An interesting revelation that coincided with the Norwegian national holiday (today) is that Sweden came very close to declaring war against Norway when the Union split 100 years ago. I wonder what things would be like if war had actually happened...?

But don't you think we might appear a bit nationalistic, posting a thread about our national day in an international forum (though I've seen alot of 4th July threads on various boards, ever since I started using them)?

Oh, things would have probably been pretty similar really. I think the Norwegians would have taken pity on Sweden after your capitulation... letting you keep your dialect and things of that nature. They seem very humane that way. ;)

The Norwegian military and politicians admitted that the odds were against Norway winning a war. At the same time, Sweden was not especially keen to go to war either. A war with Norway would have entailed huge human and economic losses. People truly feared war, and they knew that the military apparatus in both countries was preparing for war and would act if the politicians gave the order.
So we probably would have won, but there would wouldn't be much left on either side. In the end we'd probably have both been conquered by the Danish or something.

Oh, I just thought I'd humour the Norwegians today - it being the sjuttonde maj and all. Tomorrow you can point to the facts and make the (laughable!!!) claim that you would have won.
(ghehe I'l leave the smiley out of this one... let's see what happens)
