Yeah, because being afraid of things designed to kill or injure is such a bad thing.

Dude, that's a hatefull stereotype. Stuff like this should have no place in a multicultural society.

It's not a disease and needn't thus be "cured".

Some people are irrationally afraid of guns. They start to feel afraid if they're alone in the same room with a gun. It's as if they feel the gun will jump up and start randomly shooting on it's own.

I know, but I assumed the point to his sarcasm was that it's completely reasonable and acceptable to be afraid of guns.

I deffinantly do not have Hoplophobia. The desert eagle I will be picking up soon should be proof enough of that. What does scare me is those drug dealers a couple of appartments down.

Many people having Hoplophobia is by no means suprising. The media has a very anti-gun bias as excels at scaring the uneducated public. Then again, the media has a piss-poor track record of having one crusade after another against something.

Yeah. Just start buying drugs from them. Then instead of being afraid when you see them you'll just crave crack.

I'm not afraid of guns. I'm afraid of people with guns.
What's that phobia named?
(What's the name of the psychotic obsession of guns? Oh, I forget, there is no such thing as psychotic obsession of guns. )

Even Freud thought that a fear of weapons was a disease.

Even Freud thought that a fear of weapons was a disease.

A bit of an understatement:

"A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity." Sigmund Freud -- General Introduction to Psychoanalysis

No offense intended. But those are his words on the subject.

Without Freud, we would have never had Neon Genesis Evangelion. Let's face it, if Eva had been based on behaviorism rather than psychoanalysis, it would have been complete shit.

There's a difference between being afraid of guns in the context of an armed, loaded, and brandished weapon, as opposed to just a gun sitting there. I'm afraid of the first, not the second - but the second certainly enables the first. I'm not against the right to own firearms, I'm against reckless ownership - mandatory certification in their use before a license to own a firearm would be nice, although banning the weapons seems overboard. Then again, I would support banning rocket launchers and sniper rifles for the general public - there is a limit.
