This should clear things up for anyone who doesn't know what a chav is.

Emerging British subculture which is quickly becoming an epidemic. Chavs can be found the length and breadth of the country, hanging around any junk food outlet, off licence or just hanging around the streets, where they pass the time by vandalising property, drinking cheap cider, shouting abuse at passers by and terrorising old people.

Appearance: Chavs have a strict dress code. Designer labels are everything, although knocked off/fake items are almost de-rigeur. Typically, the male chav will wear a Nickelson or Schott hooded top, baggy tracksuit trousers, white designer trainers, and a baseball cap by burberry or Nike. The female chav (chavette) will have peroxide blonde hair scrunched so tight into a pony tail with colourful scrunchies that her forehead stretches. She will wear a dark blue tracksuit with white stripes, an enormous puffa jacket, hoop earrings, and white trainers. Female chavs are forbidden from wearing socks, and all chavs must wear as much fake gold jewellery as they can fit on their bodies. Mobiles are an added status symbol, and when equipped, the chav must shout into it in the most anti-social way possible, using at least one expletive and the word "innit" per second. Every other word in between should be unrecognisable to non-chavs.

Cars: Typically the Vauxhall Nova, but could include Ford Escort/Orion, Vauxhall Astra, and for chavs with "bling", even a totally shagged 3 series BMW. Whatever the type of car, it must have a spoiler shaped plank of MDF nailed to the back, 20" alloy wheels which rub on the wheel arches over every bump, a badly fitted bodykit (extra points for being able to see EXACTLY where the car ends and bodykit starts), a lairy paint job with runs in it, exhaust pipes the size of the space shuttle's booster nozzles, and blue LED's on the washer jets. Neon undercar lighting is also desirable.

Attitude: The chav's attitude depends heavily on the number of mates backing him up. If he's on his own, he'll skulk along anonymously. In numbers, he'll challenge anyone to anything.

They actually aren't all that bad, in my experience. Of course, the only chavs I ever meet are mildly irritating 13 year olds who yell "Awright, mate!" at you.

LOL, even though I'm not British, I still know what you're talking about. We have them here in America and I believe they're called something like "Wiggers" or some such. I don't like them much either, but I'm just a live and let live type of person so I just try to ignore them, and thankfully, they usually ignore me as well.

How are chavs new? In Ireland they're known as knackers/scumbags and they wear Adidas, etc. tracksuits and they like loitering and robbing bikes. They've always existed.

Right now, unfortunately, many of the young intellectual community has to deal with the old academic community. It's patently hard to advance when the part of the education system that actually defines culture has been filled with people who keep their tenure by arguing about whether or not Dickinson was a bisexual who liked bondage. Actually the Chavs dont sound that dangerous, compared to say the skin heads of the seventys and eighties, who would have easily eaten them for breakfast.
The thing with these Chavs it seems, is that although their well lets face it, they sound pretty dumb, is that they are smart enough to know thanks to weak do gooders and the modern day mantra which encourages councilling and therapy as discipline, they can virtually nearly get away with everything until their an adult.

kids learn attitudes and personality primarily from their parents - sure measures could have been taken but its unlikely they would have been, or have been, very effective. you'd have to change the attitude of the Gen X parents and thats not exactly an easy thing to do.

There is nothing "emerging" about them at all, they've been around as long as I can remember. Except in Manchester we call them scallies or scalls. Chav just seems to me to be a media word which appeared there fairly recently. No idea how long it has actually been used though.

I have often wondered if that "forceful tug on the crotch" was more a subconscious response to an itch or rash brought on by poor hygiene or some nice sexually transmitted disease.
I always wondered if these people had some common sense at one point, but purged it in an effort to appear cool and uncaring.

We have similar creatures here in the US. I wasnt aware of any US government program that didnt tolerate them. Some of their behavior may not be tolerated- IE: drugs, speeding, shoplifting, etc, but that isnt tolerated if I do it either. Their is nothing targeting them specifically.
You cant have laws that crack down on assholes themselves, only their illegal actions.

Technically you can carry anything apart from a gun, as long as you can prove you had a legitimate reason for carrying with you when attacked. So just make sure you have woodwork class all the time and you'll be fine.
But you can carry rape alarms, pepper spray etc, as long as you only use it properly, which is kinda hard if you getting attacked.

Cause the US government likes its guns and will tolerate an outrageous number of deaths to keep those guns. after all, the second ammendment in the constituition is the right to bear arms. too bad really.

Its a shame they waste so much time, money and effort on these cars. If they put the same effort into education or job training, they could get a good job and feel good about themselves.

They're like those birds that are impressed with sparkly,shiny things. Easily impressed by something that glitters. I hate plated jewelry and cel phones and all the flashy trash. But-to each his own. I can just hope my kids arent drawn to it when they get older. I'd like to think they have values and confidence from me and wont feel a need to belong to that pack.
