Allmusic defines "pop" as:

In a broad sense, pop is any music based on memorable melodies, repeated sections (usually, but not always, verses and choruses), and a tight, concise structure that keeps the listener's focus on those elements.

Well, I voted "Jazz", although that would only count if you take the widest definition of Jazz, because most stuff I'm listening to is Acid Jazz (electronic), Dancefloor Jazz (very danceable Jazz, mostly 60ies and 70ies stuff), Funk and such things.

Then some Alternapop / Electropop / French Pop like Chicks on Speed, Hi Ho Silver, Kool Ade Acid Test, Stereo Total and other bands probably nobody here has ever heard of. ;)

Also a little French House, Deep House, 2step, Downtempo, Break Beats, Easy Listening...

I'm so glad that I'm from Europe, where there actually still is some good music to be heard.

Subtle doesn't have to mean deep and meaningful. It could mean textured, nuanced, something that affects your mood without beating you over the head. It is hard to find music that doesn't scream angry, sad, or happy.

True. Even then, sometimes I don't want music that's textured and nuanced. Of course in the majority of situations I do, but music in itself is expression. So all forms of expression are equally valid. I don't like minimalist music, for example... but some people do, so it's equally valid. And I do like discordant music, but a lot of people hate it utterly.

Techno. I prefer to just call it Electronic Music and use genres within it as a way of giving some idea what flavours I prefer and the flavours I abhor.

Proper Detroit Techno (the kind thats been around since Eminem was in kindergarten) Blake Baxter, anything by Underground Resistance. Electro, in nice dark and freaky flavours like Anthony Rother or Mr. Velcro Fastener.

INDUSTRIAL is not an unimportant sub-genre. Anyone who thinks so is lacking in brain cells. Umm, NINE INCH NAILS? Is that a familiar name pehaps? NIN sucks ass, but they are definately Industrial. Goth is a fashion statement and obsession with blood, mascarra and being miserable, not a musical style. Its a pretty neat sub-culture, but the music most "Goths" listen to is from all over the map, not just one style. But I'm just a Jaded Old Raver who makes a living making music and helping bands get the sounds they want, so what the hell do I know?

What, there's no metal on that poll? Blashphemy! I suppose you could lump some of the stuff I listen to into "goth", but there's gothic metal (often like black/death/doom metal but more melodic and with lots of classical instruments and operatic/female vocals), of which I don't listen to, and 99% of all "goth" music is total crap (KoRn and shit). I guess rock is the closest of all of those. Pink Floyd are absolute artists, and Led Zeppelin are always fun. But, I do listen to metal the most (primarily black, death, and folk, though traditional/heavy is still awesome), so it's a shame there's no such option available.

Oh, there's some industrial I listen to on occasion - Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, etc.. It's all great, but I just can't listen to a lot of it at once.

"PIG" and "KMFDM" are pretty good, but you need more thrash metal in there. Try Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom and Hanzel Und Gretyl. Some more good industrial:
The Kovenant
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
OhGr

Also, no musical interest is complete without funk and disco. Let's get funkay!:

Jamiroquai
The Trammps
Barry White
Hot Chocolate
Curtis Mayfield

Ridiculously heavy metal is pretty cool, too:
Septic Flesh
Machine Head
Megadeth
Anthrax

Yeah, then there's the other stuff that shifts category too much or is just easily put into a void of category:
Megaherz
JBO
Laibach (Only some of their songs)
Full Devil Jacket
Metal Church

Yes, and in response to the KMFDM quote:

The ultimate disgrace
Wrapped up as a gift from God

The problem, too, is that a lot of the time, people classify anything at all depressing as "goth" music, so that means that the entire black metal genre gets thrown into that heap (a horrible thing to do), as well as a good portion of other stuff.

Delta blues, Chicago blues, west coast blues, acoustic blues, electric blues, New Orleans blues, Memphis blues, Piedmont blues....blues, blues, blues. Love the blues.

You sir, are my new best friend.

Now one thing I need to mention, if you really look back on musical history (at least in the U.S.) you can find that the true roots of almost every single generation and genre of music from the 1950's on, and even earlier than that, have origins in The Blues. The music of the soul definately deserves some more recognition as the basis of modern musical culture.

Without The Blues, you destroy the revolution that is Rock and Roll with classic bands like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Greatful Dead, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers, The Who, The Beatles, and countless other amazing groups that shaped the way we appreciated music from the early 1960's and on.

Moving on, look at how every other genre after the origins of rock have played off this basis. Bands like AC/DC, Jethro Tull, and The Ramones have started countless revolutions in punk, metal, and everything headbanging.

For the pop rock crowd, take a look at Blink 182, and Fountains of Wayne. I can easily compare Blink as having many tunes with a signature Doors feel of interesting chords and a spaced out nature. And to be frank, Fountains of Wayne takes influences from all over the spectrum, from Hendrix, to The Doors, to Zeppelin, and beyond.

Next, look at the accoustic rock section of Dave Mathews Band, Tenacious D, and many other bands with the accoustic feel. I start by thinking of Bob Dylan, one of the world's greatest lyricists, The Beatles for their simplicity and subtleness, and Neil Young for his interesting songs (for lack of a better description).

I could go on to countless other music types and genres (even hip hop, R&B, and rap: have you heard Puff Daddy's take on Zepp's Kashmir?), but I don't want to drone on longer than necissary or wanted. Still, to go back to the beginning, more respect should be given that way-- to the beginning, the origin, the spark that started it all. Go pick up a blues album and FEEL the music, and I think most people will find it very very enjoyable.

Goodnight

"Goth" should be removed from that list. It does not deserve to exist. And yeah, blues is pretty much the root of all twentieth century music, I'll give you that. However, given the current situation, I still enjoy thrashing my brains out and playing the air guitar more than anything.
