Well, officer assignments came in today for FY06, and I discovered that I'm going to be a Comm & Info officer for the Air Force. I'll get to enjoy some quality time down at Keesler with a good friend who has the same AFSC.
Does anyone know anything about this field? Or about joint/combat comm? Cause right now I'm pretty bummed about not getting Security Forces.
Ha ha ha, just like branching Signal Corps in the Army. Can you be in charge of Combat Controllers? That would get you some trigger time, well, your Controllers would get some, anyway. I doubt that they ever get enough together to actually for a platoon.
Did you not get to choose your branch? I am in OCS through the KSARNG, and we can pick what we want. As long as we qualify for it and can find an open position.

Yeah, I wanted Air Force. I'm in ROTC right now with just under a year to go. I dunno, Comm might not be so bad. I just didn't want a job where I'd be sitting around all the time. If I can get with the combat or joint squadrons, it should be interesting. I only have to like it long enough to get my surgery done, and go UPT.

Look for pilot's wings on your chest -- if you don't see any, you're career potential in the Air force is limited. If you want a career in the Air Force and you are not going to be in a rated position, find the non-rated career path that has the greatest potential for advancement. Look at the O-5 and O-6 promotion records for various non-rated career fields.
If you want a career in the armed services and you're not emotionally tied to the Air Force, check out the possibilities an inter-service transfer as quickly as possible.
If you just want to be safe for 4 years and then get out, you're in a good AFSC.

I really don't care all that much about advancement. I just want a job I can enjoy, and I'm locked in, so telling me to look elsewhere is kind of pointless. I guess if it sucks, I have a few options open to me. 1, continue trying for UPT (since I'll finally be off recheck by then) 2, cross train into Security, or 3, there's always the Blue to Green program.
I was really hoping someone out here in the NS realm could give me insight on the Comm field so I know what to expect.

My comment wasn't pointless when it was made. It was good information based on what you told us.
If you don't want a career in the Air Force, then caring about advancement better be high on your priorities. If you're undecided about making it a career, you'd sure better act and do like you care about advancement -- there are plenty of zoomies around who will be running the race to win, and folks who don't care about advancement won't get instructor/standardization slots or get on anyone's coattails -- you have to be valuable to your boss for him to pull you along with him.
The Air Force's job is missiles, planes, and space. The farther you are from an operational unit, the less career status you have. You may not think this is helpful as it relates to a comm job, but it's good info for your future.

Oh, of course. I didn't mean it like that, I only meant I wasn't playing the game just to make X rank or anything like that. I'll do my best at the job, I've been raised with too much pride in my work to do otherwise. I'm just annoyed that I don't think the Air Force is utilizing me where I can do the best job for them. They placed me based on my major, but unfortunately, I'm not very good at my major and I didn't even pick it. But time will tell. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprized.
