Smelly sand

Could anyone think of an explanation for the existance of smelly sand? You know that sand that just smells a bit iffy and its not usually the colour either. Thankfully its pretty rare. And I don't mean sand on a polluted beach by the way. Or maybe if you were sitting next to a fat woman who'd just gone for a long run in an overcoat. No, not that smell.
