Good luck. I know several Canadians that are well on their way to being Americans, mostly due to the same frustration that you feel.

I was actually reading some big Canadian news today. Looks like Canadians don't want a conservative government at all. (Unless you live in Alberta that is) Harper got a big surprise today. Belinda Stronach crossed the isle. She's with the Liberals now. What a blow to the conservatives. Their star leaves. Canadian politics is actually starting to get interesting, maybe I'll start paying more attention since the American elections are over.

Jay, I've said it before, I'll say it again:

There's every reason to have a change in government, and sure the time may be right for a right-of-centre gov in Canada, but - Steve Harper doesn't have the vision, or the understanding of Canadian national politics to properly serve the needs of the traditional Tory voter.

Traditional Tory voters in Canada aren't social conservatives - they're fiscal conservatives with a strong tendency towards social progressiveness. Harper has completely failed to capture the hearts and minds of these Tory voters, who, disenfranchised, have as a matter of course, turned to the one political party that comes closest to matching their particular political point of view - and that's the Liberal party.

Like my dear old auntie in Quebec, who, though a lifetime Tory, has been voting for the Libs since the mid-90s. Why? In her words, the Liberals are "her kind of conservatives".

Try again, with a leader who doesn't go slumming around separatist bed-chambers and who has a clear understanding of his traditional constituency.

By "productive" do you mean "efficiently punishing gays for being gay"? Because a lot of Harper's current unpoplularity in Canada is due to his Republican-style social conservatism.

Nah, I mean Canadians that can do useful work and don't want to have a large portion of their income seized by the government. Social preferences don't mean much to me. The mechanics of being gay are a little disturbing to contemplate, but I don't have to watch.
