Girlie-issue... perfume

Hi, I've got a bit of a girlie-problem here...

I'm looking for a new perfume. So far, I've been using Anais Anais, but I find it a bit to flowery at the moment.

First thing I tried was going to Boots trying out a few scents they have there, but that was no good. II couldn't get the shop assistant to understand what I'm looking for, so I had to sniff my way through around 40 scents... After the 10th, my nose started to block up, after the 17th I was feeling dizzy and couldn't smell anything any more anyway.
So, I thought I gather some recommendations first and try only those, and see if I like one of them.

What I'm looking for is something on the line of sandalwood/ylang ylang/inscence/patchouli, maybe a bit jasemin and rose as well, no vanilla and not too much musk, absolutely no melon or cucumber smells.

Any ideas/suggestions?

well i have no idea what you're looking for from that description but i've always liked Hugo Boss-Deep Red and Armani Night (i think that's what it's called, it's the red bottle)

What does it smell like?
that's a really hard question!

according to one website Hugo Boss Deep Red is a 'sophisticated feminine scent which fuses energy and sensuality, strength and femininity. It has fruity top notes of cassis and pear, mixed with the energy of clementine and blood orange, middle notes of the exotic butterfly lilly and base notes of precious woods, vanilla and musk.' so i guess that's actually not what you're looking for

Armani Night is 'A captivating scent bound by myrrh. An infinitely precious and spellbinding essence. Strength and softness. Brilliance and darkness. Incandescent freshness. A floral-woody-amber with fascinating contrasts, the absolute essence of femininity.' and 'has Fruity Top Notes (Bergamot, cranberry, amber, hawthorn petal). Floral Heart/Middle Notes (Lily of the Valley, Magnolia, Freesia, Purple Peony, Iris, Violet, Heliotrope). Musky Base Notes (Teak, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Myrrh, White Musk).'

Ok, Armani Night just made the list... I don't like fruity smells too much, but then amber and hawthorn petal aren't fruits. The rest sounds just perfect...

how about Yves Saint Laurent Paris 'This fragrance has notes of rose petals, orange blossom, mimosa, cassia, hyacinth, orris, jasmine, ylang-ylang, lily of the valley, amber, musk, moss, iris, and heliotrope.'

I think I tried that... I found it a touch to heavy.

I really found an expert, eh? How do you know so much about perfumes?

I don't really, I just spend a lot of time smelling perfumes (perfume shopping is great, no perfume will make you feel fat or ugly lol) so i know which ones I like

:) I just couldn't do that... my senses just shut down after a while. I really enjoy smelling the first few... and then it gets torture

Gucci "Rush" I love it..wear it every day ! ( It can be strong though, the best way to wear it is to spray your towel with it when you get out of the shower and then dry off. )
Here's what a web-site said about it

Gucci rush for women was created by gucci in 1999. gucci rush perfume by gucci is a flowery fragrance blending floral gardenia, coriander seeds, jasmine, rose, and vanilla.

*lol ... Have you ever read a description for a good Whiskey? You won't believe what you are supposed to be smelling/tasting. They even tell you exactly what part of the tongue you taste it on.

I don't like these sensuality - femininity descriptions either, they don't tell me anything about what that stuff actually smells like. After all, that's all I want to know

exactly. i mean if only they just said "fruity" or "musky", or actually described the scent in a non-pretentious manner... what the fuck does "fruity top notes of cassis and pear, mixed with the energy of clementine and blood orange, middle notes of the exotic butterfly lilly and base notes of precious woods, vanilla and musk" actually mean?

i forget who said it (some comedian), but describing bloke's deodorants is a lot easier: "Lynx - it stops you smelling like shit!" :D

bah, i'm better at describing taste in foods than smells anyway.

if you can smell it, it's too strong.

Perfume should be subtle.

People shouldn't stink of sweat, but they shouldn't stink of fake flowers either.

But then again, that's just my opinion.

If I had to pick something that could best fit the description of the scent of "strength, sensuality, and femininity", it would have to be the natural scent of a woman after a good exercise workout. It can't be bought. Nothing beats it! :)

But then, how would you describe it? The problem here is, most languages don't have enough words for smells or tastes...
How would you describe (in detail) the smell of ... hmm, let's say a hairdresser's shop, a pub, an Italian port?

good point - precisely why tastes are easier than smells!

but also smells seem to be more subjective than taste - what one person smells isn't definatley what another will, unlike taste (which is mostly similar, if not the same)

and i'll write the Hugo Boss description on the back of me hand... *cheats* :D

I agree that perfume should smell subtle. Although my opinion may have something to do with the fact that strong perfumes give my nose troubles - and most of us guys don't like it too strong...

If you're looking for something specific, perhaps you could blend your own perfume from essential oils. Health food shops usually carry lots of oils and blends which may suit your needs, and carrier oils/alcohols and solubaliser. I'm a huge fan of anything containing bergamot and ylang ylang, and I find most commercial fragrances are too complex and artificial.

It's a helluva lot cheaper than commercial perfume, and the therapeutic qualities of scents like sandalwood and lavender can be immensely relaxing and uplifting.

I don't know... you have to know exactly what smells you want, you have to know the exact quantities to use and you might still end up with something completely different than what you intended, as the smells interact.
I guess I don't have the patience to try that... you do need some time to perfect this art ;)

That's what you think, but smell actually communicates a lot.

In fact, some experts believe that smell is the single strongest factor in sexual attraction.

That's true... although most likely not for Boss Red.
There have been a number of experoments with smell and sexual reaction, and although smell is one very important factor in attraction, it is not THE most important. I don't know if you've ever seen adds for those special perfumes that tell you they are "guaranteed to attract women"?
They just don't work. If you are ugly and stupid, no smell in the world will help :)

Burberry has a woodsy smell, kind of like an undertone of cedar. Another spicey, though kind of heavy, scent is Samsara. I don't like the fruity, flowery, musky scents either and I wear Burberry, Samsara, Paloma Picasso, Youth Dew, Aro, Opium, and good old Aromatique Elixir. The Aromatique has gained favorable comments from men on several occasions. For a personal blend, I have bergamot and lemon with a touch of almond...nice and cool smelling.
