Is this true?

I know that the Senate and Congress have an awesome retirement plan but how true is this email I just received?

Dear All, I know this one's been around the net, albeit featuring different 'retirees,'but each time I read it I become more furious- I wish our lives worked like those of our illustrious elected officials.

Our Senators and Congressmen do not pay into Social Security and therefore, of course, they do not collect from it. Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan for themselves. Many years ago they voted in their benefit plan. In more recent years, no congress person has felt the need to change it. After all, it is a great plan.

For all practical purposes their plan works like this. When they retire, they continue to draw their same pay until they die, except it may be increased from time to time by the cost of living adjustments.

For example, former Senator Bradley and his wife may be expected to draw $7,900,000.00, with Mrs. Bradley drawing $275,000.00 during the last years of her life. This is calculated on an average life span for each. THEIR cost for this excellent plan is "$0.00" -- nada! Nothing!

This little perk they voted in for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab for this plan. This fine retirement plan is funded directly from the General Funds of the US Treasury. Our tax dollars at work!

With Social Security, which you and I pay into every payday for our own retirement, with an equal amount matched by our employer, we can expect to get an average of $1,000.00 per month. In other words, we would have to collect our benefits for 681 years and 1 month to equal the Bradley's' benefits.

Imagine, for a moment, that you could structure a retirement plan so desirable that people would have extra amounts deducted from their pay to enhance their own personal retirement income. A retirement plan that worked so well that Railroad Employees, Postal Workers and others, who were not in the plan, would clamor to be included.

This is how good Social Security could be, if only one small change were
made. That change would be to jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan out from under the Senators and Congressmen. Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us. Then watch how fast they would work to fix the current Social Security Plan!

If True... are you outraged? SHouldn't we be protesting shit like this? I already think that their salary is obnoxiously high. They shouldnt be in it for the money, they shoudl be in it for the public service. Sure I believe they shoudl get a comfortable wage but this is ridiculous..

Interestingly here in Australia, the pollies actually revised down the retirement benefits. Mind, it doesn't effect the current pollies, only the next lot that come through.

I would be A-OK with that as a start here. But None of those jerk-oofs deserve the pay that they get. Not a single one.

Keruvalia beat me to that link. Good example of misinformation generating more heat than light.

ok thanks - so some of it is true and some of it is false or outdated.

What is the average pay of a congressmen or senator? Anyone know where to get that info? I'm sure they still make way more than I woudl be comfortable with. They still also draw pensions that can be up to 80% of their pay. What... can't they get a job after they leave the senate? Aren't they able to save any money from the (what I'm betting is) hundreds of thousands of dollars that they make a year?

How much do Representatives and Senators get paid?

The current salary is $155,100. The only exceptions are the Speaker, who makes over $194,000 and the Majority and Minority Leaders who make approximately $167,000.

The average annual salary in the Washington, D.C. area is $49,420 (2002). The average salary of a CEO in Washington, D.C. is $98,030 (2002).

Don't they always raise their pay?

Every year, Congressmen and Senators get an automatic "cost of living adjustment" - a boost in their salary equal to inflation - unless they vote to deny themselves the raise. Last year, Congress gave itself a cost of living adjustment slightly higher than the one given to Social Security and other federal employees.

damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn - Thanks for the info

I wish I could vote on my own pay raises and decide what that pay raise is actually gong to be. I would probably give myself as much as possible as long as it didn't make the business go under.

That's the real travesty. They don't even vote FOR the raises. Somehow they've structured the whole raise thing so they have to vote against the increase.

I've written to snopes to ask them to debunk the "you dont have to pay income tax" guy (he'll supposedly pay you $10,000 if you prove him wrong - which I thought I did a good job of but he wrote me back and told me I was wrong, which is why I went to snopes) and asked why they havent already done so since he has been making the claim for years - and I got a very nasty letter in return saying that they have better things to do or something. I was like

but according to that earlier post, they do get to decide the amount of that raise? What possible cost of living increase could be needed if you are already makking over a hundred and fifty grand a year? I wanna bitch slap them all.

One of the many perks of power.
