That's right. While citizens don't need ridiculous firepower, citizens still need guns for protection. GUNS don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.

What the hell does that have to do with Michael Moore?
On the gun note, I see owning a gun as a property right.

Actually, people should be able to buy anything they want, so long as it is regulated.
I propose this (as I have many times in the past):
1) All states shall issue a state firearms license, the same way they would an automobile license.
2) This license will be for revolvers and pistols, and would allow the holder to concealed carry in ALL 50 states. It would be renewed as a driver's license.
3) To attain this license, the holder must have his fingerprints on file in his own state, go through a background check, and not be a felon or certified insane/incompetant. He would also have to pass a written exam and safely handle both a revolver and a pistol at a state range. The price of this license will be equal to the driver's license.
4) The license will have graduations, so one could add on fully automatic, heavy, or other endorsements, just like one can add CDL, tractor trailer, or motorcycles to on'es driver's license.
5) Local laws would remain in effect for residents of that state. If New Hampshire says you don't need a license, fine. But you can't cross the state line with a firearm.

It's not necessarily an either or; people with guns kill people. Or people with knives kill people. Some with their bare hands. But most would have an easier time escaping a person with a knife, than dodging a bullet. Especially if the person has intent to murder several people; that would take alot longer with a knife, and most likely all but the first victim would be able to escape (or they would be able to disarm the killer; which would also be more difficult if it was a ranged weapon).
