Can people really walk around town with swords? Do you at least need a permit? O.o

No. People havn't walked around waring swords in Japan since the practice was banned in the early Meji era.

Kill Bill is set in an alternate reality where people carry swords everywhere.

I carry an invisable Gun/Scyth around with me everywhere I go.

It's pretty sweet.

It wasn't meant as a social commentary. It was actually asked in skepticism of the movie in which a bunch of people drive around on motorcycles with swords strapped to em, and go dining in an elegant restaurant so armed.

I was just wondering if I was the crazy one, or if Quentin Tarantino was.

It's sometimes hard to know where my crazy ends, and someone else's begins. :)

The laws are very strict about who can carry a real sword. Yes, you do have a permit to do so, you have to be transporting the sword for a legit reason (going to pratice, display, and so on, just because you wanted to take your sword for a walk doesn't count). And the sword (any traditional Japanese weapon really) MUST be wrapped and tied while in transport.

Pretty much it boils down to, you can have one only if you are using it in a class or club that uses it, this must be proven, and if you take it out during transport, it would be easier just to use it to kill yourself then and save the police the trouble of coming after you. ;)

Ok, that last part is a bit in jest, but the police in Japan are VERY strict with this law.

My friend in Japan has a sword. He carries it around on the way to the dojo, but it has to be in a sword bag. It weighs two kilos and is made of aluminium. It is blunt, as you are not supposed to kill people with it, only practice killing people.

You can buy perfect replica weapons in Japan. I could have bought an immitation glock pistol for $15 that shot little pellets. I didn't buy it as my penis is of adequate length, so I didn't feel the need to compensate by putting people's eyes out with pellets.

Well that just sucked the fun out of it.

I never thought I'd give this advice, but, WATCH MORE TV! Haven't you ever seem a wedding in Afganistan? Man, if I was invited, I wouldn't go unless I had a kevlar helmet.

those are called "air soft"
and they serve 2 puproses.
airsoft is the equivalent of paintball for the japanese, they have tournaments and playing fields for it just like paintball does in the US, the only difference is of course that airsoft fires a 6mm rubber/plastic BB and the guns are replicas of just about any real gun ever made (and in my opinion superior to paintball, no hopper or gas tank, just change magazines if you run out of BBs, like the real thing. they are also capable of full auto features just like the real guns they copy). and most operate on a battery powered air piston system.
i own 3 myself.

the second purpose of course is for the collectors. in japan gun ownership is strictly regulated, so much so that only a handful of hunters and police own firearms. as such gun officionados can purchase airsoft to get thier fix on gun collecting

like Phylum Chordata said, switzerland, afghanastan, and many other countries allow the open carry of firearms. brandishing is an improper term. in the US it means you are threatening somebody with your firearms without cause, not just carrying it on your person.

I think that being threatened by large swords should be made compulsory. On Saturdays.

Well when Miss Thurmann is sitting on a frickin plane with her Nihonto sitting next to her I was just laughing...can you imagine that these days? You would be dead before you entered the aiport.

Its called an Iaito. Its meant for practicing Katas (forms) and giving the feel of 'real steel'. Although they are a lot lighter than 'real' Nihonto or steel replicas, they are better than Bokken (wooden swords) for practice IMHO.

I think it's a good idea that those swords are so bound. I have practiced with live Shinken, and they're sharp enough to cut someone in half. Pretty easily. I could probably cut someone's head or arm off, so could most other people.

In China where many people practise Tai Chi, it is common to see groups of people wandering into the park all carrying swords to practise sword form Tai Chi every day.

The question has been answered, but I just had to say that my ex-GF laughed outloud when I pointed out that the Bride had booked a seat for her sword. And the bosozoku gang with sword opn their bikes was even funnier.
