TV shows that were developed to continue the Star Wars story.
So it looks likely that there won't be any more. It won't be like Lucas needs the money:
In 2005, Forbes Magazine estimated the overall revenue generated by the entire Star Wars franchise (over the course of its 28-year history) at nearly $20 billion U.S., easily making it the most successful film franchise ever.
$20 billion U.S!

there are the final 3 episodes already out...

they're just in book form. Looks like those who are really interested may have to read something

I hope the series is just allowed to fade into movie history. 6 Star Wars movies are sufficient. Any more would suck. Suck more than "Phantom Menace", which was crap compared to the original 3. Even thinking about a 7th is enough.

But will it die? No. Imagine a cuboid, with the same length, breadth and width as the Empire State Building. Now fill it with $100 bills, as many as possible...

I give it 10 years.
